Nice to see the guys enjoying the groove and each other. The crowd dances:Blakey's Jazz for the People! Golson:"Write another one?? Man, I've written everything but a march!" Blakey:"Then write a march, Bro".

Whoah. Eubanks quotes Clifford Brown's original Joy Spring solo at 1:30. Hip stuff.

the part of the solo he is quoting from is around 2:30 of the Joy Spring that appears on "Clifford Brown and Max Roach."

This is a truly grate performance. Love seeing the Japanese people really appreciating the music. This has become one of my favorites lately. Have the vinyl albumn, the music is so beautiful and clear and sounds like you are right there in the audience. Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers took their Art to a very High Level and we should really support this type of Art that in which we see our fellow man taking his fellow Human Beings to a higher level.

Why a trombone? Is this a joke to them?

No joke. The Messengers have had a bunch of trombone players: Curtis Fuller, Julian Priester, Steve Turre, Robin Eubanks, Steve Davis. I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple of guys, too. Watching some of the other late 80s Messengers videos here on the 'Tube, Robin's kicking ass--his solos are more adventurous than some of the other guys'.
