One of my art history professors said something really interesting about Picasso the other day. We were looking at the painting of his sister's first communion that he did when he was fourteen. It was so naturalistic and technically impressive, especially for a child. My professor said, "When he could already do this so early in life, where else did he have to go?" I feel like this is the type of thing you say regarding an artist's pursuit. Not necessarily regarding skill, but regarding goals or phases. Every artist always has somewhere to go, no matter what they have done or what they can do technically or what others think of it.
@KEP1983
3 жыл бұрын
Picasso wasn't that technically skilled at that age for his time period. Remember that artists since the Renaissance had been training since they were 7 years old. It wasn't like today where you don't go to university to get your 'real' training until you're 18. Picasso was a big boy in a small pond in Spain, but when he got to Paris and met the Academic and Impressionists who were technically miles ahead of him, he had to really change his style and become known for something other than technique. Compare 14-year-old Picasso to 12-year-old Sargent or Alma Tadema and you'll see others, particularly the French trained artists, were miles ahead of him with regards to technical skill. Luckily for him, the Impressionists already opened up the idea that art didn't have to be technically naturalistic or classical to be acceptable.

this is genuinely the "weirdest" art studio i have seen until now but i'm loving it! you don't need a huge fancy studio to make beautiful art. this bathroom/studio has charm, and feels cozy to work in. however, i can feel my knees and back hurt just from watching you sit in front of your desk :D

Hullo Robin! I am truly fascinated by your videos and the art concepts you explore within them! You address questions artists years your senior have yet to contemplate or consider, your appeal is so deep! I saw a comment from a 13 year old and I am almost 60! I believe that you are truly inspirational and an Artist in every sense of the meaning. I hope you continue to create and share your journey with us and know how much your art and life is affecting every one of your viewers! Please take care and be safe, have a lovely day. Thank you.

If the bathtub-desk were mine, I would put the table up to the faucet, slide down the other side of the desk, and sit under it, inside the tub ^-^. That said, I'm severely Arthritic and seeing you sit at your desk the way you do had me cringing in empathy.

I think that people need to understand that art does not necessarily mean good. People get defensive of the word because they presume it in some way relates to quality, for example some people will say about a painting that it is "not art" if they don't like it...for me thats just lazy criticism. Art can be anything, it can be amazing, detailed, abstract, realistic, well made or really poorly done and therefore if something is art or not is one of the most pointless descriptors. Bad art is still art.

What a bright cheerful studio! So inspirational. I’m worried about you hurting your back and shoulders because of the way you hunch over your drawing tub/table. Perhaps you could put a wooden box on top of the tub and a piece of Masonite or mélanine that is larger on top so it hangs high over the edge of the tub and is at waist height so your knees can go underneath. I’m sorry can’t describe it really but perhaps there is a better way to make something on the table/tub to help you sit better? Love your awesome art and terrific personality!

I love this, and you!! I found your channel probably about 5 or 6 months ago, and instantly loved it. I thought it was so crazy that how I have planned out my future, even before finding your channel, is pretty much what you've already done! I am a high school senior living in Utah and want to go to BYU to graduate with a bachelor's in fine arts. I then want to move to a cute studio apartment and live there with a cat and lots of plants and just paint and create for my job. That's the dream anyway haha, but that's also what you've done and are doing!! Anyway, I just thought that was super crazy how similar my plan is compared to what you've done without even realizing it till now. Must be why I love your videos so much, you're a great inspiration! But yeah, thanks for reading this if you did, and hope you have a good day 😊🌿

hey robin!! ive been watching for around a year and youve inspired me to start oils! i have one question with your set up, as its pretty similar to mine. When using oils, how do you deal with ventilation?
@RobinSealark
4 жыл бұрын
I use odorless mineral spirit in a coil tank to clean my brushes so the lid is usually closed and the liquin I use as medium doesn’t have too strong a smell, other than that I don’t often notice odors with my oils. I have a swamp cooler above my head with a fan and two windows in my bedroom if I were to need to ventilate but that’s all

I'd really like to see you put more thought/emotion into the content of your work. I think your work is technically strong but conceptually weak. When I look at your work I feel like it's a painting I've seen before many times. What makes your work unique to you? Why is it important that this work be made? What is the point of it beyond just making a pretty painting? What do you add to the cannon of art history? I think if you focus less on perfect technique and more on experimentation your work will blossom. A dedication to realism is holding you back. I think loosening up, adding color that is not local but expressive, using more gestural qualities and most importantly using imagery that is unique to you will move your work forward immensely. I know that you are a fan of reference photos but I encourage you to step away from them and rely more on your imagination and memory. If you use reference photos, play with them and don't just use them as is. I think collage may assist you in making more compelling images and impressions on the viewer.
