These are different compressor types. The VLA is an optical and the kt-76 a fet compressor. No matter what settings we adjust, they will always sound different and be more appropriate for different use cases.

Definitely sound very different from one another. I honestly like both - a lot. Obviously the VLA is much more versatile but it's really a case by case basis. Both sound great on everything tbh just depends what context, genre and what you're going for for the specific mix. The character of the 76 is def that classic sound but the VLA can almost do no wrong it's so musical.

1176 sounds great but VLA sounds very nice and clean. 1176 is "aggressive" and VLA sounds fancy. No doubt both !!!

Nice video Marty. I Also have both comps and love them each on different tracks. Same opinion that you describe here. I could here that the Klar was not exactly the same stereo-image. WIth both comps I always use a Testone+VU-meter to check the correct stereosignal IN and OUT of the units. It's always a hassle with outbopard units, but hey, it's worth while to me..

With these settings, it's clear that the ART is much more transparent, while the KT has more 'suck' and lots more character, which I quite liked. Nice, thanks.

They're totally different flavors! On a slow acoustic piece like this the opto is going to do really well. That doesn't mean that you couldn't use a little of both on the vocals and drums. (very common practice) maybe some parallel compression on the kick and snare. Even though it isn't rock or dance music, it can really help the transients pop and lend energy. These compressors aren't even close to the same architecture. They often work really well in tandem. Using a little bit on the vocals just to take the transients helps the vocal sit will in a mix. The opto is the one you'll really hear at it's shaping the waveform and changing its character.

I've got ART VLA, Warm Audio WA-2A, Warm Audio 76, KLARK TEKNIK 76. Comparing them on acoustic guitar or bass guitar: ART is clear and smooth, but seems muffled with a bit too much hi-end. WA76 gives a bit of saturated sound, KLARK 76 is similar, but more open sound. The winner is: WA-2A.

I think both units are great, considering their price. The ART Pro is a more cleaner and smoother sounding compressor while the Klark Teknik has the typical hard grabbing, more pushed sound that you expect buy a 1176 style comp. I think the ART Pro works great on drums, guitars and subgroups - perhaps also nice on the mixbus. The Klark Teknik is great for bass, vocals but also guitars.

Hey man. Thanks for so many videos of the KT series. I’m wondering whether I should pick KT-76 or the ART so it’s applicable to all vocals (all genres including slow ballad & fast rap). Any suggestion and reason?
@ZedMartyProduction

If you want to use the comp only for vocals, I'd go with the KT-76. As an overall unit for all sound sources including instruments the ART might be the better choice as it is quite a bit smoother.

I see you have this and the DBX 266, which would you say are better suited for vocals? I’m thinking of picking up the klark 76 but came across your DBX videos and I liked the over easy option. Thanks in advanced 😊

Thank you for your reply. Do you run the drum through the deck nakamici a few times or do you have to record on it and then align it in the daw ???
@ZedMartyProduction

I use it mainly as an effect tool, like saturated drum group or snare and kick. It‘s pretty accurate so alignment afterwards is no big deal.

The KT 1176s sound flat, uninspired, and just cheap, cheap, cheap… the only thing they sound useful for is that they really push elements forward. The VLA sounds great... way more natural with a little bit of a rounded “3D” type of sound, and simply more musical overall.
@BobbyStoica

Also Art stock is muffled when compressing and has a certain smallness which screams cheap. KT has iron sound, has crunch, but still in a cheap kind of way, with some weirdness on top and shaving subs. Both kinda useful, anyway, if on a budget.
