One of the best talks I have ever heard. I'll revisit this talk multiple times, and study the shit out of it.

Amazing video! Bouguereau was truly incredible, a real master, and his work is really a point of reference for many artists. Great words by both of you guys. God bless you

This is a way better Museum tour with Mathew Grabelsky, you both seem to have an intellectual understanding of painting which is very interesting to listen too.

About the discussion at 13:00, where you're discussing what makes a Bouguereau different from a photo, and a photo of the same set-up wouldn't have the same impact: I go to a figure drawing session with a Russian who studied at a Russian academy. Incredible painter and draftsman. He's always talking about how you have to make the drawing more elegant than nature, meaning that your drawing shouldn't be full of little bumpy shapes. Morgan Weistling talks about drawing shapes that look like a road map (a bunch of luttle bumps and small subshapes) compared to one's with more elegant simple shapes. I.e. don't copy the bumpy shapes you see, simplify them to make them more elegant. I think that's partly what makes a Bouguereau or Raphael different from nature or photos. Of course there is also just the concept of idealized form in general... not just copying shapes, but being influenced by a conceptual ideal.

21:04 That particular painting was created as a two finger salute to the critics who trashed Bouguereaus works & name in favour of the new modern and impressionists coming onto the market to make it easier to flash out one painting after another so that they would sell and the money would roll in! With a painting like this the commissionaire would have an open ended completion date. So one painting or thousands of paintings the money men did not want quality!!! Lovvve Bouguereau❣️in history you will find the wealthy men are cheap and value only money!

Great video. I've always thought that the best art needs to have much more than the artists original idea, it needs to have space for every viewer to create their own meaning.

I had the privilege to see his retrospective in 1984 at The Montreal Museum Of Fine Art. It suprised, angered, and silenced everyone who saw it. Suprised because we never heard of him at art school. Angered for the same reason. Silenced by the scale and quality of it all. Room after room of huge spectular work. It's one thing to dismiss a small photograph in a magazine or textbook but do it standing in front of something 15' wide with a dozen figures..... Good luck convincing people with cynical bullshit.

If you like Bouguereau as you say. No problem. I prefer others painters, that I like very much, Orientalist Painters: like Edwin Lord Weeks, Gerome, or Frederick Lewis, amazing how they produce the exotism, in Nort Africa, Morroco, Algerie, Egipt and India. If you get a little time, pass an eye o Orientalist painters, are very interesting to watch. Is not distraction, truly .

The Cultural conditionalism in XIX century, concern in Bouguereau paintings subjects as religion, education, social classes. The total works of Bouguereau considering side by side as a meaning. His techniques of painting, mastering the treatment of colors, analyse that. Fits in the time where he lived, what he think , what he feels, his worries, state of mind.

I really admire Bouguereau but he still doesn't do it for me as much as Sargent or Sorolla or Zorn or a few others because it's just SOOO modelled. There's almost a milky quality to it. And is it just me or is it a bit weird that everything seems to be in focus simultaneously, such that there's no focus. Maybe it's just me. Great discussion, though.

Bouguereau is too pretty. Ahhgh he's all technique and no soul! Sure they are visually pleasing, but life is nothing like that. If you think it is you're either sheltered or too young. I used to adore his work to the point of obsession, but I grew out of it, thanks be to the Gods! You dudes should know better! . There's nothing rebellious about loving and emulating the Bougyman!

What’s wrong with beauty? It’s people like you who I can’t stand. You don’t like something and you think everyone should agree with you and if we don’t there is something wrong with us. What I find interesting is the so called art experts who for years tried to wipe Bouguereau from history and it didn’t succeed and they are pissed. When you go to that extreme there is something weird and offensive and people don’t like it.
