I was going to say “I don’t really need this, I want all my lines to be a harsh black like in Studio Trigger’s stuff!” But then I remembered that practically every one of their anime after Kill la Kill uses softer, colored lines, most notably in Promare. Great tip, and it will ensure that if I still use harsh black lines, it will because I want my drawings to look harsh and angular, not because I simply lack experience in using masks to draw colored lines. SpongeBob Squarepants, particularly the relatively-chill first season, is a great example to me of how carefully colored lines can really add to the feeling of soft cuteness.

@Carl The Meatgrinder make sure your clipping layer is directly above the lineart layer, and look for some visual cue that the layer is set as a clipping layer. also, i could imagine it doesn't work very well if your whole piece is on one layer. i don't use alpha lock so i don't know what it's for or what it does. try testing things out on some doodles and see what works, and if you really want, you might be able to search up the program on google and find out exactly how to do it on your specific drawing program.

Alternate idea: Fill the entire clipping layer with a dark color (almost black but not quite). I usually use a dark reddish brown in my style, but you can also go for another dark color that’s closer to the color scheme of what you’re trying to draw. Really ties together the whole artwork in my opinion and gives the line work that softer quality without totally disappearing

If you're using IBIS for this, you should make another layer above your lineart and turn that layer's texture into lighten or soft light (both effects are used different but they get the job done, I recommend lighten more tho) then, fill them in! Oooorrr.... You can go to ur lineart then down to the selection box (where ur tools are located) tap on FX tool and look for "change drawing color". It'll completely turn ur lineart into the color you selected thru color wheel or palette. Though, I recommend the other tip instead cuz you can do it manually whilst this doesn't leave anything unhinged. (I like detail so I try to connect the lineart with different corresponding palettes instead of one to distinguish them clearly and add in a finished look) Both work really well.

for MS PAINT: use the eraser tool, with the secondary color (eraser color) as the new chosen color. for the primary color, put the color you want to change. when you erase while holding the right (not left) mouse button, only the primary color will be "erased". if your lineart is black, and you want it brown, set brown as the eraser color and black as the primary color, then erase over the lineart with the right mouse button. thats one way to use this useful feature.

Personally with my art style, I used colored line art only (and the colors I use in my line art are a bonus for shading and blushing) but I feel like this could help other artists who want softer line art with touches of black. I would also recommend maybe using a dark cohesive color as the line art instead? (Like if you have a pink character, use dark pink line art, purple is dark purple and so on and so forth)
