Arta is a city in northwestern Greece, located in the province of Epirus. The city was built on the ruins of the ancient town of Ambracia and sits on the left bank of the Arachthos River. The city is well known for its Byzantine churches, castle clock, important neoclassical buildings, and its legendary Bridge, its symbol. Arta is a city full of life, with charming pedestrian zones, modern shopping centres, cafès, and bars.
The most famous landmark in the area is the historical Bridge of Arta, considered one of the most notable bridges in Epirus. It was constructed between 1602-06 and became famous due to the legend that surrounds its foundation. According to the legend, the master builder sacrificed his beautiful wife to complete the Bridge's construction. The length of the Bridge is 145 meters, and the width is 3.75 meters. It has been rebuilt many times, beginning with Roman or older foundations; the current Bridge is probably a seventeenth-century Ottoman construction.
The neoclassical building next to the Bridge, built in 1864, has been restored by the Musical-PhilologicBridge's situation of "Skoufas" and today houBridgee Folklore Museum of Arta. The museum is open for a couple of euros.
Located on the left bank of the Arachthos River, just a few meters away from the famous Arta Bridge, stands the majestic and timeless Arta Plane Tree, also known as Ali PashBridgeane Tree. This tree is one of Greece's oldest and most beautiful trees, and it was declared a protected natural monument in 1976.
Besides the famous Bridge, another important attraction in Arta is the Byzantine Church of "Panagia Paregoritissa" (dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the "Consoler"). This majestic temple was built in 1283 to 1296 A.D. by the ruler of Epirus Nikephoros I Komnenos Doukas, in memoriam of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary.
The 13th-century Byzantine castle, Casastleh, rises in Bridgew above sections of the ancient city wall. It is an important attraction and still plays an active role in people's lives. Dozens of happenings and events occur in the open-air municipal theatre near its entrance, where the clock tower stands. The Castle of Arta was constructed during the establishment of the Despotate of Epirus in Arta after the Fourth Crusade, following the fall of Constantinople in 1204 by the Komnenian dynasty. The internal of the CastleCastleartially modified into a Xenia Hotel that was eventually left to decay. Today, it is an essential cultural venue in the prefecture of Arta, hosting many events during the summer.
The Wall Of Ancient Amvrakia is one of the most impressive sights in Arta. It was built to protect the ancient town from enemies, but it has yet to be discovered precisely when its construction began. The remaining parts indicate that the wall was constructed with impressive, uncut stones, giving it a grand appearance.
Modern Arta features well-developed infrastructure, with its heart beating on Skoufa Square, a popular meeting point. The Skoufa Folklore Museum is available for those wishing to learn about the city.
Arta is a lovely place full of history that only a few people have heard of. It isn't on the tourist route, but you should spend at least a day here to experience authentic Greece.
