River Phoenix was obsessed with Arthur Rimbaud's life and he carried a book of his writings with him pulling out quotes at times, he was to play the lead of this Poet's life in a movie that he didn't get to do because of his (River's) early death. Leo ended up taking few of the roles that were meant for River, including "Titanic"

Leo nailed it, & was perfect for this role, absolutely perfect, as he came through it with this skill & aplomb that showed him, much like the Legend whom he was depicting, to be wise beyond his years ((a star was truly born in this movie👍👍))👊👊👍👍 Though I do believe that River Phoenix would have delivered commendably as well ((as it was he who initially took a strong interest in this role, who actually insisted upon this movie being made, generating that early buzz & fervor for it that eventually caught on, all before his tragic departure from this Earth😢😢😢)). For I believe that River Phoenix would have represented Rimbaud equally as well, in his own superb, complex & inimitable way, with just as much depth, range & passion as Leo displayed ((along with that passion of joyful derangement that Rimbaud was both ridiculed & admired for, both grossly misunderstood & renowned, as River could have captured that in a manner just as captivating, me thinks)). One can always speculate....... Yet with that said, Leo brought that mythologized, late 18th Century French Poet to life as virtually no one else could, & succeeded in that challenging task marvelously, with this depth of passion, with this characteristic absurdity & carefree silliness for which Rimbaud was known, & with this precocity of talent that, in most respects, matched that of the man whom he played to perfection ((or near enough to perfection!))👊👊👍👍 A Star was born indeed!

Not a film for anyone who has any interest in Rimbaud, but maybe an interest in Di Caprio. You'd almost think they cast him to piss off the french. To that end, congratulations. This looks worse than far and away, at least in that film Tom Cruise wasn't playing a actual historical figure. Id love to read what the Rimbaud estate thought of this, as in, was their response more than laughter?

Jack Faulkner I'm french, Rimbaud is my favourite poet and I know all of his work and every detail of his life and character and I think Dicaprio portayed him well. Should have been a french film with french actors but Dicaprio did I think a pretty good job with what the real Rimbaud was like. Just my opinion, I hope my english isn't too bad
@xWINfinity
7 жыл бұрын
You make the classical anglo error of thinking that the French are somehow more romantic and more cultured than the English speaking. They're not, it's just illusion in your head. If you watched this film expecting the same quality as Rimbaud's poetry, well... What did you think was going to happen? This movie is more about Rimbaud's life than his work
