I had the same problem with the circuit board that is in the base right out of the box. At first the problem that I had was the blue LED on the hot end wouldn't work. By putting some pressure on the cable and the connector it would work. But after pressing on it a few times my entire hot end went dead. No LEDs, no fans, no heat and the thermistor gave me a -15 reading. After trying to deal with Artillery's support I found a website that sold the set of 3 boards for $20 (fulament.com/collections/sidewinder-x1-replacement-parts). I replaced the board and everything is working properly now but to get to the board I pretty much had to disassemble the entire printer. I know that Artillery's support meant well but there was a huge language barrier and kept going around in circles with them through email. I love the printer but it definitely started out rough.

I got my X1 a little more than a week ago. It is a version 5. While it does NOT have the locking tabs on the ribbon cable connecters, I think it is also different than what is in the review here. On mine the ribbon cable fits VERY snugly into the connectors. I was wrried when I put it together that there was no locking tabs, but after inserting the cable I am less worried about it coming loose. Whether or not it is effiecient cabling for the heater requirements is tbd. Anyone else have a v5 yet besides me? Did you have the same experience with the connector?

@@MakersMuse So I went and looked at mine again last night after I posted my comment. The cables that connect to the extruder and the x-rail are less "robust" than the one that plugs into the base. The one near the base has a hard "tab" that you use to plug it in, and on mine it is very tight to plug in. I worry more about the others since they have movement. I think I am going to go ahead and print/install the cable clamps for these to at least provide some strain relief on the moving ones.

Very interesting review. At the start of the video I was wondering why my Sidewinder X1 has always delivered better prints than your one but it may be because I have never used the filament sensor and have my spool on a shelf above the printer. I ran a spool through the sensor yesterday while I was calibrating the extruder and noticed that at some angles, the sensor grips the filament pretty tightly. Possibly too tightly. I would also note that at high speeds, that heavy bed flying around can cause artifacts on larger prints but I like this machine and it is in danger of becoming my go to printer, even over my Prusa MK3s.

Take the spool holder off the frame and make one that is mounted to the side off the frame of the machine. Any shaking while printing, is amplified, with the spool on top, of the frame which would be re-transmitted back to the whole machine. This might cause the whole supporting frame to move, while printing, and cause the head "wiggle". Just my thought.

Would not buy this printer until the ribbon connector and stability is improved. Flat ribbon has been used in inkjet printer carriages for decades so it can be done reliably. Not a fan of the Anycubic style glass bed. I immediately replace them with plain borosilicate glass beds: Some folks have covered why: Print resume fails if the bed cools, finish of the print surface that contacts the bed, wait time for a large bed to be able to remove prints (I'd use a small fan to speed things up), and non-PLA filament can stick too well and damage the coating.

I disassembled the spool holder from the gantry, because it is too much weight on the top, which makes the gantry shake slightly due to axis movement. First realized it, when I had a 2.5 kg spool on top and the print quality was just awful. I've got better results since I removed it.

@AntiheldMTB
5 жыл бұрын
It is all connected to the frame. And there is no damper between the axis-connections (XY) and the frame - so every vibration is given to the gantry as well. And the more weight is on top which comes into movement the more it shakes. The shaking also increases with the height of the print in Z.

It's more that they are apparently friction fit. That seems like a ludicrous decision when they apparently had actual clips before. Ribbon cables can be alright, especially since they aren't being torque around off-axis, but the same pressing motion Angus is doing in his demonstration of the issue is what will happen over time as the gantry moves around. And I don' t really see why they would have swapped to friction fit connectors, either. They already have pumped features into this machine for the price, so I don't know why they'd try to save a penny on swapping to friction fit cables.

I have 5 different printers and one of the best changes I made was changing all the Z lead screws to 2mm pitch instead of the 4mm pitch they came with. On large volume machines I found that the the gantry moved too easily when not powered and they did not stay parallel to the print bed.The 2mm pitch helps with Z accuracy and also eliminates any uneven movement of the gantry. Of course the steps per mm needs to be changed in the software but that is pretty simple math.

Nice honest review Angus! Keep it up! We were testing a sidewinder for our new print farm. It's got a lot going for it and we were very happy with the kinematics. The issues we faced and the reasons we decided against it in the end are:- 1) the hotend isn't getting enough current through the ribbon cable and can't pump out filament at a reasonable rate - slows down prints and defeats the purpose of the Volcano - Maybe it was our version ( I think they're up to 5 or 6 now) but you can see the results of this where you have almost matt looking straight sections of prints and then it goes watery at corners where it slows down and the extruder temp catches up for a fraction of a second 2) the bed height sensor isn't accurate enough to rely on - looks to be +-0.1mm - the BLtouch in the works will fix this well. 3) like you Angus, we found the ribbon cables to be a problem with no lock on ours too and it coming unplugged too easily - would love a more secure connection. They're so close to what could be an iconic printer but we'll likely wait for v2 or 3 before looking at them again.

@Don Gray Hi Don, it's hard to keep up with the different versions with small and major changes Evnovo has made. I actually thought we had a version 4 but I think it was more like version 3.5 as we didn't get the ultrabase. A couple of months after we got ours, Evnovo 'fell on their sword' and shut up shop to work on the problems that the sidewinder was having before they came back with a new/better final version - this was all on their official FB page. The new version is what I thought would have been version 5. I'll give them credit for working hard to fix problems but I'm not prepared to be a beta tester for them. After that, we lost confidence in buying a bunch of these and stopped following. It's still a promising platform so I hope their next printer builds on that.

Thanks for your review. I got my X1 via Gearbest at a nice price at the end of Sep2019. It took me just over 1-hour to assemble this printer because I read the instructions. It printed the first cube pretty nice, but it did have some of the issues you mentioned. I didn't think that a spool holder would cause such issues. I am impressed with this printer. When it is printing I am sitting less than 5 feet from it and I have to turn around and pull closer to hear it. Your take on the ribbon cables has hit home. I am in the process of working with Artillery support to fix an issue of the extruder not feeding now. I did all of the troubleshooting things, check for a jam or clog in the nozzle or extruder feed area. I found that the filament lever had broken tab around the small v-wheel that guides the filament and the area where the stepper motor shaft comes through was cracking. Of course, you get a couple spares and I fix that. The nozzle was heating up to the setpoint of 190C, no feeding of through the nozzle. During my checks, I found that the large gear was not moving for extrusion or retraction. I removed the entire assembly from the printer and disconnected it from the PCB and plug a cable into it from another printer and the motor works great. Today I finally found where my issue is, and it comes from the ribbon cable on the Z-axis rail. After that cable out I started getting MINTEMP errors on the extruder. The bad cable had one of the pin connection (position 21) burnt through on 30-pin cable. I don't know how that happened but it did. Before all of this, the printer was printing famously. Swapping that out still has not removed the MINTEMP error yet. So the issue may have migrated down into the connector and caused a problem with something internal. I even check the thermistor sensor and it reads between 79-84k ohms. I am not sure of what the actual value should be since the sensor has a 3x5mm can on it. I have sent images and videos to Artillery support and I am waiting on to see what they will say and do. I don't what to open the case yet, but will if I have to. I really like this printer and I want it working. Thanks again for your review.

@Don gray i could not find your response to mine, but i want to state some things: you told me to not buy this printer in the first place because i am unable to help myself..well, in my opinion a printer has to work out of the box, it has to be tested and after mounting a benchy should be possible to produce without having the printer fail hardware wise. as i do print alot, if have chatted with the manufacturer before the purchase and they told me all problems have been solved, i got the newest version and leverproblem, heatflatness and cableissue was solved and i was very disappointed. I think it is fine for you if you are willing to print necessary parts for a printer to get it to work properly, i am not willing to do this, we are not talking about upgrades, we are talking about problems which easily could have been changed by the manufacturer. you are telling me i am to harsh on the levers, you are telling me i could print it in petg,draw one myself and stop complaining...well i do not get payed for posting sidewinder videos, nore have i intentione to do this in the future...so i state my honest opinion...what about people who have the sidewinder as their starter and are not able to print new parts because the printer is delivered DOA like in my case?they are screwed and must rely on the customer support.....by the way, we are running the printer on 220 volts and not having a ground on the heatbed is a major problem, as you would never get it to the market legally as an official company...as the product is delivered without a strainrelief, the possibility of getting a short is valid...so, please accept people who just want to have a functional product delivered..by the way, the newest levers delivered as a sparepart were broken again, because the hole for the pin was slightly too small, with hammering the pin inside, the lever broke....so they were delivered as a broken part!.....

Which makes zero sense; Even in bulk, there's really no real cost difference between the types of "FPC" connectors, at least when checking Alibaba. These appear to range between .01 USD (one penny) - about 1 USD per with a min order of 1000 units. In fact, when I try looking for these, the most common ones are the "Flip lock" and "Stuffer Actuator" (slide lock) types. I am actually having trouble finding ones without the clampy bit. Based on the average price I've seen these from other sites other than Alibaba, if we estimate 30 cents per unit and buy, let's say 5000 bits, that's 1500 USD. Considering both parties (the circuit board manufacturer) and supplier for the connectors are likely down the street from each other in China, it's likely the costs would be significantly lower. In other words, there's zero excuse for this from any 3D printer company. It's not being cheap, it's being ignorant.

Have you experienced a "Checksum Mismatch" error. The machine stops for a few seconds. The error or warning shows up on the touchscreen. It resumes printing on its own but leaves a tiny blob at each stop point. Good print quality otherwise.

Hey Angus. This is unrelated to the video, but I figured this would still be the best way to contact you. I have a question about combat robots. I've seen videos of people making little wheeled robots with wheels that can drive sideways if two of the wheels spin one way and two spin the other. I was wondering why you don't see these types of wheels on combat robots since that would basically allow the robot to strafe, giving it a huge mobility advantage. Considering how often you see robots struggling to turn themselves to face their opponents, this seems like a worthwhile thing to implement.

Just wanted to give people a heads up. Artillery's website is down. You can't get official firmware updates or slicer profiles any more. I am unsure if this is a temporary thing due to covid-19 or if they are down for good. I took a look at there facebook page and there isn't any info on it about it. So heads up for anyone looking to buy one.

It looks like the printer is on a small table. Assuming he was printing on the small table, he could maybe use a larger table that would be less susceptible to moving, could possibly be the fix to the layering issues. This is a common problem with direct drive printers, since they produce a lot of wobble.

Try moving the filament off the top gantry, to much weight, it seems like a upgraded copymaster 3d and that had the same problems i had to mod the absolute hell out of that machine to get a half good print out of it. I would also put some gantry braces on that as well. Its seems like it has alot in common with the copymaster 300 so i would keep away from it and not risk it.

We were the first ones to review this printer back in January when the printer was just released. Being the first version it does not include the modified leadscrew couplers but with the flat cable connector locks. We also noticed the layer inaccuracy and we also tested all the same things mentioned in this video and a few things more. We tested without the filament runout sensor, without the stock filament holder and with the filament spool out from the frame, with new drivers, with a different extruder gear, electric checks of all flat cable signals, alignment of both leadscrews, removed the top leadscrews bearings, etc. The only thing not tested was the manufacturer's new leadscrew coupling solution. Our results (archieved after the video upload) are a little bit better compared with the ones from this video but the fact is that after a few machine version updates, the printer still has the main issue of the random layer misalignment.

Seems like a decent printer. For the price I expect auto bed leveling, but it is direct drive, so there's that. I still kind of feel like these i3 style printers that are larger then say, 250x250x2xx are somewhat flawed designs since the bed ends up being so heavy, it's hard to fight ringing on that Y axis. The layer inaccuracies are something I struggle with with my ender 3 as well. I think some of it just comes down to slop in the design of my printer though, so I'm suprised to see it on a printer with 2 z-screws.

On the product's page of Gearbest, you can see in the description a short guide on how to connect the flat cables. It actually states: "you may need to open the lock on some machines". I suppose the newer ones have the locking FFC connectors (a 'recent' delivery does not mean it is a recently produced machine).

Why is direct drive worse than bowden? I've only ever had direct drive but I'm looking at bowden printers now.
@Twxii
5 жыл бұрын
Well neither are particularly worse, direct drive you get better control of the filament because the extruder is closer to the hotend but bowden setups take the extra mass of the x carriage and are a bit more fiddly with retraction settings for example.

Probably a long shot, but was the Y axis gantry at the bottom close to the base when you did up the bottom screws. The gantry sets the width, and if it was at the top, the bottom width could be wider or narrower making it jam a touch.

@Don Gray Every single connector on that machine is a huge failure point. Again, my problem isn't with regular ribbon cables like the kind of connectors you have on floppy drives.
