Featuring live footage of TOOL in Boston, Ma. Danny gives us a tour of his kit and explains the science behind his set up! Also, hear the story behind Danny's signature stick design.
As much as I would absolutely love to sit at that kit and belt some stuff out I honestly wouldn't know what to do or couldn't do anything to do the kit justice at all. This man knows exactly why and how he wants his kit set up and it's amazing to hear him talk about it like a regular dude who just loves to play

I was lucky enough to catch one of his sticks after they played their set on the '97 Lollapolooza tour! He had a signature Trueline stick then & it has a giant bulge in it in about the same place where the "taper" is on his Vic Firth model. I couldn't believe I caught that thing. Then a damn security guard tried taking it away b/c it was broken & had a sharp edge to it. He put his hand on it but I held on! He tried talkin' me out of it but there was no way. I've still got it to this day!!

This is a little tough to explain. Watch the video Until The End with Chad Szeliga on KZitem. He explains how to do a flam slow and fast. It's basically like hitting two notes at the same time BUT one hits the pad or drum before the other and it gives it this cool sound.

Thank you for posting these. Danny is probably among the top five drummers in the world and he comes across as this approachable, understated guy who still does jazz gigs on the side, and talks quite intelligently about the ergonomics of a customized drum kit. Good stuff to watch...bonus points for over the shoulder shots of the "Jambi" live performance - probably my favorite song from 10,000 Days.

You can try, just find some vintage sonor drums that have thick drum shells with Tom sizes through 8”-16” with 22”or 24”bass drums that are 18” in depth. Roto toms are also great. Electronic drums are very personal, so what ever you want. If you can’t find thick drum shells, just use what you can find.

+Jon Richt Yes! They would have a guest drummer play those during Triad; the guest drummer was usually be the drummer for whichever band they were touring with. I was lucky enough to see the one with Haake, but wasn't close enough to see whoever was jamming with or even that anybody was...also didn't know about the genius almighty beastiness that is Meshuggah. My complaint for those performances is that those rack toms were too low in the mix...they might not have had time to sound-check them.

I've actually switched to Vic Firth drum sticks. As time goes by, you mature and grow, and for some reason I try not to overthink, the Vic Firth sticks just feel better than what I was playing. And in music, you follow what you feel inside: "that gut feeling" I guess you call it. Yeah Danny's kit is a definite reflection of the man himself. He plays from a point I'd never even consider as I think it is important to come at the instrument in an organic way that utilizes your strengths. So I play with a heavy driving force that is more single than double bass oriented with the less is more attitude to my playing, focusing on playing what's best for the song. And Danny does the same thing I think. He really accents the music with really creative rhythms and time signatures to create completely unique yet rockin' songs. I guess we all can't be that good. :)

Some jerkoff security guard tried to take it away from me while Prodigy was playing! Korn was supposed to headline, & they did for some of the shows, but they had to cancel the Nashville show b/c one of the guitarists had meningitis I think. So Prodigy closed the show instead. I was pumping the stick in the air & I felt someone grab it.Security tried takin it from me but I won!

Then along came Tim Alexander and I had my #3. And now?...
