Lindsey Mendick on Eileen Agar
In this most recent film, from the Artists on Artists series, sculptor Lindsey Mendick (b. 1987) talks about relating to Eileen Agar’s rebellious, playful, and experimental nature. Mendick also speaks about utilising art-making as a way to work through emotional states and to challenge gender roles and conventions.
In the series of films, Artists on Artists, contemporary artists are invited to respond to a single artist represented in Leeds Art Gallery’s permanent collection, exhibitions, or programming. Contemporary artists have been paired with artists who have had a particular influence on their practice, or have been a source of inspiration and stimulus for ideas across generations.
More about the artist Lindsey Mendick: Mendick’s uniquely autobiographical practice is rooted in her skilled work in ceramics, which she describes being drawn to for its tactile nature and its inherent manipulative qualities. By playfully combining low culture iconography and high culture methods of construction, Mendick creates humorously decadent and elaborate installations that enable the viewer to explore their personal history in a cathartic fashion. Mendick received an MA in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art, London and she has been included in solo and duo exhibitions, recent include: The Yellow Wallpaper, East Side projects, Birmingham, (2020), Space Commission, Space Ilford, UK (2019), PROUDICK, Lindsey Mendick and Paloma Proudfoot, Hannah Barry, London (2018), SMUT, Jamie Fitzpatrick, Lindsey Mendick, VITRINE Gallery, Basel (2018).
This film was made by Nick Singleton and generously supported by the Leeds Art Fund.
