So I am doing a little bit more facecam as I am winding down for the year and drawing more often, let me know what you thought! I personally plan to include more visuals of what I am saying with this type of video in the future. Also...This was originally 10 minutes longer with personal anecdotes and a more in-depth look at my page but I had to cut those out. If you want to see what I had to say, become a Patron and this months rewards will be released in one week!

If not you can totally transfer to a small usb regularly and just keep your local storage less used up, and regularly clean up your storage so you only have what is necessary on your ipad.

Not everybody who's an artist on IG draws for others. I happen to make a web comic series thru my IG page and I've always liked making comics since I was in 4th grade. When I discovered there are other people who share the same sense of humor as I do, I decided to share my works with others. It's never been about other people but with social media helping to spread art all over, figured I might as well spread my joy to others. The happiness isn't necessarily from who likes/engages with it for every artist: some just like to have a structured series to make or a story to tell. If somebody wants to make something just for others and that makes them happy, that's great but I don't feel you can lump every artist on IG in that same category.

my problem is that getting more likes means Instagram pushes your work to more people and you need a large amount of people to see your work in order to make a living as a freelancer so i just keep having to try to push past the algorithm... its the same with other social medias i feel like not caring about likes is a luxury for artists that already have an audience they make money with
@incognitopencil

Exactly! I feel like most people who say you shouldn't aim for likes or followers either already have a lot of followers or simply don't have the ambition to earn any form of income from it. Caring about likes is not bad. Not at all. But the more you care the sadder you can get if it doesn't work out. Getting followers is a snowball effect, except the smaller the snowball the harder it is to get it moving. Likes help it move. I just looked you up on Instagram btw, and your art is great! Just keep doing what you love and keep trying to grow followers and hope you have some luck. That's about all you can do, really.

Leslie Zani COPPA is a company or something like that, that protects children on the internet I believe. They have sued KZitem because children’s information have been collected (even though you’re not even allowed to have an account if you’re under 13) and now you tubers might be sued if you make ‘content for children’. Even if it’s not. If you have colorful thumbnails, don’t curse etc it’s apparently content for children. People will get sued , loose incomes from being labeled child content (KZitem won’t recommend those videos on your recommended page or under other videos). Only because parents can’t control what their own children are doing. There is more to it than this but it’s too much to write.

My art account is very small, but i used to get waaaaaay more likes and comments when i was at the beginning of my digital art journey, and now that i've gained some skills (at least compared to before) i don't get any sort of likes, comments or reach anyone, it's very sad, to the point i don't even want to use the app anymore. I stopped caring about the likes a long time ago, I’ve had many accounts on Instagram for various things and when they made it algorithm based, I knew there was no sense in caring about likes anymore. I see my favourite artists struggle and worry too much over the likes they get and it’s heartbreaking because they are creating such great work but the like count seems to make them feel inadequate. For that reason, I believe this change is great. The algorithm still needs tweaking because it’s brutal if you’re not posting regularly. Great video and I’m digging the face cam as well. 💚

Hearing this was kind of a good grounding reminder. I feel ashamed to say I may be one of those artists that kind of lost my way, lost my motive for doing art? When I first started, it wasn’t about the likes; I made a website so I could share my art anonymously and not really be seen, only by people who liked the specific thing I drew (I draw fan art). And also to express things I couldn’t in my personal life. A safer anonymous space. Over time I grew my page, but I noticed the phenomenon of what you said - where I’d not draw something because I’d think “well people aren’t going to like this” or “I can’t draw THIS way because it doesn’t look good on Instagram format” etc? I got to around 80k+ followers this year and still don’t feel happy with my work. I feel like my work isn’t worth 80k. I feel like I hindered my progress because I draw the same/similar things and have limited myself to specific brands of fan art for so long. I’m making a point of trying new things. I opened commissions and I don’t post those, so that started giving me a bit of confidence in me drawing things solely for my commissioners and me. I want to remember that I draw to express myself and to make other people happy. Specific people with names and faces. It may be a simple goal but I feel like it’s my goal. Thank you for this video and many apologies for my rambles!

I can't really feel a way about my art on my page since it's mixed in with so much Nintendo posts, and pics of my familyS. so I don't really even know what I want the page to be. So I kinda want to move my work over to twitter. I see a lot of people who just use their page for their art, and look at mine and it's a mess. lol I do appreciate the likes thing, since now artists and just remember why they love to create.

As far as my instagram goes, it's incredibly quaint. It seems special when I get 10 likes on one of my things. During inktober I tagged things differently, but it still usually amounted to 15ish likes. I'd like to say that the likes don't bother me, that I do it for more than the social media, but I really appreciate the likes. Stupid little notifications of validation. *shakes fist in defeat*

PRoblem is- even though likes are hidden- they're probably still a factor for the amount of exposure that Instagram will give you for that image :\

i have been posting art on my account only because i wanted to share it out with everybody. likes never made me feel anything, although comments did made me feel very proud of myself. That's why u will always find me commenting positive messages on new artists accounts so that they would also feel motivated and won't give up easily. And their is no doubt that algorithm is a mess , and i hate it.

I was gonna post something long-winded like "You're art is great and you seem like a great dude but of course you can say likes don't matter, you already have a following" but eh it's not like that gets anybody anywhere. I've been trying hard while trudging along in obscurity as a digital artist. But. We persevere. 'Bout to start my first oil painting. Fingers crossed.

Instagram is a joke. It's just a popularity contest. Someone literally TRACED one of my drawings and posted it, and when I called him out on it I got attacked, all because he has 50k followers and I only have 1000. No one on there cares about art. They just care about meaningless "likes" and how many followers they can get.

Hey Josh, when we're doing you pencil art earlier in your ig. What books did you learn from for study's? I like the concept of measurements and all that but I can't find a great source. Thanks you in advance.

I actually wasn't reading any books! I did research online about the loomis and reilly methods and kept using them until I found a way to understand them for myself. Now I don't need such strict guidelines (you will find they limit you at a certain point)

I really wouldn’t mind the likes being gone. I’m guilty of waiting for likes or posting art I don’t even like just for likes?? it’s sad but I’m aware of it but I’d honestly rather be taking that time to create something 😭

Social Media can actually be a way to improve your art, believe it or not. Thats practically the only reason I post my art on other platforms. It gives publicity to your artworks letting other people criticize and comment on your artwork. Getting feedback from others can help fix your artwork. You don't necessarily need to be instagram famous for this. As long as there is talent and persistency, there will always be an audience.

It's easy to know if you've been shadow-banned. Search your posts under the tags used and see if they appear, just make sure to click on "recent" under each hashtag. I've never heard of anyone having it happen

Do you think it’s important to come up with a unique “artist” name? My name is kind of plain and I would prefer not to use it. I want to pick something that perhaps isn’t even a name at all. Is that something that people would notice, and is it important? What made you choose ergojosh?

Most of their likes are bot likes, accounts that set a program to insta like anything that pops up on certain hashtags (for example they can set it to like every 10th post that gets posted using the hashtag Bohemian) so the person (if there is one) behind the account doing the likes never even sees what was liked....it's just goes liking everything in the hopes of getting followers. True story, they have fake likes.

They've screwed up their own algorithm and instead of actually fixing it they're hiding it so you won't see it as obviously. Do you guys have any actually good platform recommendations for someone who wants to do art? Also; Josh, your happy little smile when you talked about how good it felt to enjoy making art made my day brighter. 🤧

I've always drawn what I've wanted to, but I think my issue is that my work varies so much from post to post that I don't have a specific audience to cater to. But part of me is ok with that because I'm not drawing for them, I'm drawing for me and sharing that with them. Remembering that distinction helps me not focus on likes so much and instead keep chugging along doing what I want to do and getting better in the process

oh man I relate to what you’re saying. I am envious of artists who’s page/portfolio flows and is all a similar motif. Mine looks more like an art sharing page, I try many different styles and mediums and they tend to come out quite different. Just had a lady question if I even drew something ....... I just can’t seem to find a particular “style “, it’s just all over the place

it would be interesting if no one knew how many likes you had except advertisers and instagram. the artists are still aware of their own metrics so that can kill creativity.

This is all too real. Most of my artistic growth were achieved when i was just drawing for myself. But even then i still felt so frustrated. Many times i've considered just doing what more trending artists were doingbut frankly im glad i didnt. I really love my art and the way i do it even if only a handful of people will like it.
