The sequencer on the MiniBrute 2S is indeed generous, especially if you compare it to some of the other monosynths like the more basic sequencer of the Mother 32 or the 16-step sequencers of the Korgs. Great video, thanks very much.

tbh the motion sequencing on the korg is nothing to sneeze at. the minibrute2s is twice the price and doesn't have motion recording. active step is another trick the monologue can do that the brute can't. i own both and they're both equally as fun

@earlsfield

lowpass eq Depending on what you want to do, control voltage allows you yo fine-tune different synth components per step. You can even control multiple components and modules ( on Minibrute OR on another modular or semi modular synth, as long as those modules have cv input) at the same time by using stacker cables. Control Voltage is the first form of synthesizer control - long before MIDI was developed, CV was used to send pitch and other commands across synths. Super cool thing on Minibrute 2S sequencer tracks 3 and 4 is the fact that you can change starting amount of CV you are sending - from 1V to 8V, this is very useful for detailed control. Combining these two tracks and stacker cables you can pretty much control super large setup - this sequencer was designed with modular in mind primarely.

I’ve been scratching my head with 2 or 2s. Been wanting to muddle with modular for a few years and recently the Moog bundles have caught my ear, but can’t afford new, the Subharmonican I like very much. The only piece of analogue gear I have, that has been in my proud possession for a very long time, is a Stylophone (don’t laugh) it’s what I refer to as the Mothership version, it’s a 350’s which has a fat knarly sound. The sequencer on the minibrute seems impressive. Is it good for playing live? P E A C E ; )

@@FUNKINETIK First, i would never lough. Price if the synth or its complexity do not dictate the outcome. I have 50 quid dyi modules and a Jupiter 6, Prophet 10 and REV 2, OB 6, UDO 6, Pro 2 and 3, Dx7 , JV 1080 and a modular setup - so i just want to say, any instrument is good if you get great things out of it. I am not crazy about Subharmonicon, but thats my personal stuff. Now, If you are going to go into modular, get S. It is simply a beast, I have Elektron devices and it is the closest thing you can get for your modular stuff - remember, modular sequencers are extremely overpriced and limited. Here, you can control 4 tracks, use CV, choose evelopes and lfo per step so its totally mental and great to use on modular system. I use oktatrack as my main sequencer, but i sequence all my modular via Brute 2S. Don't hesitate for a second. Minibrute 2 is just another mono. S is literally igiving you main building blocks for modular, - 2 oscillators, 2 lfos, lo cut and hi cut filter, envelopes and this insane sequencer. You can then go get some more exotic oscillators, filters and effects. Definitely recommending 2S. Even sequencer is worth the 400 quid alone, and you do get a decent oscillators and filter with it. Also ,it is amazing for playing live as it is easy to change stuff on fly, i mean, Arturia sequencing is one solid thing that is built for performance.

@OscillatorSink
3 жыл бұрын
Typically the trick is to use two resonant filters (bandpass ideally, but a high and low pass together works too), but as you only have one on the MB2 here are some other ideas. Use the bandpass filter with the resonance quite high, and patch the triangle output into ATT1 so you can turn that upto get some audio rate modulation of the filter. Base your core sound around a mix of the Sawtooth wave and the square wave - but set your pulse width nice and tight to get that nasal, throaty component to the sound. You might also find that using oscillator sync will get you some vocal sounds, so tune VCO 2 the same as VCO 1, patch VCO 2 out into VCO 1 sync, and then patch the ADSR out into the FM input of VCO 1 (and turn up the FM knob to taste).

@@OscillatorSink awesome! How should I set the vibrato in relation to all of that? I can’t get it without giving it this choppy ugly vibrato sound while the wheel isn’t even on. It’s also not a consistent velocity or sound every time I play a note. Do you have a fix for that? Thank you!

@@OscillatorSink it’s kind of hard to describe. It has the tone I want but when I try to get rid of the really bad vibrato, anything I play with to get rid of it seems to also get rid of that good talkbox tone. The vibrato sounds like there’s still vibrato even when the wheel is all the way down, and then when I turn it up, it adds another thicker vibrato. And when I turn all 3 rates off and have no vibrato at all, there’s like this clicking sound, almost like a metronome.

Inspiring video and one of the reasons I purchased an MB2s. But, something isn't making sense to me that I'm hoping you can provide some insight on: If VCO2 is already in tune with VCO1, why does it need to be re-tuned when plugging in note output from Mod1? And why did you need to switch VCO2 from "fine" to "all"? I suppose I could understand if VCO2 was off by an octave or two (a volt or two) when receiving Pitch input, but why is it flat or sharp?
@OscillatorSink
4 жыл бұрын
When the VCO2 pitch doesn't have anything patched into it, it's hardwired to follow VCO1, relative to how you have the pitch knob set. That's because it's getting the same v/oct CV as VCO1, and the pitch knob is basically an attenuator. As soon as you patch something in to the Pitch In for VCO2, that relationship is broken because its no longer getting the same CV as VCO1. Try patching a patch cable into the VCO2 pitch and see what happens: it should stay still and it won't necessarily be still at a frequency that makes musical sense any more, despite how you had it tuned previously. And yes, I set the range to all because I want to tune it down. I hope that helps, let me know if you need me to try to explain anything a different way.
@jbuck802
4 жыл бұрын
@@OscillatorSink The best explanation I've had of this to date, thank you. The "relative to how you have the pitch knob set" is the part that finally makes sense to me. It's the internal routing of VCO1 to VCO2 that's causing the offset (as I thought) but hadn't considered it being relative to the pitch knob. I was hoping to use VCO2 as a standalone voice with the rest of my modular gear but it must be re-tuned anytime it's patched in or out of. I suppose I just have to get used to this.

Im planning on buying one but I live in Uruguay so its not easy getting specific gear here. What I imagine is having 2 notes played simultaneously from a holded chord, and having those notes change periodically, and since it would be randomised, every time the harmony would be different. Hope that it inspires one of your videos! thanks so much

OS..I have a question please if you have time to answer. I know you are very busy and I highly redpect you because you are extremely clever and a guru re synths. I cannot afford the Moog collection so have to be happy with my means. Okay...I have the Arturia Minibrute mk 1. I also will have the Korg SQ64 sequencer which by all accounts does not like MIDI but respects all analogue appliances connected to it. So.... I am going analogue old syle ( because I am 73) also newbie. Having used the minibrute just a few times and love what it is capable of..... I thought I might buy in circa four or five of them and having only one with the keyboard. I will mount the rest keyboardless to save room. Do you thing that is a good compromise to spending thousands on super kit I cannot afford? I was just thinking that the minibrute ( old one) has so much there and can all be used in conjuction with my SQ64 which ( apparently) just loves the cv ins and outs and not too happy with midi. Have I gotten this right? What do you think? I am going ambient but also like to beat it up techno or whatever its called. I thought that Anologue with the right reverb could well be accomplished with a stack of Minibrutes? I will be honoured if you find time to answer. You are extremely clever.
@OscillatorSink
6 ай бұрын
While there is wisdom to sticking to one thing that you like, personally I think there's a lot of good semi-modular bits around that price point (if buying second hand) that you might be able to get a more varied setup. I'd also point out that if it's CV you're looking to make use of, the SQ64 is only giving you 4 tracks of it, so more than 4 synths might need an expanded sequencer setup. I actually found the SQ64 to be fairly competent as a midi sequencer when I had one (although I didn't stress test it, as I wasn't really doing much multi-instrument setups at the time). I will also put this idea out there: If space is of concern, and if the analog, CV interfacing wasn't a requirement, for the cost of 4 MBs you would probably be at the price point of a second hand Elektron Syntakt, which in one box is 3 analog synths (somewhat equivalent to 3 mini brutes, but that can also do drums), 8 digital synths (both drums and melodic synths), a built in sequencer where each track could be turned into a polyphonic midi sequencer (if you sacrificed that synth part)... It's something to consider - the more bits of equipment you have to tie together, the more complex things get; there's much to be said for a single, powerful groove box. You would also not have to move from your main desk to tweak sounds. It depends on your preference, some people like big, multi instrument setups with a master sequencer holding it together - personally though, it drives me mad!

I really love the knobiness and the sequencer looks just rad (also an potential entry point to modular madness) based upon various reviews, loopop and the like. Any word is appreciated.
@OscillatorSink
4 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's redundant at all. Next to those two it probably feels a bit limited given how much power exists in those two instruments to do "a whole track", but it's about the experience as much as the sound sometimes, and this will offer a very different experience I think. And yeah, semi-modular synths like this are a great way to explore the modular thing without going full on straight away.
@OmriCohen-Music
5 жыл бұрын
Such nice timbers... Reminds me a bit of the sounds of the O Coast in a way. About the BSP, I guess that you can achieve that with the drum sequencer. You can have a separate line for AD envelopes, but you would need some kind of a slew limiter. Send the gates to the slew limiter and from there to modulate the VCA.
@OscillatorSink
5 жыл бұрын
I'm trying to find a way to properly approximate a west-coast style patch... Lots of ideas, but I'm almost always a VCA short (apparently you can never have too many, so I'm told). Does the drum track send out gates or trigs on the BSP though? I think trigs, so would the slew limited have enough to work with in that case?
@OmriCohen-Music
