Thank you for a very clear video. MiniLab's software and hardware integration is great. Everybody can operate it intuitively without any knowledge. Just turn the knob and tap the pad. And it's easy to carry around. MiniLab seems to be a better choice for someone like myself who has little knowledge of hardware and synthesizers.

Hey a few questions for you. I'm interested in getting into iOS music production and would like to get a midi controller. For a basic controller it seems to me like the best two to start out with are either the Akai MPK mk2 or Arturia Minilab mk2. Of these do you have a preference? Also, I'd not terribly interested in making beats with pads and am OK sacrificing them for better key action. If that's the case would there be a better suggestion for a controller in the same price range? cheers
@BoBeats
7 жыл бұрын
+MysteronLunaris i think the arturia has better build quality. And stronger software package for mac/pc. Hmmm, option w/o pads... i do not really have a suggestion for that
@happyplace2225

I have the MK1. I actually use it with my iPad. You need the camera connection kit, but you can plug it right into you iPad (or iPhone) and it will work with any app you have. It's great for travel because it's so small, and if you have Korg Gadget or something like that, you can make tracks with nothing but this and your iOS device. I'd be interested in this for the upgraded keybed.

The only thing you need to consider is if you need actual midi ports. The USB port works for midi just like Earmonkey Music says. But if you need real midi connections you could always go for something like the KeyStep from Arturia.
@j.du6

Having endless encoders is so the parameters DON'T jump and the competition doesn't have them. This is significant. They are more expensive than pots. All you have to do is switch them from "Absolute" to "Relative" in the MIDI Control Center; a specific device button/s may toggle this as well; boom, no more "jumping"! I want to know how the pads are, specifically. The original's were not so great. The keys are obviously better than MK I and if the same as the KeyStep, better than the competition's crappy, shallow, spongy minikeys. The smaller number of presets is a bummer.
@BoBeats
7 жыл бұрын
+Johnny W solid advice on the encoders. But. All non motorised midi faders occasionally jump from what I know. But I will chrck this out! If you check my Yt I have another first look vid where I compare the MiniLab mk2 to two other midi keyboards. Arturia say they are the same as the keystep. I am unsure. They have more travel distance and resistance than my Minilogue and other midi keyboards.
@j.du6
7 жыл бұрын
BoBeats if they are relative they don't jump. Try it with a stock synth that you map some knobs to. That's the whole point of (relative) endless encoders (after switching to relative) that, if configured properly, don't jump; downside is that you have to turn them more than pots, but you can adjust the acceleration to compensate. Not a perfect solution but close. Glen Darcey from Arturia explained that the slim keys are a real keybed with springs, unlike the minikey competition, which explains why they are better. Enjoyed your vid BTW. 👍
@BoBeats

Thanks for elaborating Johnny! I will read up and check this out because it sounds brilliant. I don't speak midi very well but I am slowly learning. Education is always welcomed. Good to know about the Keys. They feels real nice which surprised me.
@BoBeats
7 жыл бұрын
Another question Johnny: So if I set a midi controller to relative they will always start from where the software is at? So even if the knob is at position X and software counterpart is at Y when started, then when I move the knob it will start from Y?
@j.du6
7 жыл бұрын
BoBeats yep. The whole idea is that it picks up parameter values wherever they are -- pretty nifty. This way presets are how they were intended. Some controllers (like Nektar) have pots but have "soft pickup", where you start low but the value doesn't change until you reach where the parameter value in the synth is and it "picks up" there. Either approach beats jumping for sure. Proper endless encoders aren't that common because they increase manufacturing costs.

No the Arturia Analog Lab Lite is a new "version" of the Analog Lab 2. The Lite version = 500 presets. Analog Lab 2 = 5000+ presets. The price of the new package is 99 euro, and upgrade to the Lab 2 is about 29 euros (they have changed the prices a bit so I am not 100% sure).

+Sarang Dhage good question! They seem quite comparable. From just looking at the Launch Key I recon it has a little more control for your Daw compared to the MiniLab 2. But the softsynths included are less powerful, older, and not upgradeable. Also the MiniLab 2 probably got the superior keyboard. But I think either is a great option in the around 100 euro segment.
@j.du6

BoBeats actually depends on the DAW and if it has a controller script for the controller. Live and Bitwig have full integration (for Minilab) for example. This controller comes with Live Lite for which it is fully mapped, out of the box. The keys on the Minilab are superior as are the encoders (over pots) in most cases.
