Just ordered an Arturia Minilab MK2 as a first midi controller. After dozens of hours of research on lots of good candidates, i thought going for the higher quality keys and the better build quality was the right move for a first controller. I will say, I do think this video in particular was perhaps a bit overly focused on DAW control, especially being specific to Ableton, and I would have liked some extra attention to fine details like how they feel to play, key response, sensitivity, (which I think you did a good job on with the encoders, and even the keys in some of your other videos; the segment in this video on key response was just a bit short, and the camera angle didn't lend itself well to showing the slightly slower response on the Minilab). All that aside, out of everything I watched on these mini keyboards, your videos were the most detailed and best produced. I made sure to use the affiliate link also, so hopefully Amazon tosses a few dollars your way :)

How's it been holdin up? What DAW do you use?
@Roselieansy
4 жыл бұрын
@@anthonyhuerta3432 Holds up great. Here's the short version of some of my thoughts: Keys feel incredible and play well. The slower response time is negligible unless you have an old/weak processor or drive in your computer. My PC has been having some disk usage issues lately, and when it's bad, the key response feels particularly slow. I've also had issues with notes "sticking". I don't know a better word for it, because the keys themselves never stick, but occasionally when you play a key, the note keeps playing even after the key is released. Pressing the key again or starting/stopping playback fixes the issue everytime. Certainly frustrating, but I haven't found any other reports of this issue online, so I think it's an issue specific to my unit. Encoders are nowhere near as good as I was hoping. Very finicky and oversensitive, to the point that turning the encoder too fast can sometimes cause an opposite reaction in the parameter. Say you're using an encoder to modify your cutoff filter; if you turn the encoder too quickly up, the parameter will occasionally not change at all, or even drop down. I find myself using the encoders sparingly. The bundled software is nothing too special, I expected more out of it. Analog lab is a good enough program, but it's worth noting that it's not a synthesizer of any kind, it's a library of synthesizer presents. There's realistically not a lot of sound design you can do within the plugin, and the parameters you can adjust on each instrument preset are seemingly random. It's also a hefty program, and it can eat up a lot of usage on your processor if you're using a lot of tracks or multiple instances of analog lab. It's also worth noting that a lot of the instruments available don't strike me as even remotely useful in a musical context, but perhaps I'm just not as creative with my sounds as some. It's got some good piano and organ presets, a few nice leads, and loads of nice pads. Overall I give analog lab a 5/10. Useful, but it could be so much more. Long-time Arturia users have criticized Arturia for scaling back Analog Lab to give customers more of an incentive to buy full versions of their programs. I'm focussing on the negatives here because that's what I really cared about when looking for a controller. Onto the more positive side: In my opinion the drum pads are much better than people give them credit for. They work perfectly fine, aside from the key response that I mentioned earlier, and you can really slam them with no fear of harming the system. They could stand to be slightly more sensitive. Zero complaints on the key-bed Zero complaints on durability or build quality. This feels like a professional piece of gear. It's got the heft and feel you'd expect out of something like this, it doesn't feel cheap at all. I give the Minilab and it's packaged content a 7/10. Build quality : 9/10 Durability : 9/10 Playability : 8/10 Pads : 7/10 Encoders : 5/10 Packaged software : 6.5/10 In retrospect, I think a small Native Instruments controller or Novation controller would have suited my needs a little bit better. That said, I don't regret my purchase at all. It's a great piece of hardware and I use it pretty much every day. If you're on a tight budget and can't afford to buy a controller just to have it break, this is the one for you--no question about it in my mind. Okay so I went on a little longer than I intended. To answer your other question, I bought this keyboard for use with Cakewalk and have since moved on to Ableton. The keyboard has performed great with both DAWs with no notable difference in functionality.

yeah, but whats even more important is that they keys have a large range of velocity path and can move much up and down. cause if not, you have not good control to play soft, even if they keys have more weight. i'm also a piano player and want a small midi controller for my analog synths outdoors, but i hate it when there is no range of velocity and the keys are so "flat". because of that, i connect everything to my nord stagepiano, if i'm at home.

One thing not mentioned about the endless encoders is that they always adjust up and down from the current state. The encoders on the Launchkey won't necessarily reflect the current state of whatever value you're controlling, so tweaking involves twisting to find the current state and then going from there... or just jumping to some new value and messing around.
@JohnJohnCrusher

I hate this so much. I’ve bought so many small keyboard with “infinite encoders” only to find out they are literally useless cause the software / generic drivers are trash. I don’t want wanna work in ableton or use any stupid daw just for this, it’s kinda ridiculous that these “pseudo infinite encoder controllers” even exist but what is more Laughable even is that I’ve found more “ripoff” controllers actually doing this right than proper controllers such as the MK 3 by Akai - yet NO reviewer even mentions aspects like this. Why? What kind of “review” is that then? So lame. Let me save you some time in case you’re in the same situation as I was (though I know it’s been a year since the last reply on this comment, but it might help someone else so…): For the Akai owner, are you sure you CANNOT change the encoders (in the software editor) so that they become “relative encoders”? This is generally what you want for infinite encoders but many controllers come configured with ABSOLUTE even when they have RELATIVE (infinite) encoders. Hopefully this is an option in their editor because it’ll fix your issues. Once again, I have to re-state this: why are all these “reviewers” not even covering this? It’s kinda ridiculous - makes me really wonder how much they actually use these things because honestly it is THE MOST PARAMOUNT ASPECT to compare any controller with infinite encoders. I’m glad the MK2 has great keys, for sure… but i came here for the “infinite encoders” and no one even speaks about these things. Kinda ridiculous tbh.

Minor head's-up, the versions of this being sold on Amazon (and likely most other sources with new/old stock) include a "coupon" for a $29 upgrade path to the full Analog Lab version, but only after you register the hardware and Lite version do they make you aware the upgrade is now $69. If the cheap path to the better synth version is a major purchase criteria for buying one of these over other compact controllers, just be aware it's now $40 more expensive than most KZitem reviews of the product indicate prior to May, 2019 when Arturia moved to Analog Lab version 4 and the more expensive upgrade price.

Install the Native Komplete Kontrol software on N. Instruments website, it's free and it's a kind of plugin hub for other plug-ins
@st0rmchild
3 жыл бұрын
Sorry everyone, I didn't get any notifications about the replies. Here's a rough overview: 1. Download Native Access from NI (I think you have to create an account first, but it's free). 2. Open Native Access and use it to install Komplete Kontrol. 3. Launch Komplete Kontrol (as a standalone app). In the preferences, enable your LaunchKey Mini mk3 as a MIDI input. 4. On the LaunchKey, hold shift and press the top-right pad to switch to the "Custom" mode for the knobs. 5. Click the "MIDI" button in the toolbar of Komplete Kontrol. Click on each knob and turn a knob on your LaunchKey to assign it. 6. Load up any instrument plugin in Komplete Kontrol - either by browsing on the left, or by clicking the plug button in the toolbar, then clicking [+] to load any VST. 7. Click the knob button in the toolbar. You should see a bunch of controls for the VST you loaded. Test the knobs on your LaunchKey. You should see the knobs moving at the top of the window, and also the related controls moving in the VST interface. You can go through the pages of controls by clicking the labels above the knobs. (It's possible to assign buttons on your controller to go to the next/previous page, but LaunchKey Mini doesn't have any assignable buttons.) If it's all working, you can now close Komplete Kontrol, launch your DAW, load Komplete Kontrol as a plugin, and use that to load any VST. Mention me in a reply if you need any more pointers!

Arturia Minilab MK2 is very solid. I prefer good build and solid product, instead of "plastic-fantastic". As well Arturia has not obvious feature, knobs are endless encodes, not limited range. BTW you can set encoder, and if you rotate faster it could be bigger value change. So, its adjustable. As you can see even in your video, if you rotate it slow, value changed a little, if you rotate fast - its big change of value. It much more flexible IMHO.

Not really a fair comparison IMHO. You're only looking at DAW integration with Ableton, but everyone knows that Novation is basically built around that. If you i.e. take Pro Tools, Logic or Reaper then it becomes a whole different thing, since they do not use the scenes thing that Ableton uses... On the other hand, it's obvious that Analog Lab is very well integrated into the MiniLab, since it's both Arturia! So I'd like to see the comparison done again, but with the 'not-so-obivious' software... Just my 2 cents ;-)

There are plenty of channels that will break down why arturia's controller is the best companion for arturia software. Outside of specific software integration, midi controllers are basically the same. you assign knobs and pads and you play sounds...also it's safe to say that the launchkey is more feature packed. videos like this are great, but the vast majority of folks should just go out and get a controller, stop analyzing, and start making music. If there is a feature that you want after you've lived with a keyboard for a while, then do the research and find that feature.

First I bought Launchkey and I was disappointed by the quality of materials. This controller looks like cheap plastic toy and this isn't an exaggeration. The keys wobble sideways, the entire housing creaks if you get it on hands. So I've decided to buy Minilab too and the quality is much better. IMO the keys are better too, they just look more solid and the feeling is much better when you press them. Other than that: - Pads: They are much better on Launchkey. They are very sensitive, you can basically slide the finger on them and they will be triggered, while it's impossible on Minilab. Minilab has aftertouch, but I don't think it's useful for a newbie like me. BTW, my Launchkey had a little bit different colors on pads, I don't know why, probably because of the imperfections of LEDs and resistors. Not so noticeable anyway, but an another sign of lack of the quality. At least they may have any color, while pads on Minilab can have only 8 colors (R, G, B and binary combinations of them). - Knobs: You may think, that 16 knobs is too much, but it's really nice that they're directly mapped to the knobs in Analog Lab. It's good to decrease sensitivity of them, though. They also look more solid on Minilab. - Sliders: basically the same, on both controllers they have good accuracy. However, because of the more smooth surface of Minilab, Minilab wins here again for me, but you shouldn't decide basing on that, because the difference is subtle. - Ableton integration: well, it's amazing on Launchkey and it basically doesn't exists on Minilab. I'll need to spend some time to create my own profiles. Extra play and record button would probably make this keyboard easier to use, but I read that first two knobs (actually 1 and 9) can be used for this purpose. I also think that the painting of buttons/pads is better on Minilab. It's noticeable at night, when you can see the light shining through the paint on Launchkey. As you probably noticed, I don't have Launchkey anymore. I returned it and decided to keep Minilab. And I think that Minilab MK3 will destroy Launchkey completely, if they add a few more buttons and more sensitive pads. I hope this will help you to make the decision. I'm sure that some of youtubers are paid by Novation (not you, Taetro, you compared the software integration and you're completely right, Launchkey wins here), because I just can't understand, how one can say, that Launchkey has better keys. This is ridiculous. Oh, and one more thing. Novation has amazing integration with Melodics too. Good if you're new in this business, like me, but I wouldn't say it's the most important thing.

I am going for the mini lab. Been struggling to choose the novation or akai mpk 2 but you have cleared my concerns. As long as I can manually map the arturia in Ableton, that should be fine. Analog lab lite with Jupiter 8 presets and the piano D wins over the cheap launchkey and the akai

Hey, there nice comparison! I like you comparisons, they are always very in depth and useful! Can I get some advice? I'm just getting into producing etc. and I've gotten to a point in Ableton where I think a midi controller is the next step and I need one. Since I travel a lot for work, I wanted to get a small one for the road and a big one for my home recording studio, that I want to set up now that we've moved into a bigger house with enough space. I was thinking Novation Launchkey Mini Mk3 for the road (thanks to your videos! :D ) and Arturia Keylab 88 Mk2 for home. Will the differences in navigation etc. drive me crazy or do you think it's easy enough to get used to both to a point where you can work both ways without missing something from the other one? You seem to be working with both so I thought I'd ask. The Novation seems the better choice for the road to me but I don't know if the Arturia Minilab would be easier in terms of navigation since the Arturia Keylab 88 will have the same navigations?! What do you think? Thanks and cheers from Germany :)

Hey Sepehr! Im an ableton user but i have done a lot of research and even used fl studio myself. In FL you dont need the control as much, so i would go for the minilab! I really find it hard choosing between the MIDI Keyboards. I'm new to producing and I'm looking for a small keyboard to put away on my desk easily. I feel like I'm gonna use the drum pads just as much as the keys, and the knobs a little less probably. I'm originally a guitar player, so I don't have much experience with playing piano, but I can get something out of it. I was looking at the *Novation Launchkey Mini MK3* , because I really liked the design and I found that it had exactly the right amount of functions I would use. But I'm using free DAWs so I don't have Ableton. then I was looking at the *Akai MPK Mini MK3* because of the great drum pads on it, although I've hear that the build quality is a little less and I don't like the Joystick. *Arturia Minilab MK2* . I was looking at this one because it had many great functions, but the downside I found was that the drumpads are less tactile. at last I was looking at the *Alesis V25* because It had a simplistic, minimalistic design, and good build quality. any advice?

@PhillyWatts
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Talita, the controller usually doesn't affect latency. You'll need to go into your DAW settings and change them. In Ableton, go to settings and lower the buffer size. You will also need to adjust the drive error compensation. Search on KZitem or Google on this topic and you should be able to find some info on this. Good luck!
