For the film ARTWORK Frank Otto, who studied painting at the Kunsthochschule Kiel, created his own sequel to Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Little Mermaid". In just four weeks, a total of 170 individual paintings were created on the 260 square metre concrete floor of a Hamburg studio hall, which were then painted over in front of the camera in exactly 74 minutes to the music of TRIP.
Stefanie Volkmer's film, which runs backwards, conveys the illusion that the man with the two paint rollers creates the story picture by picture. In fact, the painter himself suddenly seems to become the protagonist in this fairy tale.
