I think Benji's sin was this: he cheated on his wife/ girlfriend and the other woman got pregnant and wanted to keep the baby. But he left the girl, denying the baby was even his. However she ended up either dying due to complications, or just the baby died during labor. There was a scene were benji got stuck in the bones and the chorus kept getting louder. He gets stuck several times in the movie. I believe that during labor the baby got stuck and died, and it may have killed the woman as well.

I always interpreted the hooded, disfigured entity they encounter in the Ninth Circle to be Satan himself. If you watch it carefully, half his face is fucked up, which would tie in with the biblical story of him being the most beautiful angel before falling from grace. Plus, he never attacks the group, since Lucifer’s true power is arguably temptation. The chair he’s sitting in is also like a medieval throne in my opinion

I love this movie BUT one thing I don’t like is a lot of the “sins” are things that aren’t these characters doing wrong, but feeling that they did wrong. Scarlet’s father killing himself isn’t her fault. George tried to get help for his brother but was also a child and got lost. Souxie didn’t force La Taupe to go into the “bad” part of the catacombs. I suppose it could be making a commentary on sin in this way, but at the same time it seems like sins should be things that a person did wrong on purpose, not guilt or PTSD they carry? I do still really love this movie though.

The ending is not a disney style cop out! The philosphers stone was always about purifying yourself, your soul, your bodies natural energy, to become better. I think if you have read some stuff about alchemy and how it was practiced this movie gets even better. Alot of it was done in metaphor. The stone was never something physical that would grant eternal life and change lead to gold(which I might add is represented when she wipes off the golden mirror and see's her reflection in it) they were metaphors for the change

This movie deserves so much more credit! The philosophical and spiritual connections to why everyone was in there is so divine. It seemingly looks like a woman selfishly brings these people on a quest to fulfill a deed for herself, and partly so, however in truth all we’re destined to walk the chambers of the catacomb to either die or come (up (down)) through it. As above so below. What a trip. Life can be backwards but only if you let it. The importance of letting go of these sins or lack thereof will ultimately lead us into our own version of these hellish catacombs and let us (ourselves) walk free or suffocate within the suffering. The only way out is in. The ugly is the way in. I can’t help but think about the souls who’s destiny were to create these catacombs and their traps for all of the souls who sin, an opportunity to cleanse the sins of the soul through hell. Genius architecture. Genius story line. 🙌🏻

Interestingly there is actually another scene at the end of the movie, where the three survivors end up crawling through a manhole and exiting into Paris. An interesting note is that when they crawl out the camera’s perspective is upside down. At the end of inferno when Dante and Virgil exit hell they end up on the southern hemisphere and at the foot of mount purgatory, which leads into Dante’s purgatorio. So is this implying that the characters have entered purgatory and now have a chance to travel through purgatory and enter Heaven?

I feel like the part with Benji is a really good theory and makes a lot of sense, but like you said, he is a vocal character. So I believe that since he was killed in level 8, fraud, that he himself was a fraud for being in the catacombs. He was not suppose to be there because he did not have a sin to atone for. And the women that was seen in the movie staring at him was a women who believed in worshiping the devil, and as someone who serves the devil, it was her job to kill Benji for being a fraud. Which would also explain why she was chanting in the catacombs, because she was holding a service. And she was staring at him in the being of the film because she knew what was going to happen to the group, and she was staring at him specifically because she knew he wasn't suppose to experience the levels of hell. If that makes sense.

@@AmandaBella100 no, no one is technically without sin, however Benji didn’t have a sin that was eating him up inside. His sin is being there in the first place. So when I say he is a fraud for being there, it’s like if a Christian walks into a temple or someone who is not from North Korea enters North Korea, they arnt suppose to be there. So Benji by the literal sense, is straight up not suppose to be there. Another word for fraud is deception, and Benjis deception is a human with no real sin to atone for. I guess there was a genuine curiosity and desire to improve the world that reminded me of my childhood. It was like when you would look up to the "big kids" and wanted to be like them.

Thanks to this video, I decided to look up more information about the nine circles of Hell and ended up learning about the City of Dis. Lovecraft’s “Despair” is one of my favorite poems, but there’s one line in it that I’ve never understood: “Once, I think I half remember, Ere the grey skies of November Quench'd my youth's aspiring ember, Liv'd there such a thing as bliss; Skies that now are dark were beaming, Bold and azure, splendid seeming Till I learn'd it all was dreaming - Deadly drowsiness of Dis.” I never knew what Dis was, because Googling it only brings up stuff about the Walt Disney Company, so I had no idea what the last line of that stanza was referring to... And, to be honest, I still don’t. Since you’re obviously much more familiar with Dante than I am, would you mind helping me figure out what “Deadly drowsiness of Dis” means in that context? I haven’t been able to find any analysis of that poem, and I couldn’t find any references to deadly drowsiness in the descriptions of the City of Dis I’ve read tonight, either.

Lovecraft wasn't really Christian in a country where millions were - perhaps his despair was from drowsing in the hell of being heretical in his writings to others compared to the majority he was around, that is one of the sins that is dealt with in the City of Dis after refreshing my memory. Thanks for the link to the poem, found something of his I've yet to read!

Liked this movie a lot, maybe because I am Italian and grew up studying Dante all the time. I also like The Pyramid, sometimes I come back to rewatch it. They have the same feeling.

Gluttony isn't only eating until fat. It is putting too much emphasis on food, making it a fetish.

I can only assume Benin’s death was brought upon by conceiving a child in lust. The why he looked lustfully (I assume) at the woman at the club & cave is the same why he looked at & had a child out of lust & never asking forgiveness & taking responsibility for his actions thus leading to that woman who he had lustfully looked at holding his child which is a direct blow to his soul & guilt conscious so it’s no mystery to him despite how sudden his death was to us he had all the time he needed to repent & do the right thing but instead denied it. He had a chance just like the others his just was shown because he already knew his sin while the others possibly didn’t fully understand or accepted their wrong doing so had a bit more of a chance depicted. Sin out of ignorance is looked at & judged differently than a conscious willingly sin.

hey dude, i found your channel through researching cancelled horror games. I'm not too much of a diehard horror fan myself but I'm open to being more exposed to it (games, movies). Your channel is definitely a good gateway for introducing horror media to the average person, while being aimed for those who are a fan already. I respect your passion for the genre and hope you can keep putting out these cool videos, they're really unique!

18:57 Also, the rock were the guy was sitting, could be just a rock, but it's said that Dante got his idea for the Divine Comedy while sitting on a rock that was in view of the side of the Florence Cathedral. The rock is still there.

Loved this movie when it came out. Im a big film nerd. So i think my criticism is more strict than some. Years later I found out about The Divine Comedy. I adore both. I never realize they share so much incommon. I saw the title and clicked, time to see what youre on about my good sir!

I’ve loved this film for years and it’s great to finally see someone digging into it on a symbolic and allegorical level. Couple of things: We saw Zed’s child in the muffled tunnel, that was the initial (and - to be fair - only) allusion to his sin. I thought that was Siouxsie under the cloth, hanging when Scarlet goes back for the ‘real stone’. Is it Scarlet? I actually can’t tell now, the actresses look pretty similar, I can’t under it as the actress for Siouxsie. Though it would make sense as Scarlet, like you said.

This is my favorite horror movie but after the first time I watched it, I had 2 dreams. the first dream I wasn't dead or alive, but I spoke to the devil, and he was not in a form of a demon he was an object that can talk. The second dream I think I was walking somewhere I just know I was outside but out of nowhere I started to fall down like this hole in the ground that wasn't there at first and the longer I fell the more darker it was getting, and I just knew I was in hell. No one told me anything about where I was, I just knew it was hell and I remember crying and yelling out to God to please help and save me but after crying his name for help for about a minute or more I woke up. It felt so real, and I tear up talking about it. This was about 1 or 2 months ago, and I haven't had another dream like it and don't want to. I feel like God was sending me a message.

I agree I think Zed in the end is just wtf unexplained. But I like how the sins are very subtly hinted at, its not obvious that it's going to be a film about atonement and the circles of hell. It seems like a crappy found footage horror into hell, but then its something a lot more. It would have been much worse in a way to make it glaringly obvious (to a viewer paying attention) which character was guilty of which sin from the get go.

So cool to see someone talking about this film. I loved found footage, will watch literally any, and there's a lot of not very good ones - but I really loved this one, for how unique it's setting, story and characters are. The Pyramid is another that came out around the same time, and is also a supernatural archelogy influenced thriller, much like this, but steeped in Egyptian mythology instead of Catholicism.

The thing George and Scarlett got going on kinda ruined the movie for me. Every movie don’t need a love element to it. It’s a horror movie, I don’t want to see the 2 love birds live happily ever after.

See I always thought the woman who pushed Benji down the hole was Zeb's sin; a woman and child he abandoned. But now that you bring up that he spent the film eyeing ladies up it DOES kind of make sense. Either way, solid analysis! I feel like in ten years or so AASB will become a cult classic.

I love this movie for it's dive into Mythology & Hell. It's a lot closer to what Hell is described like. A dark place filled with pain & nightmare~
