Typically I’ll upload hymns that have long storied history with the Church. However, there’s something about this melody written in 1984 that is just such a powerful one. It’s a favorite of a lot of people in its short lifespan so I decided to arrange it.
As the Deer is a well-known praise and worship hymn song by Martin J. Nystrom, a native of Seattle, Washington. Written in 1984, this song is based on Psalm 42:1 Regardless of the approach to incorporating the song into worship, one cannot deny the effectiveness of “As the deer” as sung prayer in myriad settings around the world. Mr. Nystrom attended a conference in Korea in the 1990s that began with 100,000 Korean Christians singing his song - a dramatic witness of its power.
“As the deer pants for the water,
so my soul longs after You, You alone are my heart's desire , and I long to worship You"
- Psalm 42:1
[Verse 1]
As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longs after You
You alone are my hearts desire
And I long to worship You
[Refrain]
You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my hearts desire
And I long to worship You
[Verse 2]
I want You more than gold or silver
Only You can satisfy
You alone are the real joy giver
And the apple of my eye
[Refrain]
You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my hearts desire
And I long to worship You
[Verse 3]
You're my friend and You're my brother
Even though you are a King
I love You more than any other
So much more than anything
[Refrain]
You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my hearts desire
And I long to worship You
