If a politician showed any support at all for closer ties with the EU they could potentially lose millions of votes from those who still support a hard Brexit. Losing millions of votes could lose Labour a huge majority (although they would probably still win the GE).

Yeah, like the pandemic & war in Ukraine didn't effect the rest of Europe and the world. The only difference between the UK & Europe is most EU governments don't have a brutal & cruel outdated ideology that systematically and ruthlessly attacks and purposely under funds their health services, where cancer patients cannot be seen or diagnosed let alone treated within an acceptable time frame, resulting in no treatment at all and patients dying before they're even taking seriously. Not to mention, over 14 years of Conservatives, people have been dying in hospital corridors throughout. Hospitals, schools falling down & potholes all over the country. That's right, just the same as what we were left with when Conservatives were last in power.

It isn't a matter of "does not want" it's a matter of "cannot do it in one term of office" Starmer's priorities are to repair the damage that the last 14 years of Tory government has done. Reversing our decision to leave the EU, will take much longer than that to achieve and, even then would not have immediate effect. Labour do not have that time.
