Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons of Indian History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Divyanshi Talks about the Nellie Massacre. On 18 February 1983, the massacre took place in central Assam during a six-hour period in the morning of 18 February 1983. killing an estimated 1800 men, women, and children in just a few hours. The Nellie massacre, as it came to be known, was one of the deadliest instances of communal violence in India's post-independence era, yet it remains largely unknown outside the region and overlooked in the national discourse. Nellie massacre happened in the larger context of Assam Movement which started as a fallout of the decision to hold the controversial state elections in 1983. In the midst of the Assam Agitation, after Indira Gandhi's decision to give 4 million immigrants from Bangladesh the right to vote, Students started protesting and Assam was engulfed in violence for almost 5 years which culminated in Assam Accords signed between Rajiv Gandhi government and Assam Movement leaders.
