Today I will take you on a trip to Asenovgrad and more precisely Asen's Fortress.
Created by the Thracians and later rebuilt by Byzantium to guard the gates of the White Sea Pass, this fortress was key to the region. Under the rule of Thracians, Byzantines, Belgians and Bulgarians, it has changed over the years. The fortress grew and had its own security and administration.
Noooo .. one by one.
Asen's Fortress is located 2 km from Asenovgrad. It is located on the rocky hill Mogilata and it has a great view from the road Asenovgrad - Smolyan.
That day we parked the car just after the turnoff for the fortress and decided to go upstairs. On the way we noticed in the distance how the church has majestically settled on the rock.
The fortress rises at least 100 meters above the road and was a major strategic point above the pass connecting Plovdiv with the Aegean. With its almost vertical slopes, even overhanging the river, the rocky hill is inaccessible on all three sides. The excellent location and natural protection of the area has been used since the time of the Thracians, who in the V century BC. build a fortification. In the ninth century, Byzantium built a tower, which over time grew, and around it the villages of Petrich and Stenimahos were formed. Its strategic location and rich agricultural area make the fortress an independent economic center with its own administration, army and military power.
The fortress consists of an outer fortification and an inner part (citadel). The outer fortress wall is 2.9 m thick and has a preserved height of up to 3 meters. When the Bachkovo Monastery was founded, the Byzantine military leader Grigory Bakuriani founded the monastery and presented it with the Petrich fortress and the adjacent settlements.
In 1231, Tsar Ivan Assen II made the largest expansion and reconstruction of the fortress, as evidenced by a rock inscription carved by his order. This is the reason why it was renamed from Petrich to Assen's Fortress.
The church of the Holy Mother of God Petrich is also located in the fortress. It is one of the best preserved monuments of old Bulgarian church architecture.
The fortress existed until 1410, when it was destroyed by Ottoman troops. Unfortunately in 1928. The Chirpan earthquake destroyed a large part of the church.
In the information building at the entrance there is a model of the fortress, where you can see what it looked like in all its glory.
Thank you for coming to an end. If you liked the information about the fortress, give me a thumbs up and subscribe to the canal.
