This workshop will provide SLPs with important information to understand, assess, and manage speech and swallowing challenges with adult patients who have tracheostomy tubes and/or use ventilators for respiratory support. Dr. Lemoncello will present in a dynamic format with hands-on demonstrations with tracheostomy tubes, ventilator circuits, and speaking valve placement. An adult living with a tracheostomy tube who uses a speaking valve and nighttime ventilator will also share her experiences and tips for SLPs working with this population
Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:
· describe anatomy and physiology of breathing, coughing, speech, and swallowing
· identify parts and features of four major brands of tracheostomy tubes
· describe major ventilator modes and settings with impact on speech and swallowing
· define the impact of a tracheostomy tube on airflow and pressures for speech and swallowing
· identify three communication options for someone with a tracheostomy tube
· describe the dysphagia evaluation for an adult with a tracheostomy tube
· identify three swallowing maneuvers and strategies appropriate for adults with tracheostomy tubes
