Historical context (various theories exist):
Asai Hisamasa's eldest son was born in 1545 (the 14th year of Tenbun) at Kanninji Castle in southern Omi Province, which was under the control of the Rokkaku clan.
In January 1559 (the 2nd year of Eiroku), at the age of 15, he came of age and took the name Nagamasa, receiving a character from the name of Rokkaku Yoshiyoshi. Around the same time, he married the daughter of Hirai Sadamune, a chief retainer of the Rokkaku. This indicates that the Asai clan was subordinate to the Rokkaku clan at the time.
Around April of the same year, Nagamasa divorced his wife and sent her back to the Hirai family. This act severed his ties with the Rokkaku clan, inevitably leading to an attack by Yoshiyoshi.
In mid-August 1560 (the 3rd year of Eiroku), when Yoshiyoshi attacked Hirata Castle, which had been turned over to the Asai side by Kozanase Hidetaka, the Asai dispatched their forces. At 16, this was Nagamasa's first battle, and he achieved victory at the Battle of Norada against the Rokkaku forces.
Around October of the same year, Hisamasa retired, and Nagamasa took over as the head of the Asai clan.
In the 1560s, Oda Nobunaga, seeking to break the deadlock with the Saito clan of Mino, sent Furuwa Mitsuharu as an envoy to propose an alliance with Nagamasa. The alliance was solidified through a political marriage between Nobunaga's sister, Oichi, and Nagamasa.
In late April 1570 (the 1st year of Genki), as Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu passed along the western shore of Lake Biwa to attack castles in Wakasa and Echizen held by the Asakura, Nagamasa suddenly betrayed Nobunaga, his ally, and launched an attack on the Oda-Tokugawa forces from behind. Despite being caught off-guard, Nobunaga managed to retreat successfully thanks to the efforts led by Kinoshita Hideyoshi.
In July 1572 (the 3rd year of Genki), Nobunaga invaded northern Omi. Nagamasa requested reinforcements from Yoshikage Asakura, who led an army of 15,000 to Omi. Although a direct confrontation with Nobunaga did not occur, a standoff ensued, and the Asai-Asakura alliance was outnumbered and in a dire situation.
In September of the same year, in response to a request from Shogun Yoshiaki Ashikaga, Shingen Takeda advanced from Kai Province.
In October, Miyabe Tsugunari of Miyabe Castle surrendered to Hideyoshi Hashiba through negotiation. Later, taking advantage of Nobunaga's main forces in northern Omi moving to Gifu, an attack was launched on Hashiba's troops at Toragozen Mountain Fort, but it was repelled. Afterwards, Shingen defeated the Oda-Tokugawa allied forces in Mikawa at the Battle of Mikatagahara and advanced to Mikawa.
In December, the Asakura army stationed in northern Omi, led by Yoshikage, returned to Echizen due to fatigue and snow. Shingen, infuriated by Yoshikage's unilateral decision, sent a letter urging him to rejoin the battle (the Ino Document), but Yoshikage ignored it, showing a dismissive attitude.
In July 1573 (the 1st year of Tensho), Nobunaga led an army of 30,000 and again advanced into northern Omi. Nagamasa requested reinforcements from Yoshikage, who arrived with 20,000 troops. However, as Nobunaga's forces captured the castles in northern Omi and defections occurred within the Asai ranks, Yoshikage deemed the situation hopeless and began retreating to Echizen. Nobunaga pursued the retreating Asakura forces and decimated them at the Battle of Tonozuka, then invaded Echizen, leading to the extinction of the Asakura clan. Afterward, he turned his entire army towards the Asai.
The Asai forces were consistently reduced by Nobunaga’s army. Eventually, their stronghold, Odani Castle, was surrounded by Oda's forces. Nobunaga sent Furuwa Mitsuharu (the envoy from the earlier alliance) and later Kinoshita Hideyoshi (Toyotomi Hideyoshi) to propose surrender, but Nagamasa consistently refused, leading to a breakdown in their final negotiation.
On August 27, Hisamasa committed suicide, and on September 1, Nagamasa also committed suicide at the age of 29.
