Ashbourne Shrovetide Football is a traditional and historic game that takes place annually in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England, during Shrovetide, which is the Tuesday and Wednesday before Ash Wednesday. The game is played over two days, and the goals are set three miles apart in the town. The whole town becomes the playing field, and thousands of people participate.
Players, known as "Up'ards" and "Down'ards," aim to score goals by tapping the ball three times against a millstone at their designated goal. The game has very few rules, and the entire town gets involved, with businesses often boarding up their windows and residents taking part in the action.
