With the introduction of Ashok Leyland's new multi-axle 15 Meter bus chassis, will it put an end to the dominance of Volvo models like the 9600s and B11r? Probably not, as they cater to different markets. Ashok Leyland has finally revealed its much-anticipated multi-axle front-engine bus chassis in India.
This new chassis will likely be a popular choice for Indian bus fleet operators, offering increased capacity with 42 sleeper berths and 60 pushback seats. It's a great option for operators who don't want to invest in a high-end Volvo 9600s, which costs around ₹2.5 crore. The 15-meter chassis from Ashok Leyland fills a gap in the market, and now we might see other brands like Tata, BharatBenz, and VECV (Eicher) competing in this space. As bus lengths have grown from 12 meters to 13.5 meters, the next step will likely be 15 meters for major routes, with similar profitability for both 13.5m and 15m buses.
The Ashok Leyland 15-meter chassis is expected to be priced at around ₹50 lakh+, with fuel efficiency from its 4-cylinder A-series engine estimated at around 3.5 km per liter. New bus body-building rules will ensure these buses are designed as luxury premium coaches in India.
