Do you know who was the first Indian woman to be awarded a Doctorate of Science? Who was the first woman to be elected as the General President of the Indian Science Congress? And the woman scientist who paved the way for other females willing to contribute to the field of STEM? If your guess was Dr. Asima Chatterjee, the doyenne of organic chemistry, you were right.
At a time when few females were even allowed to get an education, Asima Chatterjee went on to win several prestigious awards as the CV Raman Award, the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award and was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan as well.
Asima Chatterjee's research contributed to drugs that treated epilepsy and malaria. Her work even resulted in anti-convulsive, anti-malarial and chemotherapy drugs that are used till date.
Having authored more than 400 papers on medicinal plants in the Indian subcontinent, Asima Chatterjee even got nominated as the member of the Rajya Sabha.
She worked under notable instructors like Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy, father of chemical science in India, and Professor Satyendra Nath Bose, the world-renowned physicist known for his works in quantum mechanics.
To celebrate her 100th birthday, Google honoured Asima Chatterjee with a doodle. It is one of the few feathers in the hat of Chatterjee who went by the quote, "I wish to work as long as I live..."
