Others have suggested this: follow the exact opposite of what mainstream doctrines preach, so to arrive at the heart of the maze, in order to exit it altogether. The fact of the matter is BOTH high carb and low carb diets work (low fat is better in my opinion) If a diabetic wants to eat high fat than he/she MUST eat low sugar and the blood sugar issue will be controlled. The fat in their diet doesn't allow the sugars to enter the cells so if they continue to eat fat then NO sugar is allowed. This diet works (not very well in my opinion because just 1 high carb meal will SHOOT blood sugar up rapidly!!! and the fats slow blood flow in the body) The opposite is also true when going low fat. When the blood is thin and fat free the digested sugars easily enter the bodies cells and the blood will clear of sugar rapidly! Don't be confused BECAUSE BOTH diets can work. Low fat is preferred. All the longest living areas of the world (blue zones) are low fat.

Just stumbled upon your channel tonight but I've been following Robbie for a while. I'm a type 1 diabetic, and a vegan since August. When I was diagnosed about a year ago I was vegetarian, and I remember my endocrinologist(diabetes doctor) trying to persuade me to eat meat since it's protein and a "free food"(aka no carbs), and he even tried to tell me to stop eating bananas because they're high in carbs. I did my research, ignored his pushy low-carb advice, became vegan and got a new doc. My latest A1C was 5.7, and my doctors can't believe it. So thank you for bringing Robbie on your channel and spreading some truth. It saddens me how many diabetics out there are terrified of carbs because that's what they've always been taught. One thing: I really wish you guys would've thrown out a kind of disclaimer between type 1 and 2. It's the perfect opportunity to educate about the differences, especially in causes. Maybe you could update the video description and specify that you're talking about type 2? My diabetes was not caused by cellular fat, and I spend nearly every day trying to explain that to people, but because my immune system attacked my body's insulin-producing cells. You seem very thoughtful so I figured I'd ask, especially since us type 1's are constantly being confused for type 2 and lumped into the "diabetes" whole, when we're more like cousins. But anyhow, cheers, you've gained another subscriber :)

intramyocellular lipids can and do come from high carbohydrate diets too. In fact carbohydrates are the only macronutrient strongly correlated with blood triglycerides. Just because you eat fat, doesn't mean it must become fat in your body, hence the positive effects of a ketogenic diet (be it vegan or non-vegan)
@80slimshadys
5 жыл бұрын
@@halo27300 As long as you eat enough carbs once a day fat is turned into fat. Fat is only burned for energy after 16-18 hours after your glycogen stores are empty from not eating carbs, once your body is starving for food that is when it burns fat. The whole point of a ketogenic diet is to starve your body of glycogen so it is essentially continuously in a state of starvation and burns fat for energy, it's a good way to lose weight fast but long term you are looking at heart disease and cancer.

I have been a type one diabetic since I was two years old. I'm 22 years old, and have been following a vegan diet for the past three months. The change I have seen in my blood sugar levels is amazing. In a typical day, my blood sugar ranges from 80 to about 120. Normal. Also, I have gotten to the point where I can eat carbohydrates from fruit without needing insulin. This doesn't hold true all the time, because I do have type one diabetes. However, it happens much more often than not. I take about 3 to 5 units of insulin per meal, when I used to take between seven and 10. I am a little person in general. I am 4'9" tall and weigh about 100 pounds. Last time I went to the doctor, my A-1 C was 8.9. This was about 5 to 6 months ago. I have another appointment coming up in April, and I'm really excited to see how different my A1 C is. I have a feeling that it's going to be much, much better. Veganism has been such a positive thing for me. When I find out what my A1 C is now, after being vegan for three months, I will let everyone know. I'm just happy that I have been able to make this change. I will never eat animal products again.

I feel like I don't want full blown diabetes but I feel like I already have it. It sucks. I used to be a bodybuilder and I miss it. So I've started walking again. Lots of good info here but one critical mistake when you say, "it's not the carbs that led to the fat in the cells causing diabetes" (insulin resistance). There is no way to know that. Carbs can indeed be stored as fat. If a person overeats on carbs and fats, they will store the excess energy as fat, whether it comes from carbs or fat. There is a false dichotomy established here and some narrow thinking, i.e. "carbs are great, fat is bad". It's oversimplifying a complex nutritional world. A macronutrient cannot be bad, and it must be about which foods specifically and the quantity that they are eaten in that matters. The people who have been demonizing carbs have been wrong all along, but this in no way gives us a reason to demonize fat in return.

Everyone needs to do what's right for their body and stop demonizing what they don't like. I heard them say that fat stores causes insulting resistance/diabetes and almost clicked off the video. How did the fat get there? Saying "you eat fat, and so you store fat," is grossly represented as fact here.
@tranquil87

You are wrong and you should not tell people with diabetes to eat high carb. Also you are not a doctor and you still take insulin . If you are a diabetic and you eat sugar or carbs it will increase your blood glucose. Worse carbs turn into fat in your liver. That lock and key scenario that is use about fat is wrong . I am a biochemist there is no lock and key. It's a fatty liver that is the issue and fat in the pancreas. Not in our cells all over the body if that was the case diabetics would be thin and malnourished. You take insulin even in small amounts it is harmful you have nothing under control . Go on a low carb diet and fast if you are type 2 . Say bye to all carbs until you can lose the fatty liver and fatty pancreas.. fast 72 hours 1 a week for 2 months and u will be cured . Bariatric patients can not eat . The calories are nothing what happens they are cured in a matter of weeks. Yes plant based is the way to go but not now . Not until you lose the weight and get rid of fatty liver and your beta cells will come back alive. Do not eat high carb low fat diet ... you are not healthy enough especially if you are still taken insulin. If you are type one well not sure.. because you need insulin to live ... but the goal here is no more insulin which is worse then elevated glucose ....

Four years ago after watching Forks Over Knives, I switched to a low fat high carb vegan diet. Within a couple of weeks, my daily insulin usage dropped to almost half, even though I was eating more carbohydrates. That reduced insulin requirement has continued for four years, and I've lost around 50 pounds. Another thing that happened within a few weeks was my angina I'd had for over a decade disappeared, and it hasn't returned.

Hi Ryan, want to say firstly been watching HHV for years and normally love what you and Anji do, chilled and rational! Secondly, I believe that what you are trying to convey is done with good intentions, however I think it is important to define the types and differences between T1 Diabetes Mellitus and T2DM. T1DM is the inability of the beta cells of the pancreas to produce insulin (the key which unlocks the door to allow glucose into the cells to be used for energy). This can be due to genetic factors and or other various aetiologies (causes) and the patient needs to supply insulin via injections to allow the uptake and metabolism of glucose to occur. This can not be 'reversed' and T1 diabetics will always need to supply the body with exogenous (out of the body) insulin. T2DM also has multifactorial aetiologies but can be 'reversed' or managed through changes in diet and lifestyle, (agreed) in certain cases, but not all! There maybe 'insulin resistance' (the key cannot unlock the door) and because of this the body thinks there is no glucose (there is, it's just not getting through the door into cells) and the body proceeds to compensate by releasing hormones, that release the body's stored version of glucose (glycogen) into circulation, therefore increasing the blood concentration of glucose again whilst still being unable to be metabolised. Furthermore, people seem to simplify the diseases and unless you are a trained medical professional or RD you should not be dishing out advice on medical issues such as DM. It's inappropriate and unethical! These are often debilitating, complex conditions and if they are not managed correctly can cause life-threathening, coma inducing episodes of either hypo/hyperglycaemia, if not worse. You are incorrect Ryan, in saying that "fat is the cause of diabetes" that is simply not true, and is a misleading statement. It's the sufficient insulin production or inability of insulin to bind to the cell to allow the glucose in that are the issues. The reason for the inability of insulin to bind is because lipid is being stored in cells that don't normally store lipid (such as skeletal muscle cells (myocytes) and liver cells(hepatocytes))and inducing inflammatory signals which impair the action of insulin on these cells. Dysfunction in fat storage cells (adipocytes) also contribute to this inflammation which adds to a cascade of dysfunction. The mechanism is complex and not as simplified as you make out. The research is ongoing. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4701542/ Furthermore, Mindful is incorrect in saying insulin resistance is the 'cause' of T2DM etc again, not true. The causes can be genetics, environmental factors, being overweight, taking certain medication etc. the resistance is a 'sign' of T2DM not the cause. Being obese is a risk factor but not the cause. Correlation is not causation. Just because something is associated doesn't mean it caused it, the strength of the evidence, the number of people in the study and the methodology of the study contribute to the reliability of the evidence. But observational epidemiological studies don't prove causation. Many people are misconstruing results from studies either on purpose to meet their agendas or because they're ignorant in to how to interpret statistics, discern between the hierarchy of evidence. It is fantastic that mindful diabetic is managing his condition of T1DM so well through a plant based diet and I commend those who decide to take responsibility for the management of their health through means of a healthy diet and lifestyle. However, he needs to distinguish, be specific and 'mindful' when he talks about diabetes management in the public domain. I'm all for the plant based lifestyle and I applaud the work of Bernard et al. But you can bet that when people visit their clinics, it is a very well planned, specifically tailored, and calculated programme for each individual patient, prescribed to meet their nutritional needs appropriately whilst reversing and managing their diabetes, not just off the cuff, "just eat plant based and reduce your fat". Sorry for the long and winding comment but I just felt compelled to speak out about this. This is not an attack on anybody, vegan or otherwise. Best wishes,

My fiancé has had type 1 diabetes since he was three years old. He used to eat horribly. His diet consisted of Doritos, Pizza rolls, store bought pastries, steak and caramel sauce. I never saw him eat a vegetable, piece of fruit, or whole grains. His A1C got up to 8.7. (Avg. blood sugar of 200). I had been trying to persuade him to eat healthier for our entire relationship but at that point I told him that he needed to either eat healthier or be vegan or else I would leave him. I couldn't live with someone who was deliberately killing and poisoning himself and I wasn't going to stick around for when he went blind or had his foot amputated. I also showed him Forks Over Knives. He switched to being vegan and his A1C after only 6 months and me cooking for him is now 6.6. I'm extremely proud of him. The vegan diet is truly amazing.

First off there is a BIG difference between Type 1 diabetes which our son was BORN with and Type 2 diabetes. He was begun on insulin at age six months. So if someone has a child with diabetes its a lot more complex than having an older child/teen with Type 1. And unlike Type 2 one can never become non diabetic with any lifestyle change!

Was your son exposed to dairy or formula at any point before 6 months of age? Genetic predispositions to type 1 diabetes can make infants have an autoimmune response to products produced by incomplete digestion of cow milk. Really interesting research in this field that mainstream media hasn't caught onto yet, actually. That's not to say your son specifically has type 1 diabetes through this mechanism, I'm just sharing the info.

Ive been eating a high carb vegan diet for many years and my blood sugars are high. Im considering temporarily trying a high fat low carb vegan diet to lose weight. My reasoning is that eating fat keeps me satiated longer so I can go with less calories as I currently have a sedentary job and lifestyle. I feel better with low fat, but I get sickening hungry every 4 hrs when my body starts to kick over to fat burning. I think with eating fats, there should be no painful transition between fuel sources.

cruciferousvegetable It's totally your choice (obviously) but I would think a calorically sufficient diet, high in whole, plant foods + gentle, regular exercise would be a far healthier way to achieve or maintain a healthy weight than low carb, high fat, calorie restriction. Of course, I don't know anything about you or your circumstances so I don't want to assume, but being sedentary is so so bad for you (this is coming from someone with chronic fatigue who really struggles to exercise). Lily over at Legit Nutrition Hawaii has a weight loss playlist (which is helpful for everyone) who goes into some depth about diet and appetite and the factors that influence your hunger etc.

Hannah Elisabeth My diet is based on beans rice, veggies and fruit with no liquid calories and about 70-15-15 macros long term. I probably eat 3500 cal a day. Unfortunately I have been sedentary, so I am a 300+lb whole food vegan with high blood sugar. When I lift, my sugars go right down, but the gym is not close enough given my schedule. I need to work it in, but in the mean time I need to do something. I much prefer my current diet, but exercise is absolutely required.
@Hannah-wh3vo

Ah gotcha. Sounds like we eat the same kind of way! With exercise, I find if I set my expectations too high (go to the gym, 5k run, 20k cycle, etc) there are too many psychic (and practical) obstacles in place. My PT brother got me a big old kettlebell for my birthday and I picked up a stationary trainer for my bike, and now I aim for just 15 minutes of activity a day. It's not a lot but sometimes it's all I can manage, and sometimes I can double or treble the time. It does help, even though it doesn't seem like much compared to the kind of exercise I used to do (long distance running. Disaster for my knees!) Perhaps you could try cutting intensity/duration/expectation but increasing frequency? Good luck with it all :) And get moving!

I'm type 1 plant based vegan...high blood sugar again!! My blood work said my c-peptide is whacked out. I take both insulins...only once yesterday but ate nothing again last night and woke up to a 400 reading! This does not happen every night...the only thing different was my stress level changed. I'm confused, really confused. I was diagnosed in 2006. I use coconut oil for body lotion and small amounts of olive oil in salads. I buy peanuts and make peanut butter with 1 T olive oil to 2 cups of peanuts. I don't think I'm high fat. I've been a lacto avo vegetarian since 1980 then got diabetes in 06, then became vegan in 2014, and now raw vegan 2018. In 2005 my doctor gave me Lipitor for cholesterol but o quit within a year a got diabetes as a vegetarian, dairy use. What gave this skinny girl diabetes? I'm even doing intermittent fasting every day! I'm fine during the day but overnight is so questionable.

A diet high in animal fats seems to fly in the face of what Robby and Ryan are discussing regarding intramyocellular lipid build up as being the cause of insulin resistance. Though I agree with you, it would be interesting to know whether vegan keto is as effective as hclf is in reversing diabetes.
