Will Prowse is the best resource I have ever seen when it comes to discussing Solar Technology, the quality of videos, the material he covers, the amount of detail is amazing, and how he delivers the message is on another level above anything out there. Will is very contagious, and very enjoyable to watch and learn from. Keep shooting videos, even if you think it is redundant. I'd love to see some short videos on the "mechanical" aspects of a solar power system. Such as how you mounted your panels, fabricating parts like bus bars, arrangement of components and wiring, how to pass wires through walls, etc. Especially tips on using easily available (hardware store) materials in place of "solar specific" parts. (Solar suppliers aren't nearly as plentiful here in the eastern US as they are out west.) Thanks for your great videos and supporting info on your web pages!

I have started with your beginner videos and because I have a bit of a reading disability i found the videos very help full. This say I also found it a bit difficult keeping up with all the jargon and abbreviation and it would be really help full if you do a bigginer video explaining all the abbreviation like BMS, MPPT ect. Love your work dude. Best I have ever come across on KZitem. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your content. I never find it boring and always giggle when you get so excited.

I have a suggestion for you. Now that solar and lithium are becoming more common on RV’s I’d love it if you did a start to finish build your own RV lithium battery bank for Motorhomes. It would be great if you could do the project with scalability in mind. You’ve done plenty dealing with components, what’s needed is a start to finish with specific components your viewers can get. Include case, cells, BMS, etc. I know several RV friends have told me they would love to build their own but don’t feel confident they can pull all of the pieces together without guidance. Thanks!

@@caliguyrocks if you have a monthly membership the book is free to read OR less than $10 otherwise if you have a device to download it to. IT SOUNDS THOUGH LIKE YOU WOULD BE GLAD TO PAY $10 FOR HIM TO READ IT ALOUD AND MAYBE HE DOES NEED TO DO AN AUDIOBOOK OF HIS RV BOOK? I MEAN AUDIO TOUR OF HIS BOOK SO YOU CAN JUST FLIP BETWEEN THE PAGES FOR THE PICTURES AND NOT HAVE TO READ THE WRITING BUT LISTEN TO HIM WALK YOU THROUGH IT? In terms of the ability to get him to do it I don't think it's a bunch of people chiming in regardless if it goes beyond 3 to 300 or so I think you have to monetize something like that. An example is this procrastination lesson a videos. I discovered it after watching a masking video from last March a few days ago. That masking video has the Ukrainian lady speaking with a heavy accent perfect English otherwise and really it's extraordinary. The teacher in the paid rather expensive it's dozens of dollars to get access to the lessons which is so much more than the book it's s somewhat hilarious to me. I'm definitely not shilling I haven't mentioned the website and the website doesn't mention that most of the lessons are in fact free on KZitem on a different channel LOL. I have so many lessons queued up I don't know whether it's 3/4 or more of what you would pay so much to get access to. I understand why however they recognize that some people just want to pay a large amount of money and have the videos to bingebut I do think given the potentially wide audience they have made a mistake there. I further assume that the claim that it is up to date with the latest science is not actually true. As much as we want individuals to be our public broadcasting system it is simply too much to ask. For me this is a moment actually because I have not had any pleasure to see PBS having a subscription model. I still don't necessarily because they do have Monopoly on the public airwaves. That historically has been sufficient and the day that we are supposed to stop public free wireless broadcasting of TV has passed many times I don't see any need for it to ever be realized. I do see a need for PBS to perhaps buy additional bandwidth so they can broadcast an 8K and not just multicast. It's amazing the Vans and the six-figure prices that are routine. Most of them are diesel of course. But traveling in small daily circles has nothing to do with Van life. A genuinely electric van can bask in the Sun for weeks storing the energy to be used to travel in a relatively straight line before basking again for weeks. That requires breakthroughs in energy storage. 8 ft is not much but it is much more given the exponential gain of increasing the radius of a flywheel then commodity fly Wells currently get marketed at. I think that standard vehicle with flywheels are far less expensive than any chemical energy storage. I also think that Vans have sufficient space for sufficient liquid nitrogen that is renewably obtained. There is tremendous beauty in people moving into fans selling expensive houses houses that might have hundreds of thousands of dollars and sometimes millions of dollars of equity. I think that's the discussion I want to see. If you increase the range sufficiently very inexpensive liquid nitrogen to get you anywhere in the country is possible as your fuel. the people who are willing to spend this money to set an example can pay it forward. But make no mistake when you consider the balance of system costs nobody should just assume that they are more expensive than buying a $5,000 hydrogen vehicle and yes the hydrogen cars are now being sold used for four figures. Removing the hydrogen to electricity system from one of those cars and putting it in the van requires only that there be a database of people who are instead of giving their extra electricity from their solar panels to the grid for two little revenue storing it for the van life people to come and get in the form of hydrogen of course. I don't believe in hydrogen fuel cells however I believe in liquid nitrogen and I have not adequately considered the demand that the potential van life crowd represents. I will be taking care of that soon hopefully. I believe the proper use of liquid nitrogen is to distribute energy internationally from mantle heat mines. It might only be one place on the planet that we mine for the heat that is in the mantle and that place might be at the bottom of the ocean making the mind only a few miles deep that is to say a very conventional deep water well. Except you don't dump the steam you extract the heat deliberately and you use it to remove the heat from the atmosphere. Atmosphere without heat is 80% approximately liquid nitrogen. The rest of it can also go on the Vans to help people breathe when they pass through cities because it is pure oxygen. There are worse things than having pure liquid oxygen as a byproduct LOL. Unbelievably if you want to know why liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen are not sold like propane at every Walmart etc the answer is very simple but nobody will believe it of course. It is trivial to verify it however. We don't have any market, and I mean none whatsoever. For heat even. The closest thing to the market for heat is the price adjustment formula on the purchase of liquefied methane. Not all the liquids have the same energy content so there is an adjuster mechanism for the BTU per liter or kilogram. But for energy itself there is no market not even for heat. So the price of Tay say 2 gallons for a dollar which is a good estimate of what it is historically been for liquid nitrogen and if you don't think that's a bargain then you don't know how much a two gallons is and how little a dollar is and you don't know that I mean delivered. That's the delivered price to your business about 50 cents for 128 oz of water's volume. People pay a dollar 28 for 28 oz of water. although the weight of water is not the same as liquid nitrogen the energy of liquid nitrogen is comparable to that of the finest lithium ion battery and I'm saying that's an understatement because it is. Now liquid nitrogen does not pollute a global warming gas like dry ice does. And the primary use for electricity on a diesel van is of course as an alternative to dry ice. I submit what you want is not more electricity but more of a market for energy. That's what you need that's what we need that's what our Extinction requires to prevent.

I just burned up three series 29 RV batteries because one of the cables snapped at it wasn't noticable until my inverter wouldn't run high wattage equipment like a vacuum cleaner but would run a 120 volt fan. One battery was connected to the inverter had no charge and the other three, two had 12.4 and one 12.6 but it is five years old and probably has not much reserve capacity but just use what I need to do during daylight hours.

Personally I would say more advanced videos because of the reasons you listed as well as there are smaller details that are sometimes hard to find unless learning in depth from someone that has years and years of experience such as yourself. About the mini split, maybe testing the carrier 42 SEER because if it’s extreme efficiency and the implications. also one thing I saw from another channel and have experimented with myself is a water chiller or heat pump water heater from a window unit or mini split. Obviously cheaper to chop up a window unit. But then it can be used to either make chilled, heater water for showers for much less energy than resistive heaters, or what I use it for - a compressor driven ice cream maker 😛 Our plan for the our full time Rv is to get the extremely high seer mini split to use with one of the split phase capable growatt inverter/chargers and probably rich solar panels on top and the fortune cells to make the battery, all thanks to you and your extremely informative videos!

The thing that I don't understand is 'With the advances over the past 10 yrs in battery and solar panel tech, why are people not offered the option of low voltage solar powered lighting upgrades for their homes?' Granted unless you have an inverter and enough battery storage you wouldn't be able to run everything in your home, but a 100 Ah battery can light up a regular home for days (nights that is). Charging from a solar panel during the day and/or standard battery charger as a backup when the SUN don't shine means no-one would ever have to look for a torch or light a candle again during a power outage.

Very wise, but you must realize that builders cannot make a profit on doing such as this nor will it really render a home more 'saleable' to the average buyer. And it's another liability the builder/seller has to assume for the period of time local laws require (in 2 of the 6 Code-requirement areas I work in that's 13 years time as it's part of the Electrical system). Laws need to be changed to let these good things happen before they can happen.

Hey, Will! This might be a totally new direction for you and maybe require several videos... It occurs to me that there’s a lot of energy that’s WASTED by storing DC then using it to power an inverter to create AC (not 100% efficient so power is lost/wasted) then plugging in an AC-to-DC power supply (again, not 100% efficient so more power is lost) to run things like smartphone chargers, laptop chargers... basically anything that has a “wall wart/brick” power supply that converts AC to DC. Then there’s things that don’t use those types of power supplies that still run off DC - but use an internal AC-to-DC power supply - desktop computers/monitors, cordless tool battery chargers, basically any electronics including TVs and audio systems. Lastly there’s things that commonly run on AC but COULD run on DC (as an example, you could replace the compressor in your fridge with a 12VDC compressor). Obviously, it won’t always be cost-effective. I doubt anyone is going to rip the power supply out of their TV to replace it with a DC-to-DC supply (which will obviously have its own efficiency issues). And depending on the cost of a 12VDV refrigerator compressor it may simply not be cost-effective. Then there’s the issue of power lost running DC voltages over distances... ALL of this would make for interesting, informative content. One thing we know about solar power systems is that they ARE cost effective. Ultimately, they pay for themselves and then some. Perhaps if efficiency and losses due to DC-to-AC-to-DC power conversions were minimized, we could all spend less on panels and batteries...?
@donny_bahama

If you think about all the things you have that use a micro-USB or USB-C power connector (there’s more and more of them coming out all the time), they are ALL running on 5VDC - maybe it makes sense to have a 5V battery bank that’s supplied by the charge controller. That 5V battery bank could then feed a big panel of USB jacks. Likewise, for all the 12VDC powered stuff out there, what about a separate battery bank feeding an array of 12VDC “cigarette lighter” sockets?

Hi Will! Definitely continue to do beginners videos. You are always expecting new people, right? Do them every month or so, so a new scroller will find one. You should even have an intro video that you attach to every video you make. Then, every single video, you should start the same: your welcome, your name, what you do, and something like: “!if you’re new to my channel, I have an intro video attached below. Less than 5 minutes, I made it for new people just like yourself so you know everything there is for you here.” Them go right into your video. Make your intro video, that quickly speaks to your history and experience, and how much fun you have doing this. Mention what you have for sale. I appreciate you so much from all your rv videos. Then especially your health book helped my foot so much. I love the social media boundaries you’ve set! One more thought for you: hire a VA to manage your email. Best wishes to you!! Great Job, Will! We just purchased one of the Delta Battery generators you have reviewed in previous videos as an enhancement to our "Grid Down" prepping. We were finally able to afford one when HSN sold them recently on "5 flex pay". Based on our conversation with Customer Service, we were told that we could set this unit up as a UPS for our modem and router equipment. As my wife is teaching classes via zoom from home, this keeps her classes from being interrupted due to a power failure. This also appears to be a convenient way to keep the Delta charged since it is plugged into a household receptacle constantly. The thing is, the unit's fans run constantly. Not a big deal since they are relatively quiet, but we were wondering if you agree that it is ok to keep the Delta set up in this configuration.

Most people just won't read books, but they will watch short videos. Concise and up to date goes a long way, if you make it funny it's even better (Electroboom for instance). Please think about it. It would reduce the number of repetitive questions you get. It would educate the population. And it would significantly boost your business in the long run. I agree that the all-ac path is easy, but certain loads, in my opinion, are much more efficient running at low voltage DC, such as fans, lights, refrigeration. Of course there is the voltage trap, you want the higher voltage DC system, but you still need to run lower voltage DC loads, so my current thinking is a 24 volt DC system, since 24 volt reefers, lights, pumps and fans are easy to source. Obviously, if you just buy a pre-built house, all AC is simple and practical. For mobile systems with limited panel space, efficiency becomes more critical.

Bikepacking! What is the best solar setup? Needs to be small, lightweight, w enough storage to recharge phone, GPS, flashlight, GoPro, etc. Small stuff. Needs to recharge during one day, when part of the day is riding under the canopy. Somewhat waterproofed

Is it possible to open a solar panel and reroute the internal connections to a 12V or 24V configuration? This way it should be easier to use a cheaper 12V/24V solar controller instead of the expensive Higher voltage controllers.

While this video is from last year, I personally think that you should produce a “beginner” video once every year, or possibly two. That would keep the videos more up to date on equipment. Its easier for beginners to keep up when the same equipment is being used. While the difference may be minimal, it helps add confidence to the beginner. The mini-split is a good deal also. Ive been looking for specific info on this as well. I have a portion of the house that is being converted to solar, so ideally I would like that section to on an independent ductless system.

For a wind generation the wing type blades are wrong for strong winds. A spiral type blade where the stresses and vibrations are not out on the extended blades that work like wings as they are using in most types wind generators today.

I fell asleep during your livestream but I hope you see this: I want to find the smallest effective AC for cooling a van on solar, even if it means taking something apart for DIY-ing. For example, dissembling a DC freezer, putting the compressor under the van and blowing a small fan across the cooling coils. People are using window ACs, but you have to cut a hole in the back door or remove a window. People in buses are using mini-splits, but I don't think that there's one low-power enough for a van solar setup. I'd love to compare cooling systems to find one best for a van setup. Oh, and it has to be under $500. The Cruise-N-Comfort may be sized right, but it's $5000. Oh, and it can't be a swamp cooler that creates humidity in the van.

Just wondering : How do you measure 80% and 30% from a 12V battery ? let's say from a AGM VRLA lead accid 12V ? I mean , what Voltage is to be considered a 100% and what voltage to be considered 30% ? , thanks! , also thanks for sharing your videos, very useful!

Will... could you please show a setup for a regular 4WD with 12v dual batteries? One lead acid cranking battery. One auxiliary lithium. Both recharged from the vehicle alternator and solar. I was keen to use Victron but don't think it can be done. Might have to get a DCDC charger from someone like Redarc.

you're always talking about lifePo4 batteries, but for those of us still on lead acid, can you go over equalizing flooded lead acid, how to test, and can you add various ah sizes and so on to build a battery bank that won't blow up. i go through your videos but i haven't found anything that integrates the solar aspect of energy creation, and how that integrates with the existing 120v disconnect and inverter/ charger found in older travel trailers.

Good morning Will. I missed your livestream. :( I have a question: What are your thoughts on the YMGI Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioner 1 Ton 12000 BTU Solar Assist Ductless with Heat Pump and Solar Panel ? I'm in an RV, have cats, and I work, so I must leave them during the day. Do you think this would be a dependable AC/heat source? I'd appreciate your thoughts. Hope you've been well, -PJ

Hi, Just go with what you want to do. For beginners, they will catch up with your old videos. Just refer to them in your comments. I was wondering if you could do some work with ROV Systems. The particular use case here is that in most cases the challenge is getting power down to the ROV thrusters over a long thrusters. The second challenge that ROV's are out in the field. Therefore how do you source the power and manage it properly in a remote location?

I'm learning a lot watching you. I live in a older Co-op community and we cannot afford 500k to redo our underground site lighting. We have carports we need to power with solar. I'd love to see a video on how to design a 12v LED lighting system that would last +/- 48 hours. 5-8 12 v lights per carport. How big of panels? Batteries? Etc? You are doing everyone a service with your knowledge. Much thanks!

I'm building a portable solar suitcase. I have 2 HQST 100 watt mono panels going back to a 30 amp MTTP Epever controller. My question concerns the cable that will go from the panels to the controller. I'm thinking of using 50 feet of copper 16 AWG 4 conductor SOOW cable run with parallel conductors. Paralleling the conductors you get a equivalent of about between a 12 and 14. I think this is a better solution than the extension cords I usually see used. I'm interested in knowing what you think about this before I buy anything.

For my camper van I would like to make a possibility to adjust priority of equipment depending on the SOC of the battery. So between 100 and 80% the boiler can get power but below that value the other stuff still does. Then between 80 and 40 % the fridge and radio can do their thing. (for instance) and then from 40% and below the water pump and lights keep working. So I'd need some relais that will be operated by an Arduino and a voltage meter that somehow fits in. Then there would be a script to make it work. I think a lot of 'modern' makers/campers would benefit from such a system as there are more and more applications in these vans but (solar/battery-) power is limited.
