Great information! I'll be switching to a Halogen for my Leopard gecko 👍

Glad to hear it! If your leopard gecko is housed in a 40 gallon terrarium, a 50w PAR30 halogen (such as the Arcadia Halogen or Zoo Med ReptiTuff) should do the job. Personally I prefer to use two bulbs in a Zoo Med Mini Combo Dome lamp for a larger basking area with the smaller bulbs, but that's up to you.

You are very good at explaining all of the many things a person, especially someone new to reptiles, would need to know. I wish I had access to you years ago when I was breeding my longcoat German Shepherds. Neonates puppies must also have an outside heat source. I used to have a litter whelped (born) in the spring and one in the winter. Both times of the year, the weather is unpredictable where I live. To add to that, mom's almost always whelp during a storm for some reason. ⚡️❄️ It is important to keep the surrounding air temp during the first week of a litter around 95° but no lower than 90° Fahrenheit. Each week, you drop the temp by 5° until they are around 4 -5 weeks old. Subjecting your litter to lower temps during these first weeks of life causes a weakened ammuine system. Typical setups in a whelping pen or area are to use a special waterproof heating pad placed under your whelping pads or blankets set at the required temperature. This allows the pups to move away from the heat source if they get too warm. It is usually placed near where mom would lay to nurse but not so close that mom gets overheated. Then, we need to think about the air temp. This is where we run into problems. Most often, heat lamps for chickens are used. During the first week, mom likes her whelping area quiet and dim. The white chicken heat lamp is very bright, and I have been told the red one is dangerous. I tried it once, was in the pen changing blankets, and couldn't believe how hot it was, so I removed it asap. What I did for my whelping area was to hang brackets from the ceiling and put light weight curtain rods and curtains. Some people used round swimming pools with an xpen around it. My husband made me a rectangular wooden box with a door. This gives mom a place to go and more room for the pups later as they grow. Anyway, the curtains help regulate the temp, so I didn't have large temperature fluctuations from doors opening. It also gave mom privacy and darkened the whelping pen. Basically, it was like a reptile enclosure! BUT.... the chicken style heat lamp was SO BRIGHT!!!!!! The concept of using a heat lamp vs. a portable heater is to allow the pups to move into or away from the heat source. I know people that had a litter, then went to the store or to work, and their german shepherd mom's have killed pups accidentally while trying to move them to a darker area. 😮 I tell newer breeders to think of wild animals, a bear, a wolf, and even your dog the day before or the day of....will find a den. A place that is dark, cave like. Having your litter in the open makes them feel vulnerable, and the bright light, for some reason, agitate mom. I am no longer breeding but am a trainer and handler with 48 yrs of experience and an advisor for several FB groups. I advise people who have breeding, training, and dog questions in general, so listening to this was VERY helpful for both my desire to have a reptile someday and options for alternative heat sources for pups. I will research what you talked about to see what would work in the application for keeping new puppies toasty. If you think of something off the top of your head, put it down for me. I would be glad to send people your way. Thank you so much for some great information. 🐾🐍 🐾

Interesting! I did not know that about dog breeding. You may want to look into radiant heat panels (ProHeat has an excellent reputation and very helpful customer service). Since you're heating a den-like area, Infared A and B aren't going to be as important as ambient heat (Infrared C). Radiant heat panels tend to excel at heating larger spaces while producing no light at all.

@@ReptiFiles thank you. Sorry about the very long explanation. I didn't know how else to properly explain the importance and the why's. You have been so valuable. I never would have thought to ask someone in the reptile community. Again....Thank you so much. 🐾❤️🐾
