Dana came to Orlando in 1990 for the grand opening of Universal Studios. I noticed him and went up to him. The guys with him started to laugh because I knew who he was. He was great. Promised me some TV-38 items and sure enough they arrived in the mail about 4 weeks later

I grew up in Mass watching the Red Sox and Bruins on TV38. Back in Durfee High School (Fall River, MA), I wrote to Leo White, who did the stats for the Bruins and Red Sox for TV38, and ask him became a statistician. He sent me a letter back with media guides and also invited me to a game. But it turned out it was a Bruins-Flames game instead. For an independent station, they had first class talent.

I was well into my engineering career at TV-38 when this show was taped. Here are a few points of interest: Control B, where technician Jim Dewitt talks about technicians being "life's blood" has a great history. Pope John Paul II's Boston Mass, Spanish translation, was broadcast through that control room. Comedians Lenny Clarke, Steve Sweeney and Steve Wright got early TV exposure in Studio B as did WBCN's Charles Laquidera. Audio engineer Marilyn was a pioneer, breaking into a mostly male field of broadcast engineering. The analog equipment of that day was expensive, elegant and at the peak of scientific development; it also required great skill to manipulate. Here's a list of the videotape equipment at TV-38 at that time: Ampex VPR-2 and VPR-2B (2B had reverse slo-mo), Sony BVU-800 and 820, RCA TR-70, TR-60, TR-4, and finally The famous RCA TCR-100 cart machine. This video shows a glimmer of TV-38 at its peak as an independent UHF station. Our professional sports production rivaled the networks, but that's another story.

Thanks Joe for your detailed history of TV-38 back in its glory days. Ir was a great independent TV station back then with high standards.

@@carvcom1 what a trip! My father is Jim DeWitt, the technician Dana interviews. Would it be possible to obtain a copy of this? Been trying to find footage of old 38 stuff I remember him in, and I dont think I've ever seen this before. Thank you so much for uploading!

@@UncleDjent Your father was hilarious in the interview with Dana. I will try to find the VCR tape it was on (I have many) and make a copy if possible.
