My Japanese wife and I have been together for almost 40 years. She was the first Japanese exchange student living in a small town in Montana. Her host mother just happened to be my favorite aunt and the first time we met, we stayed up all night just talking together happily. We’ve been married 36 years now and have 3 grown children. We still can’t be separated from each other for very long. It’s a very strong bond we share and for this we are forever thankful. It’s not often one finds a true soulmate. ❤

My introduction to international relations was on a project where we planned to demonstrate the conversion of coal to a liquid fuel usable in automobiles. Japan provided a team and Germany provided a team and the USA provided a team. I had to coordinate the preparation of estimates and budgets. Every company, much less country, has their own accepted standards and rules for putting together estimates. I found the experience VERY interesting and grew to really enjoy working with the Japanese and German team members! No romance but the lessons I learned to navigate the cultural and organizational differences undoubtedly helped me when I developed a contract management class at a NASA center (with employees from all over the earth), and when I married a Filipina 20 years later. At least that is what I reflected back to when listening to your interviews.

Raising an half child in Japan offers better future opportunities and the chance to become fluent in Japanese at a native level. My mixed son receives compliments on his appearance whenever we walk in the streets of Tokyo. Bullying can happen anywhere; being in a mixed-race country doesn't guarantee that Asian children won't face it. And I don't even talk outside school, safety in general in the streets...naaah, unless you have a good income that requires you to live in the west, If for the child only, better stay in Japan.
