Court level view of Aslan Karatsev practicing at the 2022 Australian Open in 4K 60fps!
Here we see Aslan Karatsev practicing his forehands & backhand groundstrokes, serves, volleys and overhead smashes!
Forehand analysis:
Karatsev is an embodiment of the idea that the swing of the arm has less to do with power generation than the body does. Meaning, power comes more from the body than the arm which can seem like a completely counter intuitive idea as many would think they need to swing the arm more to get more power.
Take the forehand at 1:55 in consideration:
In this video you can see that his arm and racket do not over rotate behind his back during the preparation of the forehand, instead they stay on the hitting side (right side) of his body.
He barely moves his arm, instead he prepares by
- loading the outside hip (right hip)
- and coiling the torso to
- have his belly button face the the right, perpendicular to the baseline (90°)
all while his arm only slightly raises from his ready/preparition position.
If you try this at home, you can feel how effortless it is to play tennis this way opposed to using alot of energy by forcefully moving your smaller muscles in the arm back and forwards without the use of the bigger muscles of the torso.
Also notice how Karatsev moves into the shot when he can by letting his right leg pass forwards after the shot to get his bodyweight moving forwards and into the ball.
I say "when he can" because it's not always posible to move into the shot if you are on the back foot playing a defensive shot if your opponent hits a good/deep shot.
Although, it is ideal to move forwards into the shot all the time and something that should be strived for.
You can see at 1:55, Karatsev hits an awkward yet powerful shot becuase he dosen't quite get his footing early enough, but he still generates alot of power by moving into the shot and allowing the right leg to pass forwards after contact with the ball.
The forehand at 1:55 is great to see how little he moves his right arm! It's almost completely still as his body moves around the ball and his body initiates the swing as his arm comes along with it.
Many players get the idea of generating power with your arm by pulling it back and then throwing it forward, where in reality, it's best to generate power from the truck of the body. This way you can use the larger muscles of the body.
Understandibly so, it may seem counter intuitive to abbreviate the backswing like Karatsev to get more power, but in a fast paced sport such as tennis, every millisecond of preparation is crucial to hitting the ball well.
Over-rotating can lead to more errors and less consistancy as more things can go wrong during the time of un-coiling.
