When we attempt to correct behavior, the ones being checked tend to respond more favorably when it ISN'T SOMEONE THEY'RE ALREADY OPPOSED TO ADMONISHING THEM (this isn't to say you shouldn't, of course check shitty behavior). Erosion of that learned behavior comes layers at a time, not all at once. Is it shitty that racism and xenophobia work like this? Yes, fuck yes it is. But that's the sad reality of the situation. When I was watching the conversation between Hasan and Asmon, I did have a strong thought that Has was being so gentle with Asmon, but then I realized the he was doing that more for Asmond's audience's benefit, who seem to need someone who presents an opinion different from their own to be packaged in a very diplomatic way, or else they won't be receptive and immediately stop engaging with what Has is trying to say. It still sucks that people who are entrenched in the propaganda they consume need so much coddling in this day and age in order to merely humanize Arabs and Muslims, though...

I wish I had it in me to be that charitable to people around me who I constantly hear saying the most disgusting, dehumanizing things. Unfortunately, it's essentially my job to be immersed in all news of everything going on over there every day. I wish I could just dispassionately download all that knowledge to them, but (1) I can't because I'm angry, all the time and (2) I've convinced myself that it wouldn't change their minds anyway. I once had enough faith in humanity to believe that with enough handholding, information and reason, people with deeply entrenched bigotry can be persuaded. That faith is now thoroughly exhausted. It's fortunate we have people like Hasan who have that skill of putting their feelings aside to engage in good faith with these people, because I don't have it in me, nor do most people I think.

It’s kind of strange seeing Asmon banned on the platform where Hasan has had some crazy takes himself. I don’t think this is a good precedent. At some point all you have to do is wait. We would exchange dinner dishes weekly and hang out together at the nearby park. I'm still not entirely sure why this happened. I think... on some level we both saw the tragedy of hate that *could* and *should* exist between us according to societies expectations and we... rebelled? Against that notion. One afternoon, an IDF soldier was vacationing on stolen land in the West Bank. To pass the time, he and his wife would join other apartheid settlers in attacking aid trucks on their way to The Gaza Strip so that the people there would starve. As they were driving back from one of these assaults, the off-duty soldier spotted a Palestinian flag stuck in the ground on the side of the road. The determined soldier immediately pulled the car over, marched with purpose up to the flag, and gave it a solid kick, unaware that it was rigged with explosives. His wife looked on as her unfortunate husband disappeared into a cloud of dirt and pink mist. Miraculously, the man survived. While resting in a hospital bed and nursing his wounds, his wife came to visit what was left of him. "My brave soldier!" she cried, "Why did you have to kick that flag? You weren't deployed here.." With regards to Hasans's debate reaching Asmongold's audience, I am recalling something said by everyone's favorite talking skull Shaun in an older video of his. Something along the lines of "you can't convince someone that they are wrong, they have to convince themselves." I'm willing to bet that everyone in Hasan's community who came from a reactionary one didn’t do so immediately after seeing a clip or hearing a profound statement. Rather, they initially reacted like how you would expect. But then, after days, months, even years of pondering about it (likely offline and touching grass), they eventually realized that they were wrong to get mixed up with reactionaries and their rhetoric. In other words, I'm optimistic that Hasan's talk with Asmond has reached more people than one would initially believe, it just takes time.

I am hopeful tbh. I was very VERY anti-religion when I was a teenager and I thought that Islam was the worst evil in the world. I started kindergarten in 2001. Barely a month into my first year of school when 9/11 happened. Growing up in that time in the south was being bombarded by anti-Muslim propaganda. By 18 I could see through a lot of the bs we are fed growing up. Socialism isn’t even. Gay people deserve rights too. But Islam lasted me into my early twenties. People like Hasan where the only way for me to be exposed to accurate information about the region and different cultures in general. I didn’t know any Muslim people. I’ve seen them in “the wild” but I’ve never even genuinely MET a Muslim person to this day. Watching the debate yesterday made me think about how many people there are that are like how I was. Hasan’s ability to speak the way he did with Asmon is vital now more than ever.

He said he wants to travel to these places and actually meet the people he has an opinion about. I'm actually applauding him for that - it takes a lot of self-reflection to ignore your fans and accept criticism and actively create plans to challenge your own beliefs. Found your debated with him to be really relaxed and fact-based - you challenged his exact concerns and probably had a huge impact on the way he thinks. As somebody who doesn't mind proudly displaying what color my skin is, and as somebody with very hot takes about situations far from where I am, I take the time to specify subgroups of subgroups, and I never paint a broad stroke over the entirety of a people, a culture, or a nation in the way Asmongold has. He conflates Terror groups with all Palestinians and Muslims. Epic failure.

But is he wrong? A religion that enables its followers to go bonkers when their prophet is depicted in a newspaper. 20 journalists killed just because they worked there not one of them wrote or made the picture. Such a tolerant religion. How many times has christ been ridiculed in newspapers and how many deaths has it generated? Not that im a follower of either nor any abrahamit religion. Jihad this and that.. if Israel didnt have the defence system it has then all those rockets thats been launched from Hamas,Houti,Hezbollah and Iran would have done the genocide.

Around 89% of Palestinians favored making sharia law the official law of the land. About 80% of Muslims in neighboring country Egypt think stoning a woman to death is a fitting punishment for adultery. 77% of Muslims in neighboring country Egypt are in favor of cutting off hands as punishment for theft. When asked about the death penalty for those who leave the Muslim religion, at least three-quarters of Muslims in Jordan (86%), Egypt (84%) and Pakistan (76%) say they would favor making it the law. This is Pew Research Data - they do their homework. Anybody criticizing not only Islam, but also Muslims in general in that region is well within their moral rights to do so. 😌

One evening, a group of IDF soldiers were bragging about their military expliots. "Last week, I sniped 3 sheep in Khan Younis" boasted one. "During the first raid of Al-Shifa Hospital, I got 7 pregnant women" gloated another. "Amateurs!" declared their commanding officer, the most experienced veteran in the group. "During the Great March of Return, I single-handedly took out the knees of 42 Palestinian civilians!" he said with a laugh. Just then, little red triangles appeared above the soldiers' heads. "What the hell is that?" the officer pondered out loud. As they gawked at the crimson inverted pyramids hovering over them, Resistance Fighters hit their position with a thermobaric rocket and a fragmentation head, leaving little left of the soldiers except for the sordid memories of their misdeeds. And that, my friends, is the story of a group of IDF soldiers who decided to calculate occupation arithmetic, and ended up getting a lesson in resistance geometry.

One night, 3 IDF soldiers held captive in Rafah managed to escape captivity. As they fled, they spotted an IDF platoon nearby. Out of sight from the platoon, the three debated what course of action they should take: "We should wave a white flag and approach them for rescue," said one. "Remember your training," retorted another, "a white flag would only identify us as targets." "What if we disguised ourselves as defenseless women & children?" asked a third. "Even worse, responded the former, "that would get us nixed right away. But I've got an idea!". The soldiers then did their best to appear as resistance fighters, and when they were ready they revealed themselves to the IDF platoon while shouting "Yasin!". The platoon immediately scurried and ran for cover, while the disguised soldiers were able to approach and be rescued. Afterwards, Bibi was presenting the 3 soldiers with Israel's highest military decoration, the Diaper of Valor, when he asked them how they conceived such an ingenious plan. "Well," stated one of the soldiers, "We realized that there was only one thing that would stop the IDF from nixing us." "And what's that?" asked Bibi. The soldier whispered, "Giving them the impression that we would shoot back."
