Used to do this as a teenager in the cold winter on the farm I worked at, the owner - an old lady, also used firewood to heat the stove, she'd make us lunch but I remember even during winter being boiling hot sat at the dinner table, with the fireplace still warming up after a session of chopping wood. Good times I miss. "He who cuts the wood, warms himself twice", and considering the mental health benefits, I'd say three times 😃

You are a bad ass. I’m 68 years old. I logged 57 trees for my sawmill and cut what i couldn’t use in rounds for firewood. I started to split the red an white oak with a maul. I quickly realized I needed a hydraulic spitter. Lol I don’t look like you anymore. Enjoy your youth.

I actually debuted with chopping up dry spruce wood which I bought from a local farmer. It's basically the first time in my life chopping up wood, I must admit the entire process was really satisfying! I developed an interest for it and plan to buy even more next year including a chopping staff and getting a used tire to make the process even more effective!

This is a thing of raw beauty. And so satisfying. Thanks for posting. I have to admit, I wanted so badly to be stacking it and busting down kindling for you while you were working. Brings back so many memories of farm work in the mountains.

One of the best at the job I seen so far! Great technique (years of experience) The little back saving moves, like resting the axe head on the base log; very familiar😉 That impact sound from the ‘momentum’ created by rotating your axe +/-270 degrees instead of the 90 degree rotation most people use. I find the Fiskars X27 (92cm) great for that, because of the wide handle tip that stops the handle from slipping out of your hand. It’s also around 1kg lighter (2300g) with the same impact force as a 3300g axe.

I was looking for something that has sounds of nature, calming “away from the bustle of life” type of thing and stumbled across this video. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. When I listen to the splitting of logs, it takes my mind to a place away from pressure and just peaceful out in the woods calmness. Thanks sir!

Great video, I love this stuff. Good quality! One piece of advice I would have to give is: Switch sides when swinging the axe every now and then, practice both sides. You will last longer and your body will be more balanced. Other than that: Awesome stuff man.

Did not find his poor technique relaxing. Grated on my nerves, overstrike so often. The collar on it shouldn't be taken as permission to punish your haft.
