The song was originally commissioned by Lieutenant Governor of Quebec Théodore Robitaille for the 1880 Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day ceremony; Calixa Lavallée composed the music, after which, words were written by the poet and judge Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. There is a Niagara Falls (city) in both Canada and the US. Subsequently, there is also two separate waterfalls, one associated with Canada and the other the US. The Horseshoe Falls is otherwise known as the "Canadian Falls" and then there is the American Falls. Also, in the 80's and 90's - in my geography classes at least - the north was known only as the Northwest Territories. Your observation of course is correct in that it was largely the entire north of the country, "northwest" was a odd name for it! ;)
