How to Make Money in Fallout 4: A Survivor’s Guide
1. Loot Everything
The most straightforward way to make money in Fallout 4 is by looting everything you come across. The wasteland is littered with items that can be sold for caps, even the junk you might think is useless. Items like pre-war money, cigarettes, and silver utensils are particularly valuable, but even everyday objects like tin cans, desk fans, and toasters can be sold or scrapped for materials.
Keep an eye out for safes, toolboxes, and locked containers, which often hold valuable items. If you invest in the “Scrounger” perk, you’ll find more ammo in containers, which can be sold for a decent amount of caps.
2. Sell Ammo and Weapons
As you explore the Commonwealth, you’ll undoubtedly come across a wide variety of weapons and ammo. While it’s always good to keep a well-stocked arsenal, you’ll often find duplicates or weapons you don’t use. These can be sold to vendors for a tidy profit.
Rare weapons, like the Fat Man or Power Fist, can fetch a high price, but even low-level weapons can add up. If you’ve picked up the “Cap Collector” perk, you’ll get even better deals when buying and selling with merchants.
3. Complete Quests
Quests are one of the best ways to earn caps in Fallout 4. Many quests reward you with a healthy sum of caps upon completion, and some even offer additional rewards like unique weapons or armor. The more difficult the quest, the more caps you’re likely to earn.
Don’t be afraid to negotiate for a higher reward, either. With high enough Charisma, you can persuade NPCs to increase their payment, sometimes by a significant amount.
4. Set Up and Manage Settlements
Building and managing settlements isn’t just about creating safe havens for the people of the Commonwealth-it can also be a great way to generate income. By setting up shops in your settlements, you can earn a steady stream of caps over time.
To do this, you’ll need to unlock the “Local Leader” perk, which allows you to build stores and workstations in your settlements. Once your shops are up and running, they’ll begin generating caps that you can collect periodically. The more settlers you have, and the higher their happiness, the more profitable your shops will be.
5. Craft and Sell Chems
If you’ve got a bit of a chemist in you, crafting and selling chems can be a lucrative business. Fallout 4 has a wide variety of chems, from the ever-popular Jet to the more obscure Grape Mentats. Each of these can be crafted at a chemistry station using ingredients found throughout the wasteland.
Chems are in high demand, and vendors will pay good money for them. Just be careful about using them yourself-chems can be addictive, and withdrawals can seriously hamper your effectiveness in combat.
6. Hunt and Sell Meat
The Commonwealth is home to all sorts of mutated creatures, many of which drop meat when killed. This meat can be cooked and sold to vendors for a decent profit. Certain meats, like Deathclaw steak or Radstag meat, fetch higher prices than others.
Hunting also has the added benefit of helping you level up, and the meat you don’t sell can be used to cook meals that grant various buffs. If you’re a fan of survival mode, hunting becomes even more essential, as it’s one of the best ways to keep yourself fed and healthy.
7. Invest in Charisma
While not a direct money-making method, investing in your Charisma stat can help you make more caps in the long run. High Charisma allows you to negotiate better deals with vendors, increasing the amount you get for items you sell and decreasing the cost of items you buy.
8. Pickpocketing and Stealing
If you’re not above a bit of thievery, pickpocketing and stealing can be profitable, albeit risky. With the right perks, you can pickpocket NPCs to steal caps, ammo, and other valuable items.
Breaking into locked safes and containers is another option, though be careful not to get caught. If you’re detected, you’ll lose some reputation and could provoke a hostile response. Investing in the “Pickpocket” and “Sneak” perks can make this approach more viable.
9. Farm and Sell Crops
Plant crops like corn, mutfruit, and tatoes in your settlements, and assign settlers to tend them. Once the crops are harvested, you can sell them to vendors or use them to craft chems and other items that can be sold for profit.
Happy hunting, and may your pockets always be full of caps!
