This guy is no innocent victim, he's a hostile intelligence operator who is directly threatening US national security (and by extension, the security of every nation that enjoys protection from the USA). This "whistle blower" went on open-ended fishing expeditions to get a media scoop on classified military secrets. When he offered to give technical assistance to a leaker he crossed the line and broke the law, and if you do this you deserve to have the full prosecutorial wrath of the entire US government brought down on you. I'm sorry but when you directly target the US national security establishment with coercive attempts to exfiltrate information you cross the line of being a journalist. Journalists do not actively attempt to elicit information, there are standards of conduct for that.
