My cousin Kate and I booked Assateague Oceanside camping back in January -it books up very quickly and dates are released 6 months out. Assateague Island is a barrier island off the coast of Mayland and Virginia inhabited by "wild ponies". Kate picked me up from Brooklyn Wednesday and we stayed at hers in PA then started our adventure Thursday.
Thursday - Roadtrip to Assateague! We set up the tent, walked on the beach, explored the woods, found ponies grazing by the toilets, made a campfire, cooked dinner on the grill, drank sangria, made smores, and slept in the tent.
Friday - I woke up for sunrise after a freezing night in the tent, campsite tour, walked Harley on the beach, had breakfast, walked through the woods, found a skeleton, found some ponies on the beach, watched ponies grazing, sat on the beach - it was too cold to swim, had a nap, drove out and met Kate's parents (my Aunt and Uncle), showed them our campsite and walked on the beach, went to a local brewery with a farm, had blueberry seltzer, looked at the goats, went back to camp for dinner and cooked on the campfire, made smores again, and settled for another night in the tent.
Saturday - Woke up for sunrise, found a lost dog, watched a pod of dolphins with breakfast, packed up the tent, drove to Chincoteague in Virginia to meet my Aunt and Uncle and other cousin at the AirB'n'B, finally showered after 3 days, went on a wildlife trail, saw snapping turtles, sat by the harbour to see the NASA rocket launch.
Sunday - drove back to Assateague, saw a 2-day old foal, watched the ponies, saw the foal feeding from it's mum, got lunch at the Assateague surf shop, and drove home.
