I have a confession, the only luthier I've watched before I come across to you is Olaf (which means I don't know much about luthier-ing) It's fascinating to see another shape of tools, like your clamps is looking much different with Olaf's It's also interesting to know your own preference, like using carbon paper instead of chalks (I remember Olaf also not using chalks it looks like dark lipstick but I forgot what its' name) P.S. Hello there, Ash!
@SculptyWorks
3 жыл бұрын
Olaf is great! ❤ But techniques (and tools) can vary a bit from luthier to luthier. I remember he uses a dozen clamps on the bass bar; I never saw the need for that many if the fit is truly perfect. Also he leaves his bass bars long all the way to the end before trimming to size; mine start out at the final length. Variations like that can be used to tell where in the world a violin comes from (as some regions would develop their own quirks) and in some cases even specific makers. 😊
@TheVoitel
3 жыл бұрын
There are quite a few luthiers out there who create their own clamps! By the way I don’t really understand why the english word is luthier. I mean, a luthier builds *lutes.* In german we just call it „Fiddlemaker“ (Geigenbauer). Anyway, you need to remember that there’s no real standard procedure to create a viola of any kind, so different schools of makers come up with different methods, hacks and tools.

Varnishes are made with volatile compounds like alcohol and turpentine and a myriad of other stuff you don't want in your lungs, that as part of the varnish drying process evaporate into the air. You can get quite a buzz if you don't have good ventilation while varnishing! I don't recommend it. 😉 Oil-based violin varnishes are usually milder because they dry slowly. Spirit-based varnishes are the worst because they dry very fast.

Using that small speaker for the chladni patterns is brilliant. I struggled using a whole stereo system because I couldn't position the speaker in the right spot for anything other than the mode 5. That’s so saaddd! I hope you get a violin soon! Judging by the fact that this post was made 1 month ago, you probably did. Wish you the best 🎻

Well, in all fairness, there are two of them. And since they apparently believe that they can do 40 hours of practicing a day - EACH! - they must have thought the violin assembly would go equally fast. Moral of the story? Don’t think - GO PRACTICE!

Love watching this. Love your choice of music, I play viola so I have worked on the Bach and Pavanne is so beautful and soothing piece that if I was carving it would be what I would be listening.
