I do miss the days of new Aston Martins being beautiful. Compared to the first gen Vanquish and the DB9, this looks just like a clown to me. I agree with Harry that the dash is an absolute mashup of horridness and the V12 makes up for a lot thankfully. It better be a special drive for that money. Many thanks Harry for a great review.

I was playing around with the configurator on the Aston website, and there are styling options to make this thing look a thousand times better (rear wing delete, removing the carbon fibre bonnet, sophisticated colours etc.), to the point where you can get it to look quite classy and stylish. Why anyone would order a V12 Vantage in this spec is beyond me...

I believe a lot of Aston's current struggles when it comes to sales could be laid squarely at the design department's door. The good ol' Vantage and DB9 were simply irresistible, while these newer models never quite seemed to have the same panache. Then there's the interior, which is their weakest point indeed. If I had that sort of money to burn on a new sports car, I think I'd patiently sign up for a spot on Ferrari's waiting list.

That's what lots of people (including Jeremy Clarkson if I recall correctly) said the last time Aston revealed a V12 Vantage... Why on earth would this be the last V12?? I owned the new Vantage V8 and enjoyed it. I gave it to JayEmm on Cars for his KZitem review in 2020. Whilst the looks aren’t loved by all, I thought mine was gorgeous with the original front end. It always lacked a bit of steering/suspension finesse and the traction in the wet was a bit lacking. However, I find this Vantage V12 rather ugly and extremely overpriced. Interior was dated when I had mine and it’s not commensurate with the asking price of this model.

One of the first Harry reviews where I think it lacks detail (for clarity I own a "regular" 2019 Vantage). 1) you mention the diff, but fail to draw information on them swapping it from e diff to mechanical in the V12 variant 2) I don't get the button comments, a manufacturer gets hammered for putting touch screens in, but if one puts buttons then it is too many? One of the precise reasons I purchased the Vantage was because it had buttons! To note I find it, usable once you know where they are. 3) The outdated tech, I don't give a stuff, frankly. The only thing some owners complain about is not having android auto/carplay, easily resolved with an add in, even via AM dealers. 4) Harry you can get tyre pressures in the tyre pressure menu 5) the S button, changes throttle, gearbox and exhaust (at least on the V8 it opens the valves in S+ and Track). 6) the piece of tape over the speedo...it infruitaited me throughout the video.

The dual-clutch vs torque convertor is an interesting question and seems to divide a lot of people. I have a couple of torque converter performance cars and a dual clutch performance car. The torque converters are really really good at giving you a smooth ride in traffic, but when you are on it, as Harry says, you do feel the dual clutch is crisper. For me it's also a choice between manual and dual clutch and a separate choice of a torque converter car. And that's because a dual clutch is a joy in traffic compared to a manual so I am happy to sacrifice some jerkyness at low speeds for something that is crisp and F1-like when I'm driving hard or on track. Finally I'd add that if you like to be in tune with what your mechanicals are doing, you get a feeling the torque converter doesn't really like to have it's gears changed and prefers to be in control, whereas on a dual clutch, you really feel like you are the driver and it's a manual gearbox with lightning-fast changes.

Owning a Vantage, all the comments about the “poor” interior make me laugh. Not having to dive into menus on a touchscreen to, say, operate the aircon is brilliant. It all works beautifully; I genuinely don’t understand why people moan on about “old Mercedes tech”. I personally prefer the look of the V8 to the V12, which I think is a bit overdone. Both make the old Vantage look incredibly dated though.

Interesting you say that as I have similar thoughts regarding the interior of my Jaguar Project8. Journos kept banging on how it wasn’t good enough for a £150k car when it was launched but I love how it’s so straightforward, Apple CarPlay always works perfectly too. It might not look flash but 4 years on I really like the simplicity of it! Guess it’s a similar story with your Vantage..

well, my "old vantage" is even better in that regard. I've fitted front and rear cameras, and installed Apple CarPlay (not to mention 200 cell cats). I have all the "mod cons" discretely hidden away, but also a screen that can be completely retracted so as to not look like a 7" ASUS tablet from 2010. Further; the exterior proportions are definitely more on the classic side, being smoother, but not once do I ever think it looks "incredibly dated". I do like the new Vantage, unlike many fellow owners of the old. However, the "upgrade cost" simply isn't worth it. I live in Germany next to a derestricted autobahn, and my V8 sounds delicious and is plenty fast enough.

@@astonishing1964 I have Apple CarPlay on my car too. The comment about styling is obviously only my opinion, but stick an old Vantage next to a new one, or even a late model DB9 or Vanquish and I think you’ll see what I mean. Having driven both, I can absolutely say that dynamically the new car is in a different league. Good that you’re happy with your car, but if anyone says the old one is better as an actual car that you use, then I think that’s nonsense.

I totally agree. Everybody is bashing on the interior, but the buttons make it very easy to live with. And this interior is only 4 years old. There will likely be only I-pad like touchscreens in the future. Pretty convinced I'm gonna be happy with this functional buttons layout going forward. Because it just works. But in this V12 interior the key differenciators are really the seats.

Aston Martin and the other supercar brands should just close outright, if it's all electric from now on. You get these things for the sound experience of the different engines and how they differ in driving technic with the gearbox, and that's out of the window now completely. The next Corolla will be just as quick and sound the same. Handling can differ, but it's not enough for me to get excited, since you can get it easily with most brands. I'm so sad about this future for cars and motorcycles...

The problem with this car is somewhat emblematic of Aston’s entire range at the moment - for the money there’s just better and more desirable cars out there. It’s overpriced and doesn’t really offer anything aside from the name. Why they chose this as the launch spec is another matter…

I totally agree , I ran a DB11 for a month why me 600LT was being repaired, someone reversed into it , anyway it’s the biggest motoring disappointment I have experienced, interior is a disaster, lazy gear box, very poor traction , high break pedal, exterior design is lovely. Bought a F Type R , better car by far, half the price , Aston have been trading on the Aston name and rely on people buying their cars because it’s an Aston.

As someone who worked on and off for 4 years at Aston I can as close to be positive that this car will long term be a snotter, just like Thor business model. Without the badge this brand would be consigned to the bin. I thoroughly enjoy your content Harry but, please take off those rose coloured glasses.

Maybe Aston Martin’s pricing department are taking the pith out of all of us. The first ever Vantage is for sale currently at £500,000, and it just happens to be bright red 😂Also a burgundy one I couldn’t be bothered to get to DB5 or 6, recently sold at auction for a smidgeon over £500k. The first Vantage was 1965. Again I can’t be faffed to look at original price, but I’m sure it was £6-8k. So factored over 57 years and without the need for a full restoration, keeping the mileage low, that one you drove Harry will be worth a gazillion pounds in 57 years 😂😂

i was just thinking of harry's lovely back country narrow'er roads as we have in nz, whether of not he ever comes across a cop car with the speeds of all his test cars do ie standing acceleration etc speeds & whether he has radar detectors to slow down in case.. Also as harry mentions about the electric steering cars for the last decade, & how they have a certain non feel about them as for example my manual 997.2 turbo gets last of the mechanical steering cars & totally feels 'everything especially on some of our crappy-ier roads sent back through the steering wheel, having full bilsteins will also have something to do with this..back to harrys v12 vantage test, also on the fence about it's rear spoiler- i think could have been better designed?. this car guessing 600-700,00nz$ here. informative as ever thankyou harry's garage.
