I personally have the USB plugged into my computer and then I use an optical cable as well. But that is just to make it really simple for me to switch from Xbox sound to PC sound via Optical. So it's really personal preference. I think that the optical sounds a little bit better (but I in no way can substantiate that as fact or fiction.) So I know that doesn't really answer your question but I have a friend of mine who uses the same headset and only uses USB. The USB makes things sound a little louder to me over the optical cable that I use. But I'm not plugged straight into my motherboard when using the optical cable I have an external sound card and I think that is why it sounds better. If I wasn't using that I would use the USB. Wow... I made this comment way to long. But there you go my complete thought process. haha sorry.

@ThomasMuehler
8 жыл бұрын
The MixAmp Pro TR is quite different than the MixAmp Pro Gen 2 and since I never owned the Gen 2 I can't tell you for sure. However, if you hook it up to your PC and go to "Playback Devices" then click the MixAmp Pro Gen 2 and then click configure (it's near the bottom left of that window you are in) then it will list the options that it offers such as Stereo, 5.1, 7.1. If the MixAmp is only Stereo without the optical it will just say Stereo. If it allows 5.1 then it will show 5.1 and if it shows 7.1 then it will give you 7.1. But you also might have to click say 5.1 with your mouse then click next and go through that.

Do you have 7.1 sorround Sound on it, or should you plug the optical before you will get it? And can you get the sorround on the normal a40's?
@ThomasMuehler
8 жыл бұрын
When I'm using it on the computer I turn off surround sound on the MixAmp because it does it automatically. If you select the "headphones" like I show in the video (without anything plugged into the Optical port or it will override it and not make that port work) then you'll get at least 5.1. If your soundcard allows 7.1 through optical then you can do it that way. As for getting surround sound on the normal a40's it depends on the setup and soundcard you have. Once again depending on the hardware you have the MixAmp is usually going to be better. But if you have a really good sound card then that will probably be better.

@ThomasMuehler

Under Astro Command Center for the stream port you could plug in your music through the aux port which would allow it go to your stream. As for keeping it low for you I don't know. I think you could also control that through OBS. When you're getting that technical you usually need to have a mixer to control all the sound.

@ThomasMuehler

You could certainly do a personal sound test and see for yourself. All you would do is just plug in your optical cable (if you have one) into your motherboard and then click that is default device. Test out the sound and then later switch it back to the MixAmp and see what you think sounds better. I personally use the optical cable on both my PC and my Xbox One because I think it makes it really simple to switch the audio that way. I also think that the optical sounds better. But I'm not using my motherboard I use an external sound card that I think sounds better then the USB. But they both sound good.

I don't own them anymore so I can't do any testing. But as far as I remember it ended with an aux cord that supported both stereo and microphone meaning it should work on any PC. Or honestly anything that supports that same thing. 1. Is your PC a single slot 3.5 mm aux female port? Or is it split into two ports? If split into two ports then you'll need a Y Splitter. 2. Do you have it plugged in fully? Sometimes if you don't then it won't read correctly. 3. Have you gone into your sound settings and made it the default sound and communication device (along with going into the microphone side and doing the same thing)? 4. Does your computer require you to go into a different sound setting to select headset (for example on my laptop I have to go to like "realtek sound __" I don't remember the exact name. But if I don't do that then the headset isn't seen by my computer which is dumb. Which is what I would put my money on for being the issue.

So I have a major question... I got some a40 TRs back in 2018 and hooked them up to my pc no problem. Everything worked flawlessly and I could properly mix my game and voice audio.. About 2 months ago, my astros just completely stopped allowing me to mix my audio. After deeply researching this problem, I have came to discover that you NEED TO HAVE AN OPTICAL CABLE.... But here's the catch.... the first 2 years of owning this headset, I NEVER ONCE had an optical cable plugged in, my computer doesn't even have an optical in port.. and it worked absolutely perfect!!! HOW?!?!?!?! How did it work like that? And now it just doesn't work at all?? And there's not a single trace of evidence that I can find online to show that they work without an optical cable.. did I just get lucky somehow? Or can they actually work without it? Please help bro... I am so lost and genuinely frustrated.
@ThomasMuehler
3 жыл бұрын
You don't need an optical cable. 1. USB to PC. 2. MixAmp set to PC mode. 3. Under sound settings (on your PC, playback tab ) select Astro GAME as default device. Astro VOICE as default communication device. Those may not be the exact names but close enough. Mixing will then work. Just ensure you don't have anything plugged into the optical port (or if you do there can't be any power going to the optical port or else it will override the GAME channel). So, the reason why it worked before is because you just happened to get it right.

+binarystar21 So I'm going to be honest. I don't know what the correct answer for this is. When I'm on my PC I use the optical cable as well and I use it with Dolby switched off because I think it sounds better too. There is a problem that they have with the surround to that makes it sound tingy. If you check out this link it will show you what I mean. bit.ly/1R45W8p So I guess either do some more testing or leave it off. I typically enable the slider for surround on my sound card, and leave the dolby button off on mixamp. For the most part, games sound good. @ThomasMuehler
7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you would still be able to use the knobs if you set it up correctly. So, as long as you use I think it's called "Astro chat" (NOT Astro game) as your input for your voice programs (discord, TeamSpeak, etc...) then the voice knob will work. As for the optical cable that is something that you would have to test out for yourself since it's very subjective. Personally, I prefer to use my optical cable because the sound card on my PC can be set to 7.1 surround sound which I think sounds clearer and has better directional audio than just the USB which is 6.1. There are two important things with this though. 1. If you are using USB or an optical that is set to 7.1 you shouldn't have the Dolby button on because it's already on through your computer. 2. Not all optical cables have 7.1 due to the motherboard/soundcard you have in your computer which means you are getting stereo which means you should use the USB to get surround sound. If you do test it I would love to know what you think if you prefer the sound from the optical or from the USB. Hopefully that all makes sense.

Galahad, I have a really weird situation, where for some reason, every other windows update that happens, I have to re-install my Realtek Hd Audio Manager and then I have to check the box that says "Disable front panel jack detection" in order for everything to work again, which is weird because when I do this, instead of having my mixamp's dial all the way turned right on voice, it has to be turned all the way left to game instead for me to hear anything, and I cannot find answers anywhere on why this is and what is causing this mess up. Also, if it helps at all, I am using the Razer BlackWidow Croma v2 with the regular extra bass earplug headphones I have connected to the keyboard via the keyboard's aux and then the keyboards aux connected to the front of the pc aux port as well as the astro usb connected to the front of the pc and this setup has always worked for me but every windows update it messes up on me and I have to keep tinker back and forth with the settings just to fix it. I would greatly appreciate any kind of advice or response on this, thanks and keep up the good vids.

I apologize I don't fully understand this. Can you explain it to me one more time? So, your earphones -> Keyboard Aux -> PC Aux. Then your MixAmp -> PC USB? What settings do you have set under your sound setting default? " I have connected to the keyboard via the keyboard's aux and then the keyboards aux connected to the front of the pc aux port as well as the astro usb connected to the front of the pc."
@Rick_Sanchez_Jr.
5 жыл бұрын
@Sir Galahad Ok, I have my Sony Bass earbud headphones that are connected to the keyboard's aux port, the keyboard itself is then connected via usb AND via aux to the front of the pc usb and aux ports. My astros are connected via usb to the front of the pc. And this setup has worked before the windows update, I am simply telling you my setup so you can get a reference of what I am working with and possibly help with the problem. My issue is, when this Windows update came out, it made it so that the only way I can get my sony bass earphones to work is by selecting the option "Disable front panel jack detection" in my Realtek Hd Audio Manager and before the update, I'm pretty sure that option was checked off before the update and the update caused something to mess up that I cannot diagnose no matter how many videos I watch. Now when I have everything the same, for some reason my astro's mic is not as clear or sharp as it used to be and the sound is not as good. I think it might be because the disable front jack panel option is making it so that the usb of the astro's is using the backend of the pc's aux or something, I am just really not sure and can't find any answers online either. Might just buy the new 2019 Astro's as this point...

I feel awful. This went to my spam folder so I just now saw it. I was even looking out for it and still missed it. 1. The MixAmp Pro TR is considered a sound card. Your Realtek HD Audio Manager is also a soundcard. Therefore, you have two sound cards. In windows you need to select which soundcard you want to use. Either the MixAmp Pro TR or the Realtek HD Audio Manager. - You can select that by doing the following: Click your speaker in the bottom right then it will either say A. Astro blah blah or B. Realtek. Select which you want to use and it will switch to it. If that didn't make sense another way as of windows 1903 is search for sound settings. then either under "Choose your output device" select Astro Or Realtek. Or click "Sound Control Panel" on the right and then select there. 2. When you go in and disable your front panel jack detection you are essentially disabling your Realtek and auto defaulting to MixaAmp in your sound settings that I mentioned above but in a round about way. But then you shouldn't get any sound to your earbuds so that is strange. 3. Have you used Astro Command Center to either update your headset or adjust the microphone volume or presets? Such as warm, night, or some other settings? Because that could help clear up your microphone. Also, make sure under your sound settings that the Microphone is selected under your recording tab and i s set to default communication and default device. Or else it could be using another microphone which is why it sounds so bad. 4. If I were you I would set it up like this: A. MixAmp Pro TR USB to PC USB (I'd use the back due to it just being cleaner. But user choice). B. Keyboard Aux to back Aux panel directly into soundcard or whatever. (cleaner audio since not going through your computer getting electric noise but once again user choice). C. This is the important part. Under the "Sound Control Panel" which I mention how to get to above. When I want the MixAmp Audio I would set the default device to "Headphones Astro A40 game". I would set "Default Communication Device" to Headset Earphone Astro A40 Voice). Under Recording I would choose "Headset Microphone Astro A40 Voice" as BOTH the default device and default communication device." Under any of your software sources. Such as Discord, Teamspeak, etc. Then you'll want to choose your input device as your "Headset Microphone Astro A40 Voice" and your Output Device as "Headset Earphone Astro A40 Voice" NOT "Headphones Astro A40 Game" or else your volume knob will not work. Since The Headphones Astro A40 Game is one channel (Well techincally 5.1/7.1) and the "Headset Earphone A40 voice" is technically another channel strictly for voice. Which is what makes the voice dial work correctly. D. When I would want to use the Realtek I would go back under "Sound Control Panel" and I would choose Realtek Audio Manager as my default sound and default communication device. On both the Playback and Recording Tab. As it will then use that for both audio and chat. E. If you are wanting to do more complicated things and you don't realize what the difference between "Default Device" and "Default Communication Device". I'd do some research to figure it out. Let me know if something there didn't make sense. We are treading into more complex stuff than most users are comfortable with. The key knowledge points are understanding how the Astro A40 TR MixAmp Pro works. Along with how your Sound settings on your PC work. Hey, perhaps you can help me with this. I have followed the instructions, have everything set to the proper default device, no optical cable slot on my PC. However, audio is very quiet coming through the headset, even though my pc volume says 100%. Adding to that, rotating the volume knob on the mixamp does nothing, but the game/voice audio alters the audio... but it seems when I rotate it to voice while chatting on discord it kills all audio of people talking.

@ThomasMuehler

It sounds like you have one of the sound settings wrong somewhere in the chain. Depending on the program you are talking to your friends with you may need to change the settings there as well. So, like you'll need to change it on you PC sound settings. Then if you are on Discord under the sound settings in Discord you'll need to change it there as well. As currently it sounds like for some reason you have the MixAmp Pro Stream Port as your default (if you go into Astro Command Center under the Streaming tab you can adjust those volumes and one fix would be to just mute those). But that is why your friends are hearing you is you have an incorrect setting ticked.

Hey man! First, thanks for your videos they are really informative. I have issues with my new ASTRO a40 TR editions that seem to shock me to say the least. My previous (gen 1 I believe) ASTRO a40's had NO sound bleed whenever I would be gaming with my friends etc AND able (via old mix amp) to connect the new Xbox one console into it via optical cable so I truly can have the best of both worlds. Unfortunately my old ones broke and I had to replace them with my new TR's. My issues are the bleeding gaming sound going into my mic which goes to my friends ear and the fact that when I turn on my Xbox one, it basically turns off my pc sound (music and etc). Have you been experiencing bleeding sound? And if so is there a fix? I've tried updating everything from the mix amp to the pc. Thanks
@ThomasMuehler
8 жыл бұрын
No, I haven't experienced the bleeding sound but I know people who have. The problem that is causing that I think and that I always tell people to change (not sure if they do or not because they don't get back to me) is to open your Astro Command Center with your MixAmp plugged into the PC with PC mode on and go to the stream port and then turn everything down then sync to device. Unless you are using that to record stuff. That should fix the problem and if you want to find the actual root cause get in a party with friends turn up one at a time and sync to the device and see what makes it cause the sound bleed. As for turning off the sound when your console gets turned on the MixAmp prioritizes optical audio. How you can get both at the same time is by switching your default setting from "headphones" to "headset earphone" but that will also make it stereo sound on your PC. But that's technically the chat channel which is why you can hear both at the same time. If you don't see that then your MixAmp is on console mode instead of PC mode. Hopefully, that answers your questions and it makes sense. If not let me know.

Everything crystal clear but just 2 quick questions. 1, when i plug in my optical cable onto my port on my pc, it recognizes it but i get this really distorted robot sounding voice and audio and when i remove it i get crisp audio. Is it my computers port thats the problem or the wire itself ( i just got my astros so they couldnt have been damaged i suppose) and if it is my port, can it be fixed/ replaced? Also, for the recording part, I have my mixamp pro voice set as default however, for the line, it is disabled and I cannot enable it since it doesnt recognize anything with a line. To be even more panfully obvious, the audio advantage micro 2 isnt even recognized as one of the playback devices ( sorry for not being that specific), so does that enhance the idea that the port is the issue?
@ThomasMuehler
8 жыл бұрын
Sorry for such a late reply. Been busy. 1. It sounds like you are using an Audio Advantage Micro 2 is that correct? Or are you just going off my video? If yes that is correct it's kind of strange and you need to download special software from I believe turtle beach in order for it to say "Audio Advantage Micro 2". Turtle Beach has instructions on it somewhere on their website. Also, when you do see "Audio Advantage Micro 2" under your "playback devices" you will need to right-click it and go to "properties" then go to the "advanced tab" and make sure that it is set to at least 48000hz or you will get bad audio. So that should fix it. If you aren't using the Micro 2 then pretty much the same thing minus the downloading software part. But do go into properties and make sure it's set to 48000hz. Anything below that will cause robot or high sounds because the MixAmp operates off 48000hz. 2. For all your audio coming from people talking (discord, TeamSpeak, Xbox app, skype, etc.) it should be set to "Headset Earphone Astro MixAmp Pro Voice" because that is what allows sound to go through and allows you to hear your friends when something is plugged into the optical port on the MixAmp because the optical port takes priority. 3. The "Line" function should be under "Playback Devices" then the "Recording Tab" if you don't see the "Line" input then right click on the white space where you see your other recording devices and click "Show disabled devices". If you still don't see it make sure your MixAmp is on PC mode, not console mode. Which you do by holding down the power button for about 3 seconds. If you MixAmp doesn't change colors (the light around the power button) make sure you have a "TR" between the big knob and the small knob on the MixAmp. I think that answers everything? If not or you have any other questions let me know. It's always good to know if you have everything working as well.

So what does the optical cable do if you don't necessarily need to use it. Are there any advantages of connecting it to your PC?
@ThomasMuehler
8 жыл бұрын
+xboxgamer Quite honestly I have no idea. The reason why I use the optical cable is for the following reasons. Keep in mind that some of these could just be placebo effect. 1. It makes it really simple for me to switch from my PC sound to my Xbox sound without changing any settings. (So I have 1 optical going to my PC and 1 going to my console and I switch out according to what I'm using at the time.) 2. I think the sound from the optical cable is better than from the USB cable (this could really just be placebo effect). 3. When I go under sound settings I can chose if I want it to be stereo, 5.1, or 7.1 where I can't do that if I'm using the USB. 4. I think I get better directional sound using my soundcard set to 7.1 and then plugged into the MixAmp via Optical. (Once again could actually sound better or I just think it does).

@ThomasMuehler
3 жыл бұрын
@@ThaqzD Hmm, I would verify that the Realtek Digital Output doesn't have any processing on it. As sometimes that will mess it up. Other times that could be due to the wrong format (for example if not set to PCM or Dolby). Other times it could be that you are selecting a "stream" port where you are pulling in information from multiple audio lines. Could also be that that the audio is placed on too little to too high of a codec (24 Hz 192 KHz vs 16 or whatever). All that to say it could be due to a few different things. But I don't know how to relate information to help fix it since I don't know how you have it setup and stuff like that.

Did the set up exactly like yours and when I play Heroes of the Storm the audio is just so overwhelming in game where I cant hear any of my friends on steam chat cause of the volume being so loud. Is there anyway to fix that ? Does it make a difference in sound quality running optical or usb?
@ThomasMuehler
8 жыл бұрын
I have personally found that USB is a little louder than the optical. But that might be just because of the sound card that I am using. I think I also prefer the Optical because it allows me to have the big nob on the MixAmp control game audio and the small nob to control voice. So you have two options. 1. Lower the volume of the game in game. So open Heroes of The Storm and under settings I'm sure there is an audio setting and then you would turn all of them down or just the "master" setting down so you can hear your friends. 2. Use the little nob on the MixAmp toward "voice" (right turn on the MixAmp) and then turn volume with the big nob up if needed so you can hear your friends better. Hopefully that will fix your problem if not let me know.

I don't own speakers but you should be able to plug your speakers either into the "Aux" port near where you put your headphones in or what I'm thinking is more likely the case if you plug it into the "stream" port which is near your optical port. Then just make sure that in Astro Command Center (on the PC/Mac) under stream port that you have the analog stream output volume up and probably the game volume up. Unless you are also wanting chat to come through then the chat audio as well. Microphone would be your own microphone so that's not important and Aux would be whatever is plugged into your Aux. Hopefully this all makes sense.

I don't fully understand your question. There is the MixAmp Pro and then there is the MixAmp Pro TR which is what I am using in this video. The difference there is one is fully digital and the other isn't which makes it easier to setup for the computer/consoles. There are other things too but that doesn't matter if you are just using it on the PC. As for using the optical cable it is personal preference. I brought it up because the soundcard that I use has better 7.1 virtual surround sound when I use that instead of the MixAmps 7.1 surround sound. How you can tell is if you have an optical port on your PC or not and if you can go into the sound setting on your PC and turn on 7.1 virtual surround sound or not. Also, the MixAmp allows you to control sound a bit better, gives you a physical knob you can turn, and amplifies the sound better than some stock soundboards.

TexasSpectrumPaintball Yes, it will 100% work if you have a headset that has both the microphone and sound in one cable 4 pole 3.5mm cable. I used a pair of Turtle Beach Ear Force Sentinel Pro's to test and I got excellent voice playback with them at 50% sound. (The big knob at 50% and in Astro Command Center mic feedback volume at 100%. It will be less pronounced the lower the volume of the headset is.) It would probably work with an audio splitter as well but in my experience that neutralizes surround sound.

I recently picked these up, but I'm confused. Are they only stereo if I use just USB? My PC does have the optical audio, but is that the only way to actually get the 5.1/7.1? Might have been helpful to explain what the benefit of using either option was. Good video tho
@ThomasMuehler
8 жыл бұрын
I explain the differences I'm pretty sure in my review video. Since these videos are strictly just to show you how to hook them up to your thing of choice. So if you use the "headset earphone" (under sound settings) then that will be stereo. If you use "Headphones" then that will be at least 5.1 I don't know if it does 7.1 but based off the test tone it is at least 5.1. Then depending on your sound card you can set your optical cable to 7.1 or 5.1. But in order to select "headphone" you need to make sure there isn't an optical cable in your MixAmp.
@jnkhan82
8 жыл бұрын
So I looked into it more, you actually don't need the optical at all for PC-after speaking with the Astro Rep. The new TR amp is a sound card unlike the previous gen 2, you only need to use the USB to create virtual surround sound. The optical is actually provided for consoles, because the sound card software does not work for audio, only chat, so it needs to still pull audio through your console. So its pretty much a waste to attach two cables (usb and optical) to your PC/Mac...optical cable will just bypasses the sound card function on the mixamp, which is not needed.. A nice setup I was able to make, and get surround on both was to plug my usb into PC, and optical into Ps4, I lose chat on Ps4, but for single player games-it doesn't matter, bit of a trade off, if I'm not lazy I'll plug in the usb into the ps4...
@ThomasMuehler
8 жыл бұрын
Jahanzeb khan Yep, you're exactly right. Which is why in the video I give you the option to either just use USB or if you have a better sound card that utilizes the Optical Cable you can go that route (which is what is true in my situation).

+Jahanzeb khan At the very beginning of the video I say that the optical cable is optional. And when I go into the sound settings for your PC I mention that only if you are choosing to use the optical cable to choose a specific setting but if not to choose the other one. But you are correct I didn't go into detail as to why (which I really should have) or that it was because it is it's own sound card. So I'll make sure to send people to your comment if they have questions and to like it so hopefully, it will continue to be near the top of the comment section. Hey man, it’s a long shot that you will answer this question since this video is so old. But could you explain what to do for settings if you have a laptop that does not have an optical audio port?
@ThomasMuehler
4 жыл бұрын
Assuming you have a MixAmp, you just plug it in via USB and then select the correct settings under your sound settings on your PC. Hopefully that made sense. The optical port is not needed. I probably shouldn't have added in the video but I preferred that sound over the USB. But for a long time now I've just been using the USB way. Also, don't turn on Dolby surround sound on the MixAmp as it is already activated when plugged in via USB.

@@itsjacepc8797 For the best experience you need to make sure the game itself supports it. Yes, you need to enable that on the Xbox (I believe, as I don't have an Xbox anymore) and for sure the PC. On the PC it would be under properties (of the Mixamp Pro Game) -> spacial sound -> Atmos.

@ThomasMuehler

+Jose Semino Yep all you would need to do is have a 4 pole 3.5mm cable plugged into the Aux port and then have that plugged into your phone. I don't know if the mic will work at the same time in the sense of you are talking on the phone and trying to call something out in game. But yes you can plug it into your mixamp and talk. As for the 4 pole 3.5mm cable that doesn't come with the headset so you'll have to buy that seperately.

Jose Semino I think that comes to personal preference. My friend that I game with all the time just uses the USB and he can hear things just as well as I can. I use the Optical Audio just because that's what I prefer and I think it sounds better. But really I think it sounds the same. I just like to know what sound is coming into my MixAmp since I also use it on console. But I haven't noticed a difference between either of them.

Hey i have a problem with my Astro a 40 TR, when i play a game, let's say league of legends, then my skype settings are fine, and there's no problem what so ever. But as soon as the game ends, my skype starts to mess with my headset, it swithces the settings within skype to some other settings, than what you and astro reccomend. Which results in that i gotta switch back to the regular settings manually, and this happens untill i go into another game. And in some games like GTA i still have to switch the settings back sometimes. Do you have any clue what i could do to fix this? cause i had the previous version of the headset, and i didn't have the problem back then.

Ok so. I have the A40 TR Headset + MixAmp M80 for Xbox One, and I bought it thinking I could easily use it for PC with just the switch of a cable. The one that comes with it, the 1.0m cable, works on my laptop, but i need a splitter for my desktop. So I got a simple y-splitter and the mic doesn't work now. Should I get a new aux cable or do I need the TR MixAmp for it to work? I wont be happy if i need to drop another $130 but I guess it it means my mic will work I might try it.
@ThomasMuehler

Did you get the correct Y Splitter? This one is the one that you need. Not like the specific one I sent but something that is just like it. (ebay.to/2jnEXWg). I don't think you can get a different Aux cable that would work with the A40 TR that has the microphone and stereo split into two.

Yes, I've bought three different y-splitters, one female to two male, at this point and I'm still having to same problem. The problem is just with the mic. I've used the Aux cable it comes with directly plugged into laptop and it works just fine for both audio and mic, its just when I try to plug it into my desktop and use a splitter that the mic suddenly doesn't want to work.

The Astro is native stereo. Whether it be 5.1 or 7.1 it is both going to be simulated surround sound. Optical only supports simulated surround sound at 7.1/5.1 Another way of saying that is Optical only supports uncompressed 2.0 PCM. Whereas, it supports 5.1/7.1 compressed formats. Such as Pro Logic II. Which also means it isn't native or uncompressed or full resolution 5.1/7.1. Can you tell the difference between compressed versus uncompressed sound? Another subject for another day. Most people would say no and probably be correct. The Astro A40 TR Gen 3 uses Pro Logic II I believe. Which is the one shown in all my videos.

There are different versions of the MixAmp. It seems like you have the generation before this one. If it doesn't say TR on it then it isn't the same MixAmp. It's been a long time since I've looked so I may be off on my actual numbers here. But I believe this is Gen 3 in this video. They are currently on Gen 4. I think you have Gen 2 (which looked the same except it didn't have TR on it and had less functionality). So, I'll try not to get too technical about everything just because I don't know how much you've researched into these things. This is strictly talking about the MixAmp Pro TR 1. When plugged in via USB it will give you 5.1 SIMULATED surround sound automatically. In which case you leave the DOLBY but OFF. As it's already turned on. 2.When plugged in via Optical it can give you 7.1 SIMULATED surround sound. This largely depends on the soundcard in your PC. As some soundcards can provide you with 7.1. Others only 5.1. So it's another step in the chain that varies dramatically based on device. Then it adds the whole dimension if it is dolby compatible or not. Then do you turn on or off the dolby button. And it changes depending on each persons setup. In other words it's a giant complicated mess. 3. The difference between 7.1 SIMULATED surround sound vs 5.1 SURROUND sound is negligible. In a blind test most probably won't be able to notice. In fact most would actually score higher with 2.1 stereo sound than with the surround sound variant. 4. Most games these days aren't even made with 7.1 surround sound. But instead just in Stereo or HRTF. So, if you are playing a game made for stereo (2.1) and using 7.1. You are still only getting 2.1 channels. But the MixAmp may try to "create" channels to make 7.1 but they are broken which gives you worse sound. 5. Basically all of that is to say that from everything I have researched and learned stereo is vastly superior to surround sound and you should only use that. As 7.1 sound for the most part is a gimmick. Especially for headsets. But also to say that the surround sound given from the USB 5.1 is also usually better than the 7.1 surround sound given by the optical because the way it is done is better which provides better sound. So, no you aren't losing anything going from 7.1 to 5.1 in regard to the MixAmp on PC. If anything you are also getting a lot better sound over worse sound.
@ThomasMuehler
4 жыл бұрын
Most of the info is in my previous comment. But don't hyper focus on 7.1 being better than 5.1 in this case. As they are just numbers that don't mean much when it comes to this device. I've found that I prefer the sound of the USB for my Astro's over using the Optical Cable when using them on my PC. As it's better for everything. So no, DON'T go buy the TOSlink adapter.
