As some have pointed out I forgot to include Fujifilm lenses to my list. That was by mistake, and there are fuji lenses that are suitable for astro. Instead of taking down the video and re-uploading it with those lenses I will add them here and on the article found on my website. Here are three native Fuji lenses that are suitable for astro: Fujifilm XF 14mm f2.8 R Fujifilm XF 18mm f2.0 R Fujifilm XF 23mm f1.4 R All the DSLR-mounted APS-C lenses can also be adapted for Fuji along with the DSLR-mounted full-frame lenses. Some have also asked for Pentax lenses, and I will add those to my website article.

Welcome back🙏🏻🙏🏻. Loved your detailed videos and thank you for the great content. I am getting sony a7iii and was wondering if I should get the kit (28-70mm) lens. I want to stat with one lens mainly for night sky photography but for normal daily photography as well. Which lens would you recommend upto $600 budget? Thanks again🙏🏻
@Apalapse
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! I'm assuming the 28-70 mm lens you're referring to is the Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS (reviewed here: www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Sony-FE-28-70mm-f-3.5-5.6-OSS-Lens.aspx)? If so, then I would not recommend this lens since its optical performance is pretty poor compared to what you could by for $600. I would recommend the Sigma A 24-70 mm f/2.8 DG DN if you can expand your budget to around $900. The Tamron 28-75 mm f/2.8 Di III RXD has good center resolution performance but astro performance is not great. It is within your $600 budget, though. Another recommendation would be to look for a Tamron 15-30 mm f/2.8 which are selling for around $500 on eBay (www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=tamron+15-30mm+f2.8&_sacat=0&rt=nc&LH_Sold=1&LH_Complete=1). Pair that with a cheap adapter so that you can use it with the Sony, and you have an amazing astro setup. Also, a little "hack" you can use is buying one of these lenses on Amazon brand new to test it out, then returning it within 30 days. That way you can "rent" the lens for free (minus the upfront cost) and see if you like the optical quality.

@Apalapse
4 жыл бұрын
The Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 looks good for astro, I'm surprised I didn't notice it when I put together this article. Here is a pretty good review of the lens I found: phillipreeve.net/blog/review-tamron-17-28mm-f-2-8-di-iii-rxd/#Coma_correction. Compared to the Laowa 15mm f2 the coma is noticeably better and at all focal lengths at f2.8 the coma never reaches any serious levels. The correction is not perfect but it should be acceptable for most people. Sharpness is very good wide open at 17mm through the whole frame, but corner sharpness falls off a bit as focal length increases, but never to alarming levels - again the performance is acceptable. Chromatic aberrations are also visible but again nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the survey. Just a suggestion - Some of the photos of lenses in the video don’t match the text so it’s sometimes not clear what lens you are actually talking about. Also, I suspect most nightscapers would take exception to you disparaging their favourite Nikon 14-24mm zoom for DSLRs 😉. It’s been used to take more classic nightscape images than most of the lenses on your recommended list. The new Z mount version is better but that’s true of most of the new mirrorless lenses outperforming the older DSLR versions of the lenses.

Addressing your question about the Sigma 18-35 mm f1.8, a LOT of people have told me to check out this lens and reading the reviews, it looks STELLAR (no pun indended) for astro! For a speedbooster, you will need a quality speed booster such as the Zhonghi Turbo II. Remember that a speedbooster will ONLY increase the field of view of the image, NOT increase the light gathered by the camera, which is dependent on the lens' aperture.

Yes, I didn't mention that one! I'm unfamilar with the RF-series lenses, but I did a little research on the RF 35 mm f1.8 macro lens (I'm assuming that's the 35 mm you're referring to?) and this is what I found. According to this review, www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-rf-35mm-f1-8-is-stm-macro-review/3, the lens has good resolution wide open but there's some haze and fringing at f1.8. This review by opticallimits (very reputable), www.opticallimits.com/canon_eos_ff/1076-canonrf35f18, shows that there is visible coma in the edges (seen in the bokeh test) and that there is massive vignetting. I would say this lens is decent for astro and given the price is should work okay. There are better options, yes, but if this is a lens you want to buy, feel free to use it for capturing the stars.

Aberrations are controlled pretty well in this lens, although it's not entirely perfect. I would give it a 4/5. The samyang performs about the same, maybe a 4.2-4.5/5. Here's a review on that optic: dustinabbott.net/2021/05/samyang-af-24mm-f1-8-review/. I like how they advertise it for astrophotography - very interesting when manufacturers do that.

Checking the Canon EF 35mm f2, while it is sharp wide open in the center at the full frame edge at f2 the image quality is weak, which is also evident by high levels of coma (www.lenstip.com/365.7-Lens_review-Canon_EF_35_mm_f_2_IS_USM_Coma__astigmatism_and_bokeh.html). The RF 35mm f1.8 looks to be a bit better but there is still coma present wide open in the corners. In this review, www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/35mm-f18.htm#coma, I see that on stars the coma isn't too problematic but you can clearly see it on the streetlights. From other tests, the resolution seems pretty good wide open at f1.8 although some reviews mention a "haze" across the entire image frame (not sure what that means). I think this lens would be "okay" for astro, and at $499 it seems like a good deal.

First, here is a good review of the 24mm: www.lenstip.com/430.1-Lens_review-Sigma_A_24_mm_f_1.4_DG_HSM.html and here is a good review of the 20mm: www.lenstip.com/457.1-Lens_review-Sigma_A_20_mm_f_1.4_DG_HSM_Introduction.html. But since it's been more than a year after this video was made, I would like to know how you feel about the new lenses from Sony, 35 f1.4 GM and 50 f1.2 GM? Question for you: Can we infer that the reviews you did on these lenses would be hold up for their use in general photography? Thank you, and yes, since astrophotography values sharpness and aberration performance, these are also qualities you would look for in general photography. That being said, things like flare performance, sunstars, focus breathing, autofocus speed, etc. are not as important for astro but do have implications in normal photography, so if you're going to buy a lens, make sure to check out those properties.

Thanks for watching and for the comment. I found this review on the lens: www.cameralabs.com/tamron-28-200mm-f2-8-5-6-di-iii-rxd-review/2/. Jumping down to where they dicuss the rendering of point sources, as you can see, wide open at 28 mm there is some coma, although I wouldn't call it severe. Compared to other zoom lenses in this category, though, the performance is weaker. Sharpness is fairly good on this lens, which I was surprised about. All in all, I would say don't buy this lens EXCLUSIVELY for astro, but if you need this zoom range, don't hesitate to shoot the stars.

I was wondering if you've ever tried a catadioptric lens with your camera for astrophotography. On paper, anyway, they seem like an ideal solution for those of use using star trackers with limited payload capacity: smaller and lighter than higher focal length prime telephoto lenses, and able to get to very high focal lengths. Don't see any reviews of them with cameras, though, so I'm a bit skeptical. Just wondering if you've had any experience with them. Thanks!

I think you hit the nail on the head. The reach from the 17-70mm will give you a better focal length for portraits and other travel settings. I have been traveling quite a bit this year and I am using a 20mm and 85mm and I always wish I had something LONGER than an 85! 70mm will give you ~150mm equivalent field of view on the M6 which is a great documentary/journalism/portrait focal length. At 17mm and f2.8 you will be in a good spot for aurora photography or any type of astro. Plus, the macro abilities of the 17-70mm will be great for close-up portraits or macro photography in general.

I think that would be neat, especially if you use a mid-range camera 📷 for the samples. Im using an old Canon crop sensor (T6) so sharpness in lense quality is most important to me. That's a good idea! I might do a video in the future where I rent all the lenses and do a direct comparison with my a7r2. A high-megapixel and mid-tier camera will deliver different results since on a high-megapixel camera the differences between lenses will be more drastic (more resolution = more room for error).
