Just learned another key lesson in processing my astro images, thank you very much. Helpful, good to follow and easy to understand. Brilliant!

Thanks for a nice clear, informative tuturial. Just one minor point to avoid confusion, in 'Lab' colour space, the 'a' channel is the amount of Red/Green & not Red/Magenta as you mentioned.

All your Astro tutorials are really helpful and give good directions using Photoshop. For a beginner they are a great help. Please can you do some more showing how to add a H-Alpha taken through a Ha Filter & howto turn the resulting red photo into a gray luminance layer & howto add it into a DSLR RGB astro photo? If possible. Thanks..

Thanks for the great tutorial. What is the difference between doing this and just going into curves and increasing the lighter portion?

F RL Hi. Glad you found the tutorial useful. Luminance uses the tonal values in the image itself to enhance to contrast, as opposed to curves which just generally enhances the contrast overall. Try the two and you'll see the difference 😊

Hi Marscites. Thanks for that. Can't help on your request I'm afraid - I don't use Ha filters and the like, my kit (and my skies) aren't good enough. I just do RGB with a DSLR. You should find plenty to point you in the right direction with a search though. Sorry about that :)

Hi Doug. Great tutorials, I use them heavily - whenever I get clear skies, which have been very rare in Denmark over the winter. I was wondering, when you say a lot of exposures, how many are you refering to? How many did you use for the image of M42, that you use here? Regards :-)

Hi :) That image was 30 x 4 second subs for the core and 84 x 60 second subs for the rest. How many you need depends on a number of factors: how noisy the camera is, the quality of your skies, the brightness of the object your imaging etc etc. If you're using a DSLR and quite long exposures then the image will be noisy so you'll need to do a lot of subs to reduce the noise and enable you to stretch the image enough to bring out the detail. I'd suggest a minimum of 50 with a DSLR, but that's just my opinion :) I've done images using hundreds of subs in the past, but there comes a point when it's not worth throwing any more subs at it - that's when you know you've reached the limit that your skies will allow i.e. the light pollution in your area will only allow the camera to see so much detail, and no more! Hope that helps a bit :)

Doug ~ why are you not using the correct tools for Astrophotgraphy ~ or is it that Photoshop / Lightroom do it all anyway? and its all a myth!!

Hi Chris. Sorry I haven't got around to looking at your vid yet - I will soon :) "The correct tools" - interesting phrase :) There are no correct tools mate, you use what you prefer to use. I assume you're referring to Pixinsight; I've tried three trial versions of PI over the years, and I haven't been impressed. There's nothing in it that Ps can't do, and it's about the most unintuitive package I've ever seen - all adds to the mystery and allure I suppose :)

TopMan ~ you just told me all I need to know ..my suspicions are correct and I shall go about it using PS only .. I have watched a few vids on the other tools, and I am thinking why are they doing all this ..is it that PS doesnt !! Cheers mate
