Program Notes: Asturias was originally composed for the piano in the early 1890s. Albéniz used rolled chords to evoke the strumming of a guitar. The piece was first published in 1892 as the opening section, “Preludio,” to a three-movement suite called Chants d’Espagne. Two years after Albéniz's death, the German publisher Hofmeister released a collection of Albéniz’s work and gave the piece the title of Asturias. Despite being called Asturias which is a northern region of Spain, the piece powerfully evokes the distinctive flamenco and gypsy music of Andalusia, the southernmost region of the country.
