Now the AX86U Pro supports VLAN with firmware version later than version 3.0.0.6.102_xxxx or above. Some models provide beta firmware (9.0.0.6.102_xxxx) to experience this feature.

I was looking at buying the RT-AX86U Pro to replace my old AC86 however ended up buying the GT-AXE11000 instead. Can’t wait for it to arrive

If you can do non wi fi gaming the RT-AX868 is much better bang for the dollar and runs way cooler cpu wise. = last longer less strain on soldering points. But if you are stuck with wifi only then the GT might have an edge in some homes.

I’m looking for a new router and was thinking this would be ideal. But I definitely want a guest network feature. And decent VLAN support are a must. Have these issues been resolved?
@SamBondor
4 ай бұрын
I just powered the RT-AX86U Pro to check if there is a new firmware available and I noticed that there is a beta one called 9.0.0.6.102.4856. I installed it and it does add the VLAN and the Guest Network Pro. It's probably not as stable as on the other routers or maybe it's perfectly fine and it's a way for ASUS to justify the existence of other slightly more expensive routers. I gave it a quick test and it seems to be working fine for now.
@ThePeteW

@@SamBondor Thanks for checking. I notice that beta is over 3 years old. The latest release on the Asus site is 3.0.0.6.102_34312 from 9th May 2024. That mentions VLAN too. Not sue I understand the f/w release numbering give the beta was 9.X and this 3.X! But sunds like there should not be an issue for my purposes.
@SamBondor

@@ThePeteW I saw that the beta is from last year, not three years ago, but yeah, it just shows how much ASUS cares to bring these features to its newer routers. Then again, they're not very polished and need far more work until it can be called proper VLAN implementation.

I am looking at the Asus tuf-ax6000 at the moment sold here in the united kingdom. If im not mistaken, this router has kind of the same specs as the rt-ax88u. Do you know anything about the tuf model?
@SamBondor
Ай бұрын
I did test its lesser sibling, the TUF-AX4200. What I like the most about the TUF-AX6000 (and the AX4200) is its support for OpenWRT, but I can't really comment about its WiFi performance.
@erkyperky1387
Ай бұрын
@@SamBondor Thank you for the reply, much appreciated. The TUF-AX6000 is $230 and the RT-AX88U Pro is $311 here in the uk. I mostly want the router for range as i live in a house thats got thick concrete walls and even though they are very similar in specs the RT-AX88U Pro might have stronger signal, what do you think?
@SamBondor
Ай бұрын
@@erkyperky1387 I did check how similar the two routers are and they're quite a bit different. The TUF-AX6000 relies on Mediatek, while the RT-AX88U Pro uses Broadcom. Which is most likely the reason for the price difference. Don't get me wrong though, the Mediatek chipsets are more than decent. Probably the RT-AX88U Pro will have a better range, but I don't think it's going to be a 100$ worth of difference, so I would go with the cheaper option.

@@alexmand8003I did a separate video about the current state of the VLANs and the Guest Network Pro. But to answer your question, it works more like a means to completely isolate the traffic from the main network, with very little to no control between VLANs.

No, both include it right now. A recent firmware update has enabled it on the RT-AX86U Pro.

@@eddtru You're better off with the Merlin implementation. The 'OEM' VLAN is still in its early stage and it's barely more than client isolation.

I just know the Asus RT-AC68U BLOWS CHUNKS. Terrible Wi-Fi range. I have a much older DIR-878 that gives me Wi-Fi from outside my house about 80 yards away... and my house is brick lol. Makes me worried about any of these Asus RT-AC/AX routers. And I am an Asus guy. But if it ain't ROG STRIX, I ain't getting it. The D-Link DIR-878 is a dual-band AC1900 MU-MIMO Wi-Fi router that offers impressive performance and features. CPU Specs: The DIR-878 is powered by a dual-core 880MHz CPU It’s a dual-band router capable of speeds of up to 600 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 1,300 Mbps on the 5GHz band And somehow, it outperforms these newer routers like that RT-AC68U. I just know because my mom has one. My router has all 4 Ethernet ports in use, with one cable going to a switch with 5 ports in use. I have a 24/7 security camera system running on it, I can smoothly remote access my PC from my phone all while streaming video to my TV through my Plex server. I think hers would die doing that. Not to mention I don't think I've restarted the router in like 6-8 months now lol. When I did, it didn't "need" it, I just did it because I was bored. Sorry, that RT-AC68U has left a bad taste in my mouth for Asus routers that look like that. I am planning on getting an Asus STRIX with Wi-Fi 6e and 2.5Gbps ports, though. MAYBE even a Wi-Fi 7 model and slap an Asus PCI-e Wi-Fi 7 card in my PC. (It already comes with Wi-Fi 6e/BT 5.3 on the mobo). But, honestly, I don't care about Wi-Fi. Ethernet is king. I use Ethernet whenever and wherever possible. More secure, stable and fast.

What's the point in having a 2.5Gbit LAN with only a 1Gbit WAN? It's nonsense.
@SamBondor

I mean.. you can use the 2.5GbE port for WAN as well. I suppose the idea is mainly to transfer data faster in the LAN, such as when using a NAS.
