Del button does not have "normal" place in my opinion, it's just the backspace that is obliged to be above the backslash/vertical bar. I have a computer that places the del key over the additional Home/PgUp/PgDn column so that it is the right-uppermost key, wouldn't have it any other way -- would prefer the additional column of key just be absent instead.

Very nice review. I would however like to add that laptops with poor cooling can be used for gaming if you're willing to go with a cooling stand. I have the HP spectre x360 13 and in normal laptop mode it can get really hot during gaming but as soon as I put it on a cooling stand the temperatures drop and the fps goes back to normal. It would however limit you in where you can game but for a student it would be great imo.

This is best laptop I've ever owned. It doesn't underperform on battery, unlike nearly any other gaming laptop. It's a laptop; you're not gonna be on AC the majority of the time. The screen is accurate, and touchscreen at 1080p (which means you get full gaming performance unlike the other OEMs which include a 4K touch panel for zero meaningful reason) It has a dedicated microSD card slot, meaning you wouldn't need to carry around an adapter for full SD (No reason to use a full size SD in 2019 anyway) Performance is solid. There is rarely any throttling in the first place, you get what you pay for - i7-7700HQ performance alongside a 1050Ti. The speaker also is the best I've ever found in a laptop: bass, highs, clarify, volume. I've used it as a standalone speaker occasionally. I feel as if my upgrade to a Razer Blade 2018 is almost a downgrade. I wish that this laptop had a brighter screen, and at least a 1650, though. Does anyone know where to get a replacement touchscreen panel for this?
@vincentdesrosiers5176
6 жыл бұрын
Wait. The VD model does not come with a 1050 Ti, just a regular 1050. You should update your description. Edit: Ok I'm confused. I clicked on the Amazon link and it shows a black model, but on ultrabookreview.com they say the VE comes only in blue and with a 1050 Ti! They also say the VD(black) comes with a i5.

So you are saying that a none gaming laptop that gives OVER 50fps on ULTRA settings on modern games shouldn't be considered for gaming at $1800 price range??? What? Ok lets be clear here, NO laptop is perfect. Even a MacbookPro with better build quality offers TERRIBLE performance in comparison to this one and you are spending almost $3,000 Every laptop has flaws but the Zenbook Pro has more Pros that outshine the Cons.

Hi Dave, Loved your interview. I didn't even know this model and despite your negative points I bought this laptop and I game on it. I bought the 4K-1050TI (for the 4gb) version and it indeed thermal Throttles without a doubt. Tbh the results after throttling were still good for the kind of games I play (Diablo 3, Hots, GTA5). After undervolting the thermal issue is completely gone and the FPS is even 40% better. Important note, even at default specs the fan noise is still very acceptable. Not that it matters since I have a 60hz screen so I cap the FPS at 60 anyway. I like to thank you for the interview because I'm very happy with it and I wouldn't have bought an Asus if I wouldn't have seen this review. Go collect your bonus with Asus! :)

I got this laptop (the non-touch variant) a few days ago and this is my experience so far: - the build is better than i expected. a lot of reviewers have bashed the build quality of this thing and it's a bit better than they made it out to be: it's rigid despite the plastic mid-frame and doesn't flex if you bend it. however, my unit didn't sit flush on the table and wobbled just a tad so there's that. - performance-wise, i used it for software development, media consumption and browsing and had no issues with it . the fans run constantly and can become annoying in a quiet room - what is also annoying is the coil whine. yes, it's got it and it's not ashamed to show it. - screen suffers from bleeding and clouding (and i found a dead pixel) - touchpad is awesome - keyboard is good (better than on the dell xps 15 i had) - speakers have a full sound to them which i like all in all, i think i will return it because of the screen and coil whine but mostly because of the screen (almost every laptop has some degree of coil whine so there's no escaping that).

I'm so fking mad at Asus and how they handled the ux550 I was excited about this from the very first leaks talking about this (and back then even mentioning a gtx 1060 LOL) Not only took it ages to actually come out, way later than all the competitors (XPS15 7th gen i7, yoga 720), but they jinxed one of the biggest selling points for me. I was hoping to get a gaming capable laptop which doesn't look like its designed for fucking 12 year olds. Closer to release they were talking about a 3 heat pipe design and now we get some undersized cooling and thermal throttling like a bitch. Like, are you even trying ASUS? This is supposed to be your flagship laptop and you can't properly cool a 45watt HQ CPU and a 1050 TI when MSI (albeit barely) manages a 1060 in a similar sized chassis? Oh, and to add insult to injury, where i live you don't even offer the Full HD touchscreen / 1050 ti but expect me to pay the SAME FUCKING 1800€ for non-touch and the 1050 WELL FUCK YOU TOO ASUS. I'm done with you /rant over
@diddymies

Angelo Merte why the fck people want to play games on productivity laptops. Yes gaming laptops have ugly colors but you cant blame asus not making this zenbook pro for gaming. Its a productivity laptop. Gaming laptops are designed with better cooling systems(alot of air ventiles, which would totally ruin zenbook design) True gamers makes a desktop for gaming and kids gets gaming laptops from their parents. The market is so much bigger for younger kids , thats why they make gaming things colored , cuz younger people buys them more.

I personally would prefer a matte screen and I am pretty annoyed that it is not available in the US... Glossy screen from Asus is BAD and SUPER GLOSSY (may be better this gen, but still skeptical), especially when the brightness is just 270 sth... If you have used the glossy version of UX501 you will not be so earnest about the glossy UX550, trust me... And as Dave mentioned, you can always turn to Aero 15X : )
@ArtifactSkyline

Well I can personally say that if you were considering the yoga 720, it is well worth the money. Asn long as your gaming needs aren't to high demand the 1050 can handle them just fine. It is silent under almost any load besides extreme video playback, photo editing, and of course gaming. The fit and finish of the chassis is not the best, the bottom panel sticks out on one side more than the other. But the hinge has held up well to a solid month of daily use. I would personally suggest the 7700hq 1050 16gb ram 512gb ssd and 1080p touch screen but that depend on your budget. Happy notebook shopping.

So, I’ve bought this laptop, with i5-7300HQ. After undervolting by only 120 mV I have stable 75-81 degrees on CPU after 20-30 minutes of Witcher 3. It blinked once to 85-ish, literally for a second, and that’s the maximum. The GPU doesn’t throttle seriously as well. It’s constantly 79 degrees, 99% load, 1405-1530 MHz. Btw, it’s enough for easy 60 fps on medium which is totally fine even if it does slightly throttle.

Writing this on a dell 7577. It's all its hyped up to be. Only problem is that the 1060 max-q drivers aren't up to date yet, the arrow keys are a little awkward, and it is just a tad too big (I know it isn't a thin and light.) The build quality is amazing with zero keyboard flex and the plastic lid isn't the best at keeping clear of fingerprints, but is significantly better than the previous 7567. The battery life hasn't been a problem but I rarely spend more than 3 hours gaming without being plugged in. The nvidia experience software does a really good job of optimizing battery life without bringing the settings down too low when on battery, but when plugged in it lets loose and gets 100+ fps on the highest settings on Shadow of Mordor. It runs completely silent until the 1060 is needed but is quiet enough under load I was able to get away with some Borderlands 2 (Maxed) in the back of my health class at school. (Wireless xbox remote for the win!!) Overall my time with the Dell Inspiron 7577 has been great. It runs all my favorite games seamlessly and isn't so aggressively "gamery" that I'd be shamed when I bring it to school.

Caleb Norton thanks for sharing. How is the screen quality? Do you think it is tier 1 quality like razer, xps 15 or this acer pro ?

I love the fact that I just sat through the whole review and you didn't even mention the size of the bloody laptop! I get it...it's probably 15 inches, but you'd think that's the first thing you'd mention instead of bitching about the micro SD card slot for 25 seconds! You're one of the last couple of "Tech reviewers" whom I still have some respect for, so don't slip too please, focus on the important stuff and drop gimmicks, no one cares about screen flex when you press it, but we all care to know what size that screen is. Just as an example.

Daniel Lehotský, Isn't it the job of a tech reviewer to introduce the product to all people? I for one never heard of this product. And I do tend to keep up with such news. And yes I could gauge that is probably a 15 inch from looking at it in the first shot, but it could also be a small 17 incher. Stop being such a blind fanboy. I like Dave too, but that was an obvious omission, and I don't want him to take this channel for granted like so many other tech reviewers after they get "big".

Dell’s 7577 is a better deal than this , better ports , better thermal , better gpu , 4k screen option , everything good , if you want a non gamer looking beast to do your task in office scenario, then dell is the best looking , plain and simple

Get the XPS 15. Got it. No but seriously seems like a decent offering. I get what you're saying about the MicroSD slot. It's easy to convert down in size, not up. A full size SD slot could easily be converted/adapted to use MicroSD without a dongle.

Thanks for the awesome review Dave! This laptop has been long awaited for a review! I am glad that I chose my Dell XPS 15 over the Zenbook Pro. I've had no issues with it so far. There were some issues with the keyboard flexing in the earliest Zenbook Pro models, but it seems like ASUS did not resolve issue. Needless to say, I am disappointed with ASUS because I was expecting a lot more from them. If you're out there still looking for a similar laptop, the Dell XPS 15 is amazing.

A laptop cooler with a fan blowing towards the bottom would really help the heat. If Asus are smart, the entire aluminum bottom panel should be able to help dissipate heat.

This was upsetting to see, considering how highly you seemed to think of the smaller model that uses a mx150. That being said I'll probably be buying that model instead, thanks for the awesome reviews, you genuinely make it easier when shopping around for laptops. Keep it up 👌👌👌

I have that same computer, and it does handle most games well ! I bought this laptop for digital art and photography, but I do game on it! Elder Scrolls Online runs smooth on ultra, and Vampyr also runs well. Must triple A with no mods are comfortable to run on this PC. The fans are a little loud, but it has not really overheated for me. I absolutely love the Zenbook Pro

Hi Dave, short question: What would you take? A or B? A: Asus Zenbook Pro UX550VD (1170,- Bucks) i5 7300HQ - Nvidia GTX1050 - 8GB RAM - 512GB SSD - metal casing B: Asus Vivobook S510UN (900,- Bucks) i7 8550U - Nvidia MX150 - 16GB RAM - 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD - plastic casing (plus an used monitor with better colors for the remaining money) I us my PC mainly for normal tasks, photo- and audio-editing and sometimes for video-editing and -rendering. My only problem with the Zenbook Pro is the soldered on RAM.. Thank's a lot and greetz from munich!

Wow, you should work for ASUS! I've been gravitating towards this laptop and not by my own free will. I'll be upgrading from a 501V. I'm not interested in gaming, but am looking for something that handles my daily needs but also can perform when I need it (pix4D).
