Thanks for the video. I watched this video before I started and decided to do the BIOS update first. Which worked fine. I then created the the USB stick with the Microsoft installation tool and found that it worked without having to use Rufus. I am not sure if doing the BIOS update first made the difference but just thought I'd mention it because using Rufus adds complexity for beginners that might be unnecessary. But I'm really glad I watched your video first because I would not have expected the keyboard and trackpad to stop working. I have a wireless USB keyboard with a built in trackpad that I used. Therefore allowing me to only need one USB port for both mouse and keyboard functionality. Everything else was pretty easy actually. It's worth pointing out that this laptop has an integrated card reader and it might make things go more smoothly to download all the drivers that will be needed ahead of time and put them on an SD card (Though I'm not actually sure if that card slot works before you install the chipset driver). But yeah. Definitely a worthwhile thing to do since this laptop came with Windows 8.1 and Microsoft is trying to force people to buy Windows 11 computers. No sense in trashing this unit when it is still useful. Also, I knew this PC had a 32 bit processor but I kind of forgot so I'd have probably downloaded the 64 bit version. This laptop always did have quirky limitations like that but it was $200 (US) brand new when I bought it so....

Nice comment - thanks! I get what you say about Rufus. I decided that it was better to take a bit longer to ensure the setup stick is bootable and 32bit rather than make it and then find out later that it doesn’t work. It also means people get to use Rufus - which might come in handy as a skill they can use later. It offer some special USB creation tweaks that are pretty great - especially with Win11. If you’ve not played with it then take a look. The BIOS update can be done at anytime - I did it after the initial installation because the sound didn’t work and I spotted a BIOS update and installed it just in case. And the sound worked after doing it! 😜 I think pretty much everything needs the chipset drivers to work but as I don’t use SD cards I didn’t have one handy to use. It’s a pretty cool device so I was determined to get it working with Win10. It won’t support Win11 as there isn’t a 32bit version of that - so it’s great until 2025 when MS drop Win10. Maybe the next version of Windows will get 32bit support, but I’m not expecting it to. As shame as this is a pretty cute computer.

@@sterntechdaddy Oh yeah. Rufus is great. I've used it many times for lots of stuff. It's definitely a utility that pretty much everyone who ever needs to do things like this should learn to use. I just decided to try doing the install without it for this because I was curious to see if it would work. I must confess that I did expect it to fail and to have to use Rufus anyway. For a moment, I thought it wasn't gonna work because when I went to boot the stick, there was this odd hiccup and it kind of seemed to stick there for a moment but then went into the familiar Windows setup screen. Nevertheless, just wanted to acknowledge your video as this is an older PC and I've always had a hard time finding good info on doing anything with it ever since I've had it. I was very nervous about trying to install Windows 10 on it because I didn't want to end up losing the Windows 8.1 install (or possibly bricking it if the BIOS update failed) if anything went wrong. Your video game me the confidence to try it and the information I needed to know what to expect. Very happy to have it done. 👍 It's also worth pointing out (for anyone who has one of these) that the battery is very easy to replace in this and there's a video somewhere that shows how it's done. The replacement batteries are relatively cheap. I just did that a few months ago and wasn't planning on even trying Windows 10 until I heard they'd stopped supporting Windows 8.1. Anyway, I almost want to recommend trying to get the OEM battery if possible but I don't know if it's available. The one I got was a knockoff. I think I saw one that claimed to be the OEM one but it was like twice the price and I thought better of it since it was getting close to a third of the price of the PC when it was new.

I use a USB port extender and plug in the mouse, keyboard, and speakers. Windows 10 was a lot of fun, and outperformed Debian by a long shot graphically. I even tried my favorite game, Age of of Empires HD!!! It slowed to crawl and nearly croaked, but just the same, it ran! Keep up the great work Nic, I was ill and did not have the time to tip you. I have a nasty VOIP virus that needs serious fixing too! These machines are being converted to optimized Windows 10 Fractal Art, to be hung on my walls. With a KZitem subscription. No adverts. At the same time, I run sports charts for my sports trading. Super nice! All Intranet soon enough. Puppy lets you run many an old Windows machine on USB. So I do both! When windows 10 was first released and you had a device that didn't have a Windows 10 driver then the Windows 8.x driver was worth a try - and it often worked. Now, since Windows 10 has been around for many years, there is usually a proper Windows 10 driver available. Check the Optional section of Windows Update and you'll probably find them... :)

If you’ve just done it then you should know that Microsoft have recently stopped Windows 10 activations using Windows 7 keys. The activation will fail if the old Windows 7 key has never been previously used to activate Windows 10. Essentially, old activations are still valid, but new attempts using Windows 7 keys from CoA stickers won’t activate. If this is what’s happening to your laptop then you’ll need to get a valid key - there are various websites that offer keys at low prices but I’m not able to put links in here. 🙂

Activation should work with Windows 8.1 if it's been previously activated. But Windows 10 will be better. Unfortunately the recent change measn that if Windows 10 hasn't previously been activated with a Windows 8.x key then it won't now activate. Similarly for any older Windows 7 key - they can no longer be used to activate Windows 10 either.

What version of the chipset drivers are you using? I had no problems with the X205T featured in the video. It might be possible to unpack the chipset drivers installer to get the individual drivers. Or search for the hardware ID from Device Manager to hopefully find a specific driver. There’s also a chance that the version of Windows that you’re trying to install is newer than the one I used. You also have to use the 32bit version of Windows 10, but I think it crashes when you try and install if you’ve accidentally created the 64bit Windows 10 install USB.

I'd just use Edge... not because it's better than the rest, but simply because it won't add additional background processes. Chrome, for example, has additional updater and crash report processes running even when you're not using it. Remember that Microsoft have 2GB as a minimum spec for the 64-bit version of Windows and 1GB for the 32-bit version and the 32-bit version has a maximum of 4GB anyway. As this device doesn't support 64-bit at all your only option is to tweak and reduce background processes and/or limit the number of simultaneous applications you're using at once. It does work quite well provided you're conscious of it's limitations and what place in the market it was designed for. Or try Linux on it... which I've never attempted to do after all the hassle of getting Windows on it.... 😂

It's not something I'd attempt... it looks like the only version they made had 2GB of RAM - with no other options. Presumably because of the 32-bit OS limitations of the CPU, so I would expect upgrading the RAM to be impossible. But you can disable quite a lot of background tasks - especially the antivirus. After all the tweaks I normally do to the computers that get too close to me, I found it OK to use for casual tasks like web browsing and email. These tweaks are in my videos about setting up new laptops - and they do make a massive difference if you've not seen them.
