@Guitargate Hey Michael, I've been a fan of your channel for a while now. I really loved your videos on The Dead and Holsdsworth, but man, I am excited for you about coming into Elliott Smith. I've already commented about how I feel about his playing, so I figured I'd give me a suggestion. If you want to see just how good his guitar playing is, and also get a sense of how it drives the music itself. I highly recommend two albums. 'Figure 8' which is a big budget, big studio album but really is a good window into the type of miraculous things he heard and was capable of composing and arranging. Then there is 'New Moon' which is more of a compilation album but of tunes that the recordings of were originally unreleased. Songs like "New Disaster" and "Placeholder" really stick out as great examples of his guitar work, showcased in stripped-downwn context. Once again, enjoy your journey into Elliott Smith. I listened to him and practically nothing else for five years straight and he changed my guitar playing forever. Good luck on your Elliott Smith journey. If you ever need help with what to explore next -since his discography is enormormous, the people in this community will steer you properly.

Holy shit, I'm legitimately very happy for you for finally coming to Elliott. As a guitarist his ornate picking style, his use of secondary dominants, his use of # 11s are so cleverly used. That's not even mentioning his gobsmacking lyricism. His discography is going to fuck you up.

Elliott Smith is my favorite songwriter of all time, and his songs still hit me like they just hit you, even 21 years after I first heard St. Ide's Heaven. For intricate guitar playing, there are a lot of options, but Angeles is probably the most interesting all around song you could pick to do a video on. It showcases everything he does in a really clean package with a gorgeous picking pattern, and it's just a beautiful song in every way. The most amazing thing about Elliott is that he never phoned in a song. There aren't any bad ones. They're not all perfect, but they were all written for a reason, with genuine conviction, and I don't think the exclusion of any song on any album would improve that album, which I can't say about basically any other musician ever. I'll still give a couple recommendations though, songs which I'm pretty sure have embedded themselves into my literal dna. Twilight Happiness St. Ide's Heaven High Times Say Yes Miss Misery (I prefer the version from New Moon to the movie version) Love your channel. Getting to watch you discover my favorite artist and respond the way you did made my morning, and really helped bridge some of that feeling of isolation which both you and Elliott were speaking about in this video, and which has been hitting me really acutely lately, since I've lost both of my parents in the last year and a half. I'm doing really well overall, and it's been little moments of connection, both in my personal life and with the media I've been coming across lately which have been reminding me that we're all together in that we're all alone, so we've got to look out for each other and listen to each other. Thanks for doing what you do. I feel better understood because you made this video. Hopefully, my comment can do the same for you.

FINALLY. Your life is deeper and better now mate. I found him in June, he is now my favourite artist/musician of all time by a mile. Love his music wish he was still here. The community surrounding him to this day is also healthy.

Watched so many of your videos…. Your ability to breakdown the brilliance of a song, what that sentiment means as a person and then make me feel hope and connection. I hope your friends appreciate what a special insight you have.

I've been listening to Elliott for 20 years, so it's wonderful to see new people find his music. You should do Stupidity Tries next; it's full band and he rips on the solo.

A beautiful video Michael. I feel very privileged to have seen you share your very personal reaction to hearing Elliott Smith for the first time. In spite of him not being a household name, he is a lot of people's favourite artist, for good reason. It's beautiful music telling you terrible things. I don't think he could write a bad song if he tried, so I'd recommend listening to any of his albums. You won't be disappointed!

Thank you for this reaction! I’m currently dealing with this situation. I believe in my art but choose to put it off for my addiction. I’m getting older and it seems time is running out. I love Elliott Smith’s music and not enough people react to his wonderfully sad music. Thank you again for your reaction! You really nail it.

Michael! Thank you for finally getting around to Elliott. He is the gift that never stops giving. Some great live performances from him are him performing “Miss Misery” or “Son of Sam” on the Conan O’Brien show or him performing “Clementine” on an early morning talk show. All of them are phenomenal songs and performances.

You’re about 3 years younger than me… I’m not sure how you missed Elliott Smith all these years but I’m so glad to hear you came around. I first heard Ellliott Smith in the fall of 99, my drawing teacher in college would play it almost everyday until I finally asked him who it was. The first song I remember gravitating towards was ‘Angeles’ off of Either/Or… To this day, it’s still an amazing piece of songwriting. Elliott is one of my all time favorite musicians, I always return to his music and I always rekindle a new found appreciation for his music often finding intricacies I didn’t notice before. I put him up there with Lennon and McCartney, Dylan, Neil Young, and Townes van Zandt… he’s never fully gotten the recognition he deserves. Definitely one of the best songwriters in the last 30 years….

He was such a gifted songwriter. I remember one writer saying something like "no one suffers as gorgeously as Elliot Smith." That was probably in the review for XO in Rolling Stone. I suggest featuring Sweet Adeline or Tomorrow Tomorrow from XO.

I love Elliot Smith. The day he died I will never forget how much of a loss I felt. That we would never get music from a master again. Thank you so much for spotlighting a forgotten treasure and I look forward to more reactions. Rest in peace E.S. ❤

Angeles, Independence Day, Condor Ave. and Tomorrow, Tomorrow are all amazing guitar songs… Elliott is the lost treasure of the 90’s and early 2000’s for both acoustic guitarists and songwriters.

The potential of the best songwriter/performer to communicate with many people with the fewest words and chords is the sign of, not only genius but also frequently a troubled soul. It’s often these people who have the potential to touch our lives the deepest. This is what makes the difference between just another singer/musician and an artist who can touch people’s lives.

Oh man, I can't tell you how fast I clicked on this video. ES has impacted my life in ways that I don't know how to describe, but his music is exquisite. He was an incredible guitarist and that and his overall musicianship is really showcased on songs like Tomorrow Tomorrow, Waltz #2, Angeles, Condor Avenue, and Miss Misery to stay with his more well known songs. I know I'll be clicking immediately if I see another of these!

You can't go wrong with Elliott Smith. I have never heard an Elliott Smith song that I did not like. I generally am not a big fan of acoustic singer songwriters. But Elliot Smith is definitely an exception to that. Your focus was more on the story line than the musicality. It gave me a new perspective. Because I have always thought that the music was 'off-the-charts' good, and never really gave the lyrics much thought.

Years ago, I discovered Eilliott Smith, he had such a way with painting pictures of beautiful sorrow. It's hard to listen to his music, as beautiful as it is, it transports me to a place I'm not sure I can allow myself go back to. But this was great, thanks Michael!

Not going to lie, when you picked up the guitar I thought oh here we go, this is the bit where they show off "look I can learn it in one go" kinda thing, but thankfully I couldn't have been more wrong, and your heartfelt reflection on the songs lyrics was really interesting and insightful! I just really wish I had just discovered Elliott for the first time - I don't think it's an exaggeration to say your life will change because of his music (mine certainly did)! I really hope you do more of his tracks...FWIW I vote for Angeles!

I love how in tune you are with a song’s energy. Sometimes it’s fun and bombastic and you jump right in to trying to play along. Other times you sit back and close your eyes and I can tell you’re really thinking about and feeling the song. The excitement is there either way but it really makes it feel like it’s about the artist and the performance, and not about you. Dig it.

Elliott is the best songwriter of the last 30-40 years, he was a one man Beatle who could play rachmaninoff on piano like it was nothing, his sense of melody and harmony is unmatched, he had the ability to balance major and minor to the point that the two become so ambiguous the tonal centre of the song was at times almost “keyless”, all while writing some of the most honest lyrics that felt so personal and specific yet could apply to anyones life. It’s astounding. Either or (not the album, the phrase) really does describe his music perfectly.
