While the two aircraft have similar performance the A-29 carries twice the weapon payload. It's also been tested in combat in many countries. There is no comparison. The Tucano is the superior platform. Our service members deserve the best equipment, period.

The T-6 II was developed from the original Swiss Pilatus PC-9 ( and there are quite a few engineering differences, made for the T6 II, at the USAF's request) which came from the PC-7, which actually does have a combat record and is still available to buy. Pilatus get around Swiss weapons export laws by selling you an airframe to which you can attach weapons systems at your home base. The US and Pilatus came to an agreement about selling PC-9s versus T6 IIs but, in essence, the US will throw it's weight around to achieve sales of the T-6 II and have been known to pressurise Allies to buy the T 6 II instead of the PC-9. Also, companies like Beech will file complaints or appeals when they lose selection competitions. It's become a standard tactic of US companies when a foreign company gets a sniff of winning a US contract. This doesn't mean that foreign, non-US companies don't do the same when competitions occur in Europe. Anyone who has ever dealt with French or Italian aerospace companies will know what I mean......the RAF Tucano was built in Northern Ireland as a political job saving measure. There were something like 1200 engineering changes made to the original EMB-312 so that it would meet RAF requirements and the Garrett engine was fitted to achieve a particular time-to-climb requirement. Kuwait bought some later as part of a UK arms deal. The Shorts Tucano was not armed for the RAF, because they did their gunnery training on Hawks, so they lost out on the ability to sell armed Tucanos to potential customers, well before the advent of the Super Tucano, but Kuwait did get an armed version. Every other user of the original Emb-312 found that it was perfectly good for training future fighter pilots with the original PT-6 engine ;-) Allegedly, the Shorts Tucanos, of which the Shorts workforce were proud, were so "hand built" that the RAF found that individual airframes were longer or shorter than others and that it was difficult to exchange hull and wing panels across the fleet.

The T-6 is a designed trainer, and the military will continue using it for that mission, but the A-29 is a combat mission capable aircraft by design, just look at the difference in the landing gear, that will tell any aircraft savvy person everything they need to know.

@@1anre It's not a very robust design comparatively speaking, just look at the diameter of the struts compared to the A-29 not to mention the wheels and brakes, which are all smaller than the A-29. it was never meant to haul heavy ordnance loads of bombs and Aux fuel tanks from dirt runways because it was designed for training, not combat missions.

This guy has a bad case of sour grapes, the T6 wasn't even designed by Beechcraft, its a Pilatus aircraft, designed as a trainer. Look at aviation history, very few training aircraft have ever made the leap from trainer to combat mission capable machines, the design principles are completely different, if beechcraft wants to sell the military combat aircraft, learn how to build combat aircraft!!!

Embraer Super Tucanos have extremely extensive combat experience in Colombia where they have killed many top ranking FARC and ELN leaders. The AT-6 is an inferior craft that has done nothing of the sort. Literally The A-29 wiped out much of the FARC's top infrastructure. It's an extremely capable aircraft. The Super Tucano has better weapon systems, better capability (longer range) and is a bit faster than the AT-6. The Super Tucano has seen combat experience for both Brazil (against traffickers) and Colombia (Against major rebel groups). The AT-6 is completely unproven and seems to be rather shoddy looking. I realize that this argument is about AT-6 versus Super Tucano for Afghanistan. Afghanistan would be better suited for the Super Tucano. Super Tucanos are known to be rugged and capable even in harsh climates. The AT-6 has no such record and is unproven.

Peter Stamps Tucano means "Toucan", name given to the forest bird by brazilian indian tribes. The A - 10 Thunderbolt has a powerful canon and its structure manage fire that an A - 29 can't. But, the A - 29 can perform 70 % of missions of A - 10 with very low cost. One hour of flight of A - 29 costs 700 to 1000 dollars. One hour of flight of A - 10 costs 12000 to 17000 dollars. An A - 29 can be 12 hours flying without refueling if it is with two new support tanks on wings. The plane is brazilian, the engine is an american Pratt - Whitney from a Canada factory with 1600 hp. The panel electronic is from Israel. It works with several armament from US too. Embraer is the brazilian air force maker, but it became private since 1994. There's several investors in Embraer and the four biggest investors are Brandes Investment Partners (US, 14,4%), Mondrian Investment Partners (United Kingdon, 10,1%), BNDESPar (Brazil, 5,4%) and the Blackrock (US; 5,0%). As you can see, almost 20 % of company belongs to two americans companies, with the first and fourth position. All A - 29 that US is using in US or in other countries are made in US by Embraer and Sierra Nevada, an american company. More than 90 % of workers are americans. Then, is a good deal the A - 29, remembering that almost 20 % of profit goes to just two american companies and the engine and several missiles come from american companies that get its part of profit. That explain why US has used it in some missions. Watch that several US planes work with the Canada Pratt - Whitney engines. Sometimes is better construct a car, a plane, with participation of more than one company.

Maybe this is more about aesthetics than performance. From most of what I know (which admittedly isn't much) these aircraft perform well and are close competitors. That said, the Tucano just looks better to me. There are plenty of psychology studies about how people select things that look better, and knowing military pilots like I do I'm confident they react that way all too often. My best man was a T-38 instructor pilot and I always had a hard time dragging him out of the store without buying all the goodies in the "impulse ailse". LOL

And it's assembled in Florida, with a US made motor and many components. The jobs are not going to be taken away. But what might be taken away is the life of american pilots if they fly a worse machine. Tucano is more reliable.

In Argentina it was decided to buy the AT-6 despite the long experiencie that the Argentine pilots had flyng with the old tucanos as trainer, Argentina had one of the best COIN of national manufacture the FMA IA-58 PUCARA that was tested in combate against the Castro/Guevaris guerrillas in the Argentine jungles and the Malvinas Waed as close support and hunting helicopters, it was also in Colombia destroying the FARC guerrillas, they are still active as support to the infantry and light bomber, which demostrate their usefulnes despite the years that have passed, if Argentina had modernized then they would be at the level of the SUPER TUCANOS

The AT-6; - cheaper (with same mission equipment) - lighter - faster - better integrated - bigger payload - longer range The Super Tucano is an inferior design. The only reason it got the contract is because the manufacturing base was more complete, and the first units could be shipped faster. Also, the DoD has a budget that it MUST spend, or else it gets cut. To secure their funding for the next calender year they threw money away on a more expensive piece of equipment.

The super tucano is proven, reliable and well capable for the missions required. Beechcraft can't use the exscuse that the super tucano is not creating American jobs, 70 percent of the tucano is American parts and 30 percent is brisilian. Beechcraft is just a sore loser for not getting the contract. Go the Tucano i say.....

USA invaded Afghanistan to overthrow Taliban and is now taking measures to maintain the new pro-USA goverment there, and one of the ways is to enable their Armed Forces. If USA just leaves without doing this, it is pretty obvious Taliban will be able to seize power again. If this happens, the whole intervention in that country, since 2001, would turn useless. So, instead of "giving away", you must consider this as actually being an investment the US is doing to keep a pro-USA government in the region.

They almost did! A Piper PA-48 Enforcer. The old mustang liquid cooled engines tended to seize up if hit so P-47 thunderbolts were used more in that role. If not for the A-10 thunderbolt the Turbo Mustang III could've been a reality.

The Super Tucano is the grandson of the Spitfire, which existed at the same time the P51 did, and was better than the P51 at its Griffon Mk XX series. Also, the A29 is proven in MODERN WARFARE, the P51 is proven on Pre-Cold War and Early Cold War-era warfare. Clear diference, smartass.

I know, it’s crazy, and the Super Tweet isn’t made anymore. But… it was superior in every way except the range. A37 could fly faster, higher, greater MTOW, greater rate of climb, smaller footprint, etc. For a very similar mission set! US makes em better!

Comparing a trainer with a combat aircraft is a joke, this guy has deep pockets. Good luck to the pilots when they are under fire on an AT-6C. But he is right, choosing the AT6 will create more jobs in america, especially for pilots.

Would someone please correct me, assuming I'm wrong. I read a while ago both the Tucano/Super Tucano & the AT-6 are both based off the Pilatus PC? They look like Pilatus PC-6, 7, 21.... The Pilatus is sold around the world, but it's sold/pushed as more as a trainer and also sold to civilians for aerobatics. The Pilatus started life as the PC-3? 5? and was piston powered. Then it was upgraded with a turbine & called the PC-6 (P&W PT6 I believe, which all of these planes are using!). Then the PC-7 came along... Same basic airframe with some various upgrades like a glass cockpit. Now you have the PC-21 which is the latest version. Swiss plane, used by the Swiss Airforce. But never really been used as a light support aircraft. As I said earlier, used as a trainer & aerobatics. It's been sold as a light support craft to other countries, but don't know its record... Other than its dependable, reliable, durable, and pretty fast... Goes well over 400mph, even 450 and uses 1/2-1/3 less fuel than a jet. Which might not sound like a lot, but the Pilatus, Tucano & T-6 are only 50-100mph slower than your average jet powered trainer/light attack. The US recently bought the Iraqi Air Force 50 Czech made Aero L-39NGs. Which like the Pilatus has been around since the '60s & '70s as a trainer & turned into a light attack. The L-39NG is "affordable", but you can get about 3-4 of the Tucanos for the cost of 1 subsonic, 500mph L-39NG. Back to the original question, aren't both the Tucano & T-6 both licensed from Pilatus? They all look identical! Beech & Embraer may have made some mods that improved the aircraft... But I'm pretty sure they're both licensed from the Swiss. Embraer it seems made it in to a much better platform? Unless it was just price, lots of sales & it's actually been used as a light attacker while the AT-6 & Pilatus PC-12 & now 21 were ALWAYS trainers until recently?

There is no piece of equipment that can defeat an insurrection. An insurrection can only be defeated when the insurgents are offered a better way of life. Having said that, a country is entitled to defend itself against terrorism. These Super Tucanos look very capable of degrading the terrorists' way of life. Their payload is considerable, the planes are easy to fly, they are durable and easy to maintain, they are very economical in fuel usage compared to a jet, the turbine of a turboprop is much less susceptible to damage, the guidance technology can be as sophisticated as you want. The planes are well armored to protect the pilots and the turbine. Thanks to their slow speed capability, they can "loiter" in the air to assist ground forces far longer than a jet and they can land on very short, rough runways. They have had many years of combat experience in South America and are now in use on Afghanistan. Brazil used the P51, and the A-29 already proved to be the best turbo propelled airplane on the world. Its cheap, carry many options of payloads, can be for 4 hours supporting ground troops before having to refuel and is capable of cheap surveillance. Things like the A-10 warthog could never be. Yeah, a-10 is faster, but for ground troops support, there is nothing like the A-29

The Super Tucano is phenomenal at doing what it was built for. Chasing narcos is one thing, but sending these against Russia or China is suicide. IMHO the A-10 is a professional military world class air to ground attack platform, the best, bar none. Those on a budget can go get some Super Tucanos.

I think that both the A-10, ad the A-29 both have combat roles in CAS. The A-10 being heavier and faster is an excellent platform for taking on the task of neutralizing armor, heavy artillery, etc.,while the A-29 offers an excellent choice for dealing with unsupported troops on the ground, at lower costs and more strategic placing of support aircraft. Reserving the A-10 for heavier duty missions, allows ground crew more time for mission ready maintenance until these already strained aircraft are up to date, maintenance-wise.

It is funny to see a big wig aircraft builder crying in a video, asking why his airplane didn't win the competition against a Brazilian Aircraft. But we are willing to answer your issue. The A-29 Super Tucano have better avionics, better controls and any pilot who fly the plane fall in love at the first maneuver. It's a genius project, built by hardworking people. That's the secret.

I did not understand who needs these ancient planes? Why did they hang the weapon? Any machine gun will shoot them down, not to mention special anti-aircraft weapons. Flying target. Funny. It's easier to use shock drones.

Super tucanos are designed for ground attack or support at low costs! But you should not understimate them on any situation! It has modern missiles and weapons, anti-missiles system like flares, modern radar, ejection seats, encrypted communication radio and electronic war capabilities! It is definitely not a dog fighter but I believe it can bit you very hard if you act like an idiot in a confront situation, and the worst part is that everyone will laugh about you being hit by a ww2 looking aircraft.

And in the end, it was all for nothing. The Super Tucano won, but the program was cancelled. The aircraft were handed over to Afghanistan, and whatever hasn't been destroyed is now in the hands of the Taliban or the Uzbeks.

No his biggest issue is that he can't stand that the new kid on the block SNC (American Imigrant female owned mind you) had kicked their tail with ease. And SNC employees thousands of Americans because I'm one of them. The normal usual military contracting companies have been stealing from the tax payer for decades. SNC values their contracts, customers and employees; Amazing place to work! So all of this being said what is he really whining about?

They should have gone with the US company. The only thing they messed up was calling it "AT-6". "T-6" and "Texan" has been synonymous with "trainer" for almost 80 years. When people see "AT-6" they think that it isn't an attack aircraft. If they would have called it "A-11", I'd bet they'd be filling orders already. The AT-6 has lower power loading (better acceleration, and climb), longer duration (range), higher speed, has better weapon system compatibility, is capable of firing laser guided rockets, accommodates 95% of pilots' physiques, etc. The Super Tucano bid was over 40% ($125 million-plus) more expensive than the AT-6 bid. The ST has more than 100,000 hours logged, the T-6 has more than 1,500,000 hours logged. Let's also not forget a contributing factor to the North American P-51's success - the North American T-6. The planes had the same manufacturer, and had nearly identical cockpits. The pilots trained in one, and got into the other, and the same goes for maintenance. Sure they had different performance, and different engines. So also do the T-6II and the AT-6. Another thing, the T-6 is actually a Pilatus PC-9. The PC-9 has been in production since 1984. Hawker (Beechcraft) beat Embraer back in 1991 for the trainer contract, with the T-6II, Embraer entered the Tucano. Embraer redesigned the Tucano into the Super Tucano for this light attack role. Beech redesigned the T-6II into the AT-6. So BOTH are derived from trainers. As for you folks saying that the ST looks like a beefy P-51, you're looking at the AT-6 in formation with the P-51 @1:17, not the ST. The AT-6 has a nearly identical-looking tail to the P-51, and nearly identical-looking landing gear and doors @3:27. The Super Tucano looks like, well, a Toucan. Now, the Air Tractor 802U, that was a stretch. I should get back to work now.

Dream on! The T-6 is a trainer aircraft, while the Super Tucano has actual combat experience and has wiped out major rebel groups in Colombia! Hours logged? Doesn't mean anything. The AT-6 is UNPROVEN as a combat aircraft. And your Toucan joke is almost ridiculous. And the Super Tucano has better weapon capability and is the better aircraft. Get your facts checked please.

Giancarlo Carini All you asshats wanna hang everything on the AT-6 not being "combat proven". Well the Boeing B-17 was simply the Boeing 247 airliner that was adapted to haul bombs. The P-51 had never seen combat before its first day of combat. "The Super Tucano has actual combat experience" wiping out "major rebel groups in Colombia!", _really?_ How big is the FARC's air force? Huh? How extensive is their radar and early warning network? If I walk outside and slaughter a bunch of defenseless animals, does that make me a "combat proven warrior"? Get real.

+8literbeater FARC's Airforce is about as big as Taliban's and Al Qaeda's . The whole point of those planes in Afghanistan is to act in COIN missions and air suport in combats against Taliban and other groups that are very similar to FARC, in terms of resources and guerrilla tatics. They are not expected to have dogfights against organized Air Forces.

The PilatusPC9M/T6 is a much finer aircraft than the Tucano .. The RAF are struggling with their Tucano's due to extremely poor build quality and no doubt there is regret on their part for choosing it over the PC9M

RAF uses the Short Tucano, a license built British variation of the Emb 312, not a version of the much superior Super-Tucano (Emb 314). The difference is huge, so whatever problem RAF is having with the Short Tucano should not be automatically assumed to exist with the Super Tucano.
