From explaining why he left his favorite football club for good to sharing the worst moment of his entire career, Malcolm Blight has some incredible stories to spill about his chaotic life in football. These are must-hear classics, so let’s dive right in!
Malcolm Jack Blight AM was born on February 16, 1950. HE grew up near Alberton Oval and was a big Port Adelaide fan, with his favorite player being forward Rex Johns. But when the new local team, Woodville, joined the SANFL in 1964, Blight ended up in their recruiting zone and made his debut for the Woodpeckers in 1969.
But he really broke out in 1972, scoring 45 goals mainly as a ruck-rover. That year, he won Woodville's best and fairest award and the SANFL's top individual honor, the Magarey Medal, catching the eye of the VFL.
North Melbourne Football Club recruited Blight, and although he was hesitant at first, he went on to play 178 games for the club from 1974 to 1982. He was part of the Kangaroos' premiership teams in 1975 and 1977 and won both the Brownlow Medal and the Syd Barker Medal in 1978 for being the best and fairest player in the VFL and for North Melbourne. By this time, everyone knew he was destined for greatness and greatness alone!
Throughout the 1970s, he was one of the most fantastic players in the VFL.
