Today, we welcomed B.Sc. Nursing 4th semester students from Lucknow Metro Institute of Nursing and Paramedics for their first day of observational clinical posting at Aastha Centre. The session, led by Dr. Abhishek Shukla, introduced them to the complex topic of acidosis-a condition where the pH of blood drops below the normal range of 7.35 to 7.45.
Students were not only given a theoretical understanding of acidosis but also had the opportunity to observe a real case of metabolic acidosis, where a patient's blood pH had dangerously decreased to 6.92. Dr. Abhishek explained the two main types of acidosis: metabolic and respiratory. He highlighted how metabolic acidosis results from an excess of acid in the body due to factors like kidney failure or diabetic ketoacidosis, while respiratory acidosis is caused by impaired lung function, leading to an excess of carbon dioxide.
The students also learned about the critical treatments involved, such as administering inotropic support or other medications to stabilize the patient. They were informed about the serious complications that can arise from acidosis, including bradycardia (heart rate dropping below 60) and tachycardia (heart rate rising above 100), both of which can have severe consequences if not managed promptly.
This hands-on experience was invaluable for the students, providing them with a deeper understanding of acidosis and the importance of timely and accurate medical intervention in critical care settings.
